Domingo German regained his mojo for 3 shutout innings to start this one, and when his inside breaking ball got golfed for a homerun by centerfielder Tyler Naquin to tie the game 2-2 in the 5th, it still seemed that he’d had a good, “quality” start. He struck out Francisco Lindor to end the 5th.
But a hopeful start turned into another disappointing start when German allowed a leadoff single to Oscar Mercado in the 6th and then another homer ball — this one by Carlos Santana deep into the right centerfield seats — to put the Indians ahead for good, 4-2.
Paul O’Neill said his breaking ball was “flattening out” in the later innings. German attributed the bombs to mistakes that he can “definitely fix” and it is “minor things that he needs to adjust to help him get back to where he was before”. He said they’ve been working on “keeping (his) command going” longer in the game.

German got the next three outs (strikeout, ground out, pop out) so he finished strong. But 6 innings 4 runs meant another loss; he is now 9-2 on the year and Yankee Twitter is accusing him of being a “4 inning pitcher”. David Hale pitched the last 2 innings for the Yanks.
Plesac Beats Yanks
Zach Plesac pitched 7 strong innings to gain the win. Clint Frazier doubled in a run in the 2nd, and Aaron Hicks hit a homer in the 3rd to give the Yanks their 2-0 lead but Plesac got tougher. Yes Zach is related to Dan Plesac — his uncle.

Didi Back — Battle of Shortstops
This was Didi Gregorius‘s first game of the season, and he banged out 2 hits — one an infield variety that he beat out.
Legit the first pitch Didi even SAW in the Majors this year…can't say he wasn't ever batting 1.000! #YANKSonYES live stream: https://t.co/MGyACerIW4 pic.twitter.com/MTv3S2uhYR

On the other side of the fence, Lindor made a spectacular play in the 5th to rob his old friend Gio Urshela of a single up the middle — and then playfully ragged on Gio from the dugout.

That was all there was to say about this game. Yanks got only 6 hits; Frazier and Didi collecting 2 each. Luke Voit, DJ LeMahieu, Brett Gardner, and Kendrys Morales went hitless (although Morales walked once).
Still in First
With the loss the Yanks are still in 1st place but their lead is whittled down to 0.5 games over Tampa; 6.5 over Boston. (Tampa beat Boston this evening).
