The Yankee offense immediately got to work on KC starter Heath Fillmyer — as Aaron Judge hit an opposite field homerun in the 1st inning, Clint Frazier hit an opposite field homerun in the 2nd inning, and in the 3rd, Gleyber Torres hit what appeared to be a 3-run homer, but on review it was called fan interference and a fly out.
You make the call – home run or out?

That controversy seemed like it would be the big news of the day — but the Yankees quickly got spite — Mike Tauchman hit a 3-run homer in the 4th; the next batter DJ LeMahieu hit a homer and the Yanks were up 6-0.

Masahiro Tanaka meanwhile was CRUISING. All was good in Yankee Land until the 6th — when Judge singled but immediately twinged at the plate — pulling his oblique muscle in his ribs. Eric Hubbs wondered if the injury happened earlier — even before or during the homerun:
You can actually see Judge grimace as he rounded second on his home run trot. Wonder if he hurt it on that swing and tried to play through it? pic.twitter.com/4xdFAN9ton

The air went out of Yankee twitter. People were predicting 4 to 6 weeks on the DL. The ENTIRE YANKEE TEAM that was to start the season is essentially injured (except Gleyber Torres):
The Yanks continued on — winning 9-2; Tanaka went 7 innings, allowing only 1 run — a 6th inning homer to 2nd baseman Whit Merrifield. And Jonathan Holder pitched 2 shutout innings of relief.
Everybody in the Yankee lineup got a hit except Mike Ford. Clint Frazier went 3 for 5; Gio Urshela went 3 for 4; Austin Romine got 2 hits. A great day was had all around.
Except for Aaron Judge.
