No Offense Taken — April 30, 2019: Arizona 3 Yankees 1

This game got you really wishing for the injured guys — with Zack Greinke on the mound and pitching well, the Yanks could have used DJ LeMahieu, Clint Frazier, Aaron Judge, Miguel Andujar, Giancarlo Stanton, Didi Gregorius, and/or Aaron Hicks. Troy Tulowitzki even. Stripped down to a bare fundamental lineup of Luke Voit, Gary Sanchez, Gleyber Torres, and prey for rain — the Yanks lost 3-1 as Greinke pitched into the 8th allowing only the 1 run. He is now 5-1 on the year.

CC Strikes Out His 3,000th

On the other hill — and the Yankee highlight of the night — was CC Sabathia going after his 3000th strikeout, which he got to end the 2nd, amidst a mostly Yankee audience cheering him on in Arizona. CC’s family were all there and they came down — his wife and young daughters and son — to hug him after the inning as there was a 5 minute break in the action. Sabathia pitched well — allowing 2 runs — and lasted into the 6th.

But that 2nd run — in the bottom of the 4th after the Yanks had tied it in the top of the 4th — gave Arizona a 2-1 lead and ended up being decisive as Greinke retired the Yanks in order in the 5th, 6th, and 7th.

Holder Held Them But Britton Gave them Insurance

Jonathan Holder came in and held them — 1.2 innings shutout ball — he’s been pitching well last few times out. It was 2-1 Arizona when Zack Britton came in and allowed an insurance run in the 8th to give Arizona a 3-1 lead. Ballgame.

CC got the loss and is now 1-1 on the year.
