Everything is broken. Even Cam Schlittler the Yankees’ young ace.
The Tigers hit 3 homeruns off Schlittler in the 1st inning for a 4-0 lead, and added another 2-run HR in the 4th to go up 6-1 in route to a 9-3 pummeling of the Yankees on a Tuesday night at the Stadium. It was the 6th straight loss for NY.
Ryan Yarbrough allowed a 3-run HR in the 6th to give Detroit a 9-1 lead, while on the other hill, Tarik Skubal shut down the Yanks sans a solo HR by Ben Rice in the bottom of the 1st and a meaningless run in the 6th to make it 9-2.
Jasson Dominguez drove in a run with a single in the 9th to make it 9-3. The Yanks only got 4 hits in the game — 2 by The Martian, one by Anthony Volpe (after Dominguez in the 9th), and the HR by Rice.
“Just some mistake locations, and some long at bats against him,” said manager Aaron Boone about Schlittler. “I think the stuff was ok. They hit the ball out of the ballpark — they got to him obviously. Just missing location with some things and some long at bats that added up against him. I thought he made some adjustments, using the curve ball more. Confident with Cam he’ll grow from this and this will something that will fuel him and allows him to see where he can make adjustments too going forward.”
NY drops to 48-37, and are now 2.5 behind Tampa, which has won 6 in a row. Detroit improves to 37-49.
1. Schlittler Bombed by 3 HR Balls in 1st
Cam Schlittler got the first 2 batters of the game — one on strikeout — on a Hot Tuesday night in the Bronx — day time temps in low 90’s and the start of a heat wave with temps expected over 100 later in the week.
And maybe the warm weather helped the ball travel because hitter #3 — rightfielder Kerry Carpenter — hit a 96-MPH cutter 410 feet to center that Spencer Jones reached up and caught — for a second — but the ball bounced out of his glove as it hit the wall. Detroit 1 NY 0.

Next batter Riley Greene hit a 97-MPH sinker 424 feet to right for a 2-0 Detroit lead.
Keith singled and Spencer Torkelson worked a 10-pitch at bat — fouling off several 97-MPH four-seam fastballs before clobbering the 10th pitch — a 94-MPH cutter — 405 feet to left for the 3rd HR of the inning and 4-0 Detroit lead.

2. Rice HR Makes It 4-1 in 1st
Ben Rice got one back in the bottom of the 1st with a 395-foot HR to right center off the 6’3 lefty Tarik Skubal for a 4-1 game.

3. Schlittler Knocked Out in 5th
And for a while it looked like it would be a ballgame. Schlittler settled down to pitch a 1-2-3 inning in the 2nd.
But catcher Dillon Dingler singled to lead off the 3rd, and a batter later Riley Greene hit a 96-MPH sinker 404 feet to right center for a HR and 6-1 Detroit lead.
4. Yarbrough Coughs Up 3-Run HR for 9-1 Game
Schlittler pitched a shutout 4th but left after allowing a leadoff single to catcher Dillon Dingler in the 5th.
Ryan Yarbrough came in to retire the rest of the side in the 5th.
But in the 6th, Yarbrough allowed a leadoff single, a baserunner due to an error by Jose Caballero at 2nd, and then a 3-run HR to James Outman for a 9-1 Detroit lead.
5. Skubal Shuts Down NY
After the Rice HR in the 1st, Skubal settled down and started smoking the Yankee lineup — pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th — retiring 13 in a row.

Skubal struck out the last 2 batters of the 3rd, and struck out the side in the 4th — 5 straight strikeouts.

“I thought early on he didn’t look as dominant,” said Boone about Tarik. “First 2 innings he was finding it a little bit, and then he got into a good rhythm and started throwing the ball really well — started racking up strikeouts, mixing his secondary with some good heaters.”
The Yanks finally got a 2nd run off Skubal in the 6th due Max Schuemann getting hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, moving to 3rd on an error by shortstop Zach McKinstry that put 2 on, and a double-play grounder by Paul Goldschmidt that he beat out for an RBI.

6. Yovanny Looks GREAT
Good news for the Yanks — Yovanny Cruz with his 101-MPH fastball, 90-MPH splitter, and 90-MPH slider pitched a shutout, 1-2-3 inning in the 7th and 8th — striking out 3.
Yovanny Cruz was the sharpest arm out of the pen last night at a 146 proPitching+, and the line matched it: two clean innings, zero baserunners, three punchies. JoJo Romero graded right behind at 144 and gave up four hits in two-thirds of an inning. pic.twitter.com/UYeJmdA42F
— Pitch Profiler (@pitchprofiler) July 1, 2026
Cruz is a 26-year-old, 6’0 righthander who looked great in Spring Training and has been pitching at Scranton in AAA with a 3.18 ERA, striking out 30 percent of the batters he has faced.
Jake Bird pitched the 9th — allowing consecutive singles to start the inning — but then getting a pop out and double play.
7. The Martian Singles in Run in 9th
6’6 righty Jacob Waguespack shut the Yankees out in the 7th and 8th.
6’2 lefty Tyler Holton came on for the 9th in the 9-2 game — to that point the Yankees only had 2 hits.
Amed Rosario worked a 1-out walk, and Jasson Dominguez drove him in with a 2-out to right that dropped in to make it 9-3.
