Yanks Knock A’s Out with 13-Run 3rd Inning. NY 13 A’s 8

Ben Rice hits a 2-run triple in the 3rd inning to make it a 12-3 game. Earlier in the inning he hit a 2-run double.

The Yanks were down 3-0 entering the 3rd inning when they scored 13 runs — all of the runs they would score in the game — to pummel the A’s 13-8 a Sunday afternoon in Sacramento.

The Yanks sent 18 men to the plate in the 3rd — the lineup coming up twice.

Will Warren was the beneficiary — after allowing 3 unearned runs in the bottom of the 1st when Trent Grisham dropped the 3rd out of the inning. Warren pitched brilliantly — 6 strong innings, allowing just the 3 unearned runs to lower his ERA and improve his record to 7-1 3.22.

Tim Hill allowed 4 runs in the 7th on a solo HR to Brent Rooker and a 3-run HR to Jonah Heim to bring the A’s closer, and Fernando Cruz allowed a run in the 8th on a 2-out RBI double by Nick Kurtz but the game was never close after the 3rd.

“It was fun to watch,” said Will Warren afterwards. “I was trying to stay loose the whole time. I’m glad we got after them and woke up there in the 3rd inning. It was fun.”

“I think I could have been crisper,” added Warren about his outing. “I went out there and we had the big lead, and I don’t know if I was exactly myself — I think I could have stepped on their throat when we wanted to. Coming back into the dugout, Booney and I had a talk and I went out there and finished the game strong.”

NY improves to 36-23 and remain 1.5 behind Tampa which also won. The A’s fall to 28-31.

1. Grisham Drops 3rd Out — A’s Get 3 Unearned Runs in 1st

Will Warren ended up pitching a brilliant game — but it didn’t look good early, as he allowed a leadoff double to Carlos Cortes in the bottom of the 1st, then got 2 outs sandwiching a walk to Nick Kurtz — then got what appeared to be the final out — a popup behind 2nd by Jonah Heim.

Trent Grisham came running in from center to make the catch — but dropped it in the blazing sun — and 2 runs scored, Heim going to 2nd.

Next batter Butler singled in Heim and it was 3-0 A’s just like that.

2. Yanks Score 13 Runs in 3rd Inning

The A’s started 6’4 lefty Jacob Lopez, who came in with a 4-2 5.73 record. He retired the first 6 Yankees of the game — pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the 1st and 2nd, before things went awry in a big way in the 3rd.

  • Anthony Volpe led off with a single to center, and stole 2nd base.
  • Max Schuemann walked.
  • Austin Wells walked to load the bases.
  • Paul Goldschmidt reached on an infield single, scoring a run to make it 3-1 A’s.
  • Ben Rice ripped a double to right, scoring 2 runs to tie the game 3-3.

  • Aaron Judge hit a popup into the sun in center, and it dropped for a single, scoring a run to make it 4-3 Yanks.

  • Cody Bellinger singled to right to load the bases again.

And that was it for Lopez — the A’s brought in 6’4 righty Michael Kelly. But the Yanks were just starting.

  • Jose Caballero worked a walk to score a run and put NY up 5-3.
  • Trent Grisham singled to center to score 2 runs and put the Yanks up 7-3. Grisham stole 2nd base.

  • Anthony Volpe singled to center, scoring a run and sending Grisham to 3rd. Volpe promptly stole 2nd base for the 2nd time in the inning.

  • Max Schuemann doubled in 2 runs and it was 10-3 Yanks.

  • Austin Wells walked for the 2nd time in the inning.
  • Paul Goldschmidt struck out for the 1st out!
  • Ben Rice tripled to right for 2 more runs and a 12-3 Yankee lead.

  • Aaron Judge struck out for the 2nd out.
  • Cody Bellinger singled to right for a 13-3 Yankee lead.

  • Jose Caballero singled to right, sending Bellinger to 3rd.

The A’s changed pitchers again, bringing in 6’1 righty Jack Perkins.

  • Finally, Trent Grisham flied out for the final out. Volpe was in the on-deck circle for his 3rd at bat of the inning.

3. Warren Good — 6 IP, 0 Earned Runs

After the 3 runs in the 1st, Warren allowed a 1-out walk in the 2nd but got a double play to end the inning, trailing 3-0.

Staked to the 13-3 lead, Warren worked around 2 singles in the bottom of the 3rd — getting a line out and ground out to end the inning.

After a conversation with Boone in the dugout, Warren pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 4th, worked around a 1-out double and 2-out walk in the 5th, and a 2-out single in the 6th to finish with 6 innings, allowing 0 earned runs.

4. Hill Coughs Up 4 Runs on 2 HR’s in 7th

Tim Hill came in for the 7th in a 13-3 game and allowed a solo HR to Rooker, then walked Nick Kurtz and hit Bolte with a pitch, and allowed a 3-run HR to Heim and it was 13-7.

But Hill got the final 2 outs of the inning and it was on to the 8th.

5. Cruz Allows Run in 8th to Make It 13-8

Fernando Cruz pitched the 8th, and allowed a leadoff double to Hernaiz and a 2-out RBI double to Nick Kurtz before getting the final out. NY 13 A’s 8. Still a 5-run lead.

6. Former Yank Medina & A’s Pen Shuts Yanks Down

After the 3rd inning, the A’s bullpen shut the Yanks out the rest of the way.

Jack Perkins pitched a shutout 5th and former Yank Mark Leiter Jr. pitched a shutout 6th.

Former Yank Luis Medina looked especially sharp, pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the 7th and 8th, striking out 4 — his fastball hitting 99 MPH.

Jose Suarez pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 9th for the A’s.

7. Bednar Closes

David Bednar came into the 13-8 game for the 9th — and allowed a 1-out walk and single before getting a strikeout and groundout for the old ballgame.
