Cam Schlittler‘s stuff was a tick down and the Guardians got to him — knocking him out in the 5th and taking a 5-4 lead — en route to a 9-4 win on a beautiful, 75-degree Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium.
The game remained close — Cleveland up 6-4 — until the top of the 8th inning when Camilo Doval allowed single, infield single, and bunt single to load the bases with nobody out — then struck out 2 batters and went 0-2 on Guardian leadoff batter Travis Bazzana.
But Bazzana ripped an 1-2, 100-MPH sinker for a 3-RBI double to right to make it 9-4 and that was ballgame.
The Yankee runs came on a 2-run HR by Paul Goldschmidt in the 3rd which gave them a 2-1 lead, and a 2-RBI single by Goldschmidt in the 4th that gave them a 4-3 lead — both leads coughed up by Schlittler.
Schlittler, who came into the game leading MLB with a 1.50 ERA, falls to 7-3 1.89.
“Stuff down just a tick,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards about Schlittler. “Which (we’ve seen) maybe last couple of times just a little bit down. They were selling out to some things. I thought they did a good job of getting to some of his fastballs. But just lacked just a little bit of his normal power, and then locating where he wants to. Throwing strikes obviously but getting it to the spots he wants to.”
When asked if he was alarmed at Schlittler being a tick down, Boone said “no.”
NY falls to 36-24, Cleveland improves to 35-27.
1. Goldy 2-RBI HR in 3rd Gives NY 2-1 Lead
The Yanks were down 1-0 in the bottom of the 3rd, when Ben Rice ripped a 1-out single off Joey Cantillo and Paul Goldschmidt hit a 386-ft HR to left for a 2-1 Yankee lead.

2. Goldy 2-RBI Single in 4th Gives NY 4-3 Lead
The Yanks were down 3-2 in the bottom of the 4th when Jazz Chisholm Jr. reached on a 1-out, infield single, Jose Caballero walked and with 2 outs, Ben Rice walked to load the bases.
Paul Goldschmidt then hit a clutch, 2-out, 2-run single to opposite-field right for a 4-3 Yankee lead.

3. Schlittler Coughs Up All Leads
But Cam Schlittler was ‘a tick down’ on his stuff and gave up all leads.
The night started well for Schlittler — he retired the first 7 batters, in pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the 1st and 2nd, and getting the first out of the 3rd.
But with 1 out in the 3rd, catcher Patrick Bailey tripled to center, and shortstop Brayan Rocchio knocked him in with a sac fly for a 1-0 Cleveland lead.
Goldschmidt’s 2-run HR in the bottom of the 3rd gave NY a 2-1 lead, but Schlittler allowed a leadoff double to 3rd baseman Jose Ramirez and 2-run HR to 1st baseman Kyle Manzardo in the top of the 4th for a 3-2 Cleveland lead.
Goldschmidt’s 2-RBI single in the bottom of the 4th gave NY a 3-2 lead, but Schlittler coughed it up again in the top of the 5th — allowing a leadoff single by centerfielder Steven Kwan, getting a groundout, hitting Brayan Rocchio with a pitch, allowing a sac fly to 2nd baseman Travis Bazzanao for a 4-4 tie, then allowing an RBI double to Jose Ramirez for a 5-4 Cleveland lead.
4. Headrick Great
Brent Headrick relieved Schlittler with runners on 2nd and 3rd and 1 out in the 5th — and walked the first batter he faced to load the bases, but then struck out Kyle Manzardo and leftfielder Angel Martinez to end the inning.
Headrick then pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 6th. A great outing.
5. Cleveland Pen Shuts Yanks Out
Joey Cantillo left after 4 innings, but the Cleveland bullpen of Colin Holderman, Tim Herrin, Hunter Gaddis, Shawn Armstrong, and Matt Festa each pitched a shutout inning — the Yanks only getting 2 hits the rest of the way.
6. Bazzana Banana Bizarro 3-RBI Double Breaks It Open in 8th
Tim Hill allowed a run on a leadoff single and 1-out RBI double by Jose Ramirez in the 7th to give Cleveland a 6-4 lead.
And then Camilo Doval took the mound in the 8th — and allowed single (by Angel Martinez), infield single (by Daniel Schneemann), and bunt single (by Kwan) to load the bases with nobody out.
Doval — throwing 100-to-102 MPH heat — then struck out Patrick Bailey and Brayan Rocchio, and went 0-2 on Travis Bazzana — before Bazzana lined a bases-clearing double to right for the old ballgame.
