The question now being asked — are the Yankees a better team WITHOUT all the guys on the injured list?!
- Better defensively with Gio Urshela at 3rd base vs Miguel Andujar, and better at 2nd base with DJ LeMahieu there vs Gleyber Torres (who has shifted to shortstop with Didi Gregorius out). LeMahieu is a multi-time gold glover at 2nd.
- And then offensively — the Yankees have deployed machine-gun offense and small ball, vs bazooka offense, with lots of homers and lots of strikeouts that typified the Yankee lineup when Giancarlo Stanton was in the middle of it.
When the big guys get back someone is going to have to sit, and it will be hard to sit DJ LeMahieu, Gio Urshela, and Clint Frazier.
Bazookas Represented
Well one bazooka is back (Gary Sanchez), and one never left but is now HOT (Luke Voit).
Voit batted 3rd and went 3 for 4 with 1 walk, 2 RBI, 2 runs scored, and raised his average to .283. He is now 2nd in the American League in RBI’s with 25.
Gary Sanchez hit a BOMB for the second day in a row; this one to the BACK of the left field bleachers. As John Sterling exclaimed on the radio, “He hit it to the end of the left field bleachers!!!! OH WOW!!”

Machine Gun Offense
The Yankee Machine-Gun offense used Giant starter Dereck Rodriguez as target practice, scoring 2 in 1st, 2 in the 2nd (Voit singled in 2), and 2 in the 3rd (Gleyber 2-run homer) to take a 6-0 lead. They scored 2 more on reliever Nick Vincent in the 6th (Gary Sanchez’s bomb) to take an easy 8-0 lead.

Overall, Thairo Estrada got 2 hits; Gleyber Torres hit a homer and went 2 for 4 with a walk, 2 runs, 2 RBI’s. Gio Urshela went 2-2 to raise his average to .351 ! Cameron Maybin got a hit and an RBI; even Tyler Wade got a hit (and 2 RBI’s). Mike Tauchman got a hit and scored a run; the only Yankee regular who didn’t get a hit was Brett Gardner.
German a Panzer Tank
Meanwhile Domingo German was going thru the Giants offense like Panzer tank ripping thru the Ardenes. In the 6th however, German tired — and his fastball started to tail. Aaron Boone left him in to get the final out of the inning, which had Yankee twitter aflitter. But it was because German was due up in the top of the 7th (National league baseball) — he was pinch hit for — by J.A. Happ yesterday’s Yankee starter! Happ grounded out. The Yankee bench at that point had only Austin Romine.
In any case it was a ballgame again at 8-4.
Jonathan Holder came in and pitched an easy 7th, striking out 2. Tommy Kahnle pitched an easy 8th, striking out 2. The Yankees unloaded for 3 more runs in the 9th to put the game away.
Joe Harvey pitched the 9th with the 11-4 lead and allowed a homerun to Kevin Pillar but then got in groove and got out of the inning. Ballgame.
