Willson Contreras ripped a Shot down 3rd that went under Amed Rosario‘s glove with 1 out and 2 runners on in the 5th inning — opening up a 4-run inning that turned a 2-0 Yankee lead into a 4-2 deficit, as the Red Sox beat the Yanks 6-3 on a Thursday night at Fenway.
The play ruined another strong start by Cam Schlittler, who had a shutout going with 9 K’s. The next batter Jarren Duren hit a sac fly that would have been the 3rd out — instead it tied the score 2-2, and then Caleb Durbin hit a 2-run HR to give the BoSox the 4-2 lead.
NY pulled within 4-3 with a run in the 8th — but Yerry de los Santos came in to pitch the 8th, and made an error that led to 2 more unearned runs for the final straws.
“His stuff was good; what did he end up with — 9 strikeouts?” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards. “Let’s the ball fall — gets Durbin to pop up (in the 2nd inning), that’s kind of in no-man’s land — that’s a play that he has to go attack; then they were just able to get a big hit — Durbin got one in the air there. Overall he threw the ball well; we just didn’t play well enough in and around him.”
“Rosie’s capable of making all those plays,” added Boone on Rosario’s error. “He didn’t make a play tonite on a ball that was — in all fairness — absolutely lathered.”
NY drops to 48-32, and are 2 games ahead of Tampa, in 1st in the AL East. Boston improves to 33-46, 14.5 back.
1. The Martian RBI Single Puts NY Ahead Early
The Red Sox started Connelly Early, their 24-year-old, 6’3 lefty sophomore who came in with a 6-5 3.64 record — and the Yanks got to him early.
Paul Goldschmidt — who hits lefties better than anyone — led off the game with a double to center. A batter later, Amed Rosario singled to left moving Goldschmidt to 3rd, and Jasson Dominguez singled him home for a 1-0 Yankee lead.

2. Caballero HR Makes It 2-0 NY
After that Early settled down — working around 2 baserunners in the 2nd, and pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the 3rd.
And Early got the first 2 batters of the 4th when Jose Caballero hit one over The Green Monster for a 2-0 Yankee lead.

3. Schlittler Good — 4 Unearned Runs in 5th
Cam Schlittler meanwhile was blowing thru the Red Sox lineup, en route to 9 K’s. He worked around a walk in the 1st, and a popup between catcher and pitcher that fell for a single in the 2nd (the play Boone referenced).

He then a hit-by-pitch before retiring the side.
Cam then threw a 1-2-3 inning in the 3rd (striking out 2), and pitched around trouble in the 4th: a single and a double that was a pop-up that fell into no-man’s-land in left — striking out 3 to get through the inning.

Up 2-0 in the 5th, Schlittler walked the Masataka Yoshida leading off, and then allowed a single to Ceddanne Rafaela. He struck out Wilyer Abreu for the 1st out, but Willie Contreras hit a shot down 3rd that went under Amed Rosario’s glove for a run. It was ruled an error on Rosario.

Jarren Duran hit a fly to left that would have been the 3rd out but instead was a sac fly to tie the game 2-2.
Caleb Durbin then lifted a fly 344 feet to left and over The Green Monster for a 4-2 Boston lead.
4. Yanks Pull within 4-3 in 8th
Connelly Early pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 5th and 6th, and ended up striking out 9. He won to go 7-5 3.59.
Greg Weissert came in for the 7th, and the Yanks struck quickly against the former Yank. Jazz Chisholm Jr. walked, and with 1 out, Austin Wells singled to right to put runners on 1st and 2nd.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. then stole 3rd on a delayed steal, and Paul Goldschmidt worked a 12-pitch at bat before hitting a grounder to 3rd to score the run and pull the Yanks within 4-3.
5. De Los Santos Error Leads to 2 More Unearned Runs
Paul Blackburn pitched a shutout 6th, and Tim Hill pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 7th for NY.
But Yerry De Los Santos pitched the 8th and allowed a leadoff walk, a single to the next batter, and then dropped a bunt to load the bases with nobody out.

De Los Santos got a pop out for the 1st out, and yielded to Ryan Yarbrough, who hit Eaton with a pitch — forcing a run in for a 5-3 Bosox lead. Ceddanne Rafaela then hit a double-play grounder to shortstop that Anthony Volpe got the 1st out on — touching 2nd base — but his throw to 1st was off line and another run scored to make it 6-3 Boston.
6. Yanks Load Bases on Chapman in 9th But Don’t Score
Former Yank Aroldis Chapman pitched the top of the 9th — and immediately walked Anthony Volpe and allowed a 1-out single to Jose Caballero — bringing the tying run to the plate.
Max Schuemann flied out, but Paul Goldschmidt reached on an infield single to load the bases, bringing up Ben Rice.
But Rice grounded out back to the pitcher’s mound for the old ballgame.
