Yanks Walk Back Win — May 23, 2019: NY 6 Baltimore 5

Aaron Hicks walked with the bases loaded in the top of the 9th to put the Yankees back on top for the 6-5 win on a Thursday afternoon in Baltimore — the Yankees sweeping the 4-game series to go 12-2 vs Baltimore so far this year. The Yankee rally for the winning run came with 2 outs and nobody on in the 9th:

  • This year’s Yankee killer Gleyber Torres got the afternoon off, but pinch hit and walked to start the rally.
  • Other Yankee killer Gary Sanchez, who also got the afternoon off — pinch hit and singled.
  • DJ LeMahieu walked, and then the walk to Hicks to score Torres with the go-ahead and eventual winning run.

Zack Britton pitched the 9th for the save.

Hicks = Hero

Aaron Hicks, who was Saturday’s goat and Sunday’s hero — is getting in a groove hitting wise after the return from injury and is looking like the 2nd best Centerfielder in the American League again. As Katie Sharp pointed out, it was Hicks’ 8th bases loaded walk since 2017, the most of any player in MLB over the last 3 seasons.

Ballpen Failed Tanaka

Renato Nunez had hit a 3-run homer off Tommy Kahnle to tie the game 5-5 in the 8th, after Jonathan Holder couldn’t hold them. Masahiro Tanaka pitched 6 strong innings but was cheated of a win.

Yanks Knocked Out Bundy in 6th

Dylan Bundy, who most always gives the Yankees trouble, pitched shutout ball thru the first 4 innings, but Clint Frazier hit a homer in the 5th, and the Yankees knocked Bundy out in the 6th — a walk to DJ LeMahieu, a double to deep left by Luke Voit, a walk to Kendrys Morales to load the bases, and a Gio Urshela single for 2 runs and a 3-1 Yankee lead.

Small Ball in the 7th; Voit HR in the 8th

The Yankees upped their lead to 4-1 with small ball in the 7th — Thairo Estrada walked, stole 2nd, and scored on a single by Austin Romine.

A Luke Voit homer in the 8th gave the Yankees an insurance run at 5-1. A lead the ballpen could not hold.

Other Yanks

Brett Gardner went 1-4 to raise his average to .227.
