German Scintillating Again — May 5, 2019: NY 4 Minnesota 1

Boring win? No such thing! Not when Domingo German is on the mound — just watching him pitch! His ball moving! Strikeouts; easy groundouts. When is Domingo German going to start being the talk of baseball? He is now 6-1 2.35, and tied Tyler Glasnow (6-0 1.47) for the MLB lead in wins.

Last year, German was often terrific for 3 or 4 innings, but would lose it in the 4th or 5th. Killed by walks and the long ball. This year — he is scintillating thru 6, pitching into the 7th. His starts are getting longer and longer.

The Yankees made the right choice when they didn’t lay down $ to go get Dallas Keuchel when Luis Severino went down with shoulder soreness in Spring training. They saw what German was doing, and they placed their bet on him. That conversation is now renewed with James Paxton going to the injured list; will the Yanks spend $ to get another starter?

Another Rainy Day in NYC

This game was played in the rain, rain, rain — a delayed start to 4pm due to the forecast, and it rained throughout. The Yanks got 2 runs off old friend Michael Pineda in the 3rd when the Twins’ shortstop Jorge Polanco tried to play a ball up the middle by DJ LeMahieu with bases loaded 2 out, and instead of flipping to 2nd base for a force which he ‘might’ have had, threw to 1st and threw it away, allowing 2 runs (Brett Gardner and Gleyber Torres) to score.

In the 4th, Mike Tauchman, whom Yankee twitter was crapping on all day — saying he was the one who was going to be sent down next as the injured return — hit a 2-run line drive shot to right for a homerun, making it 4-1 Yanks.

Some Minor Late Inning Agita

German left with 2 on and 2 out in the 7th; the tieing run at the plate. Tommy Kahnle went to 3 balls on the next batter but then came back to strike him out. Big out.

In the 8th Adam Ottavino got 2 outs but had 2 runners on when Aaron Boone went for Aroldis Chapman — and he went to 3 balls on the batter before getting him out. Big out as the tieing run was at the plate.

And then the rain continued so much that Gary Sanchez slipped at home plate allowing a runner to advance and got a passed ball for it. Then in the 8th, Minnesota relief pitcher Fernando Romero thew a wild pitch because he slipped on the mound. The umps called a halt to the action and with rain forecast into the 2am hour, the game was called after 90 minutes wait.

Ballgame.

Other Yankee Offense

Gary Sanchez, Miguel Andujar (DH), Gio Urshela (3B) also got hits in addition to Tauchman, LeMahieu, and Torres. The Yanks also got 6 walks (3 off Pineda) — Cameron Maybin, Sanchez, Gardner, Torres, Urshela, and Tauchman.
