Paul Goldschmidt hit 2 solo HR’s, and Jasson Dominguez aka The Martian hit a 2-run ROCKET to de-orbit Tarik Skubal and give the Yanks a 4-2 win over the Tigers in Detroit on a Wednesday night.
That was just about all the offense the Yankees got — just 6 hits overall and 4 against Skubal — and all they needed against the current 2-time defending Cy Young Award winner who was on his game throwing filth.
On the hill for NY was Ryan Weathers, who manager Aaron Boone calls “Stormy” — and he was not as crisp but rope-a-doped through — throwing 6 solid innings allowing 2 runs (1 unearned) on 6 hits and striking out 6.
The Yankee bullpen of Camilo Doval, Fernando Cruz, and David Bednar took it from there — Cruz throwing NASTY splitters to strike out the last man of the 7th, and 3 straight in the 8th after allowing a leadoff single. Bednar got his 2nd non-agita save in 2 nights, although he did allow a baserunner with 2 outs in the 9th before ending it.
“This was just a really good win for us against a dominant pitcher who I thought was on top of his game,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards. “We made a few big swings stand up, caught the ball well enough, and the bullpen did a great job behind Stormy who gave us 6 strong.”
NY takes 2 of 3 in the series, and improves to 48-31, remaining 3 games ahead of Tampa in the AL East. Detroit falls to 34-46.
1. Goldy HR’s Put Yanks Up 1-0 and 2-1
Tarik Skubal — the 29-year-old, 6’3 lefty who won the last 2 AL Cy Young Awards, was making his 3rd start since undergoing minimally invasive left elbow surgery on May 6th to remove a loose body (“floaters”) from his elbow. The procedure, which has been called the “NanoScope” or “Skubal Scope”, was less invasive than traditional arthroscopic surgery, using a small camera and needle-sized device to precisely remove a lima-bean-sized bone chip without damaging surrounding tissue.
When Skubal went out he was 3-2 2.70, and had allowed 3 runs in each of the 2 starts before this one after coming back — moving his record to 3-3 3.02.
Skubal faced Paul Goldschmidt to lead off the game — and Goldy worked a 3-1 count before blasting a 372-foot HR to left off a 95-MPH fastball for a 1-0 Yankee lead.

Paul Goldschmidt has had great success against Skubal, including 2 prior HR’s against him. His next time up came in the 3rd, when he smoked an 80-MPH curveball 427 feet to left center for a 2-1 Yankee lead.

Goldschmidt struck out against Skubal in his 3rd at bat in the 5th, but now has a .538 lifetime batting avg against him, with 4 HR’s and 5 RBI’s in 13 at bats.
2. Weathers Stormy But Good — Martian Error Allows 2-2 Tie
Weathers was stormy.
“They had some hard contact against him,” said manager Boone afterwards. “They had good at bats against him. But he kept making pitches. The couple of times he lost the zone a little bit, he reeled it right back in and was able to limit them from building a big inning against him. Overall I thought he threw the ball well; 6 strong.”
He pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 1st, but allowed a 1-out double to 1st baseman Spencer Torkelson in the 2nd, then a walk, and a 2-out RBI single to shortstop Zach McKinstry for a 1-1 tie.
Given a 2-1 lead by Goldschmidt, he pitched a shutout 3rd — but allowed a leadoff single to Torkelson in the 4th, followed by a 1-out single to 2nd baseman Hao-Yu Lee — booted by Jasson Dominguez in right that allowed Lee to go to 3rd, where he scored on a sac fly by centerfielder Ben Malgeri.

3. Schuemann Defense in Center Sparkles in 5th
But the Yankee outfield defense helped Weathers in the 5th. After a leadoff double by 3rd baseman (and leadoff batter) Kevin McGonigle, Weathers fielded a comebacker and threw McGonigle out at 3rd as a fielder’s choice.
Max Schuemann then made a tremendous diving catch in left center for the 2nd out.

4. The Martian Hits a ROCKET in 6th for 4-2 Yankee Lead
Skubel struck out the first 2 batters of the 6th in a 2-2 game. But Ben Rice singled, which brought up Jasson Dominguez — who had struck out his first 2 times against Skubel, then made the error in right that caused a run.
After falling behind 0-2 — The Martian worked a 9-pitch at bat before hitting a ROCKET off an 86-MPH changeup for a 2-run HR and 4-2 Yankee lead.

“Look at JD’s at bats tonite — he got Dominated the first 2, and even 2 strikes into the next at bat,” said Boone. “And he just keeps on kind of competing, and as that at bat unfolded, you saw him get on time a little bit, you saw him spoil a couple of pitches, you saw him take a couple of really good pitches, and then it looks like he got the hanging changeup and didn’t miss it.”
5. Tiger Pen Keeps Yanks in Check
Skubel left after 6 innings, and the Tiger pen of 6’6 righty Jacob Wageuspack and 6’3 lefty Enmanuel De Jesus combined to pitch a shutout 7th, 8th, and 9th.
6. Doval Good; Cruz NASTY Splitters
The Yankee pen did likewise — Camilo Doval walked the leadoff batter of the 7th, but got 2 outs and yielded to Fernando Cruz, who struck out Kerry Carpenter swinging at his NASTY 78-MPH splitter.
Cruz allowed a single to leadoff the 8th — then struck out 3 in a row, all swinging at NASTY splitters to end the inning.
8. Bednar Another Non-Agita Save
David Bednar came in for the 9th, and for the 2nd game in a row provided a non-agita save — getting strikeout, ground out, single (to McGonigle) and fly out for the old ballgame.
