You can’t make it up.
The Yankees can — making up a new way to lose — their 7th loss in a row, which, combined with 7 straight Tampa wins, has turned a 3.5 game 1st place Yankee lead into a 3.5-game deficit in 2nd place.
This time the Yanks trailed 2-0 all afternoon, then magically tied it with 2 runs in the 9th and were ‘this’ close to winning in the bottom of the 10th — getting the inherited runner to 3rd with 1 out. All they needed was for the batter — Oswaldo Cabrera — to hit the ball somewhere. But he struck out.
A final out was made to send the game to the 11th where the Yanks were ‘this’ close to getting out of the inning with no runs — meaning they could win by scoring their inherited runner in the bottom of the inning. But with 2 outs, Camilo Doval went 0-2 on a batter then walked him to load the bases, then walked the next batter on a 3-2 pitch to put Detroit ahead, then allowed a single to put the game away.
On a HOT, sunny Wednesday afternoon at Yankee Stadium — temps in the mid 90’s.
Earlier, Will Warren pitched well — his best start in a while — with 5.2 innings, allowing 2 runs and striking out 7. But he was bettered by Troy Melton, a 25-year-old 6’4 righthander who threw 6.1 innings of 2-hit shutout ball.
Yankee heroics were provided in the 9th by Amed Rosario, who hit a solo HR, and Jazz Chisholm Jr. who reached on an infield single, stole 2nd, stole 3rd, and scored on a wild pitch to tie the game 2-2.
Several players were out for the Yanks with what they said was Food Poisoning, including Spencer Jones. Cases of Explosive Diarrhea have been reported across the US.
“It’s been a terrible week for is,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards. “There’s no way to sugar coat it.”
NY falls to 48-38, 3.5 behind Tampa. Detroit improves to 38-49, sweeping the 3-game series.
1. Warren Pitches Well
Good news — Will Warren looked great again. After several shaky starts, it was the same Will Warren that looked like a top-of-rotation starter for much of this season so far.

He had a shutout going when 3rd baseman Kevin McGonigle clipped him for a solo HR with 1 out in the 3rd, but rebounded by pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the 4th and 5th.
He started to wilt in the HOT 95-degree suffocating Sun in the 6th — allowing leadoff singles to catcher Dillon Dingler and rightfielder Kerry Carpenter, and a sac fly to Riley Greene for a 2-0 game.
He was relieved by Paul Blackburn, who got the last 2 outs of the inning. Warren’s line: 5.2 IP, 5 hits, 2 runs, 7 K’s, 1 walk — he is now 7-3 3.73.
2. Melton Pitches Better
But the 25-year-old, 6’4 righty Troy Melton was better. He pitched a shutout into the 7th inning, allowing only 2 hits, while striking out 7 and walking 1.
The Yankee hits came from Ben Rice leading off the bottom of the 1st for NY, and Jazz Chisholm Jr., who doubled with 2 outs in the 4th. Rice also walked in the 3rd — those were the only 3 baserunners the Yanks had into the 7th.
Melton was throwing a 95-MPH fastball, 90-MPH cutter, 76-MPH curve, and 86-MPH slider. He was strking out guys with the slider. A ‘dirty’ slider ala Ron Guidry.

Melton got the first out of the 7th, and was relieved by 6’3 lefty Drew Sommers who got the final 2 outs.
Melton is in his 2nd season — having gone 3-2 2.76 in 4 starts and 16 MLB games last year.
He doesn’t get a win but his line is now 4-1 2.05 this year.
3. Yank Pen Good
Paul Blackburn was good again — pitching getting the last 2 outs of the 6th and pitching a shutout 7th for 1.2 innings of no-hit, shutout ball.
Brent Headrick pitched a shutout 8th and got the first out of the 9th — 1.1 innings of 0-hit shutout ball.
And Fernando Cruz — after blowing the save Sunday night — was great. He got the final 2 outs of the 9th and then pitched around the inherited runner to throw a shutout 10th — putting NY in a position to win.
4. Rosario & Jazz Tie It in 9th
6’3 righty Drew Anderson pitched the 8th and got into immediate trouble — leadoff singles by Spencer Jones and Jose Caballero.
Oswaldo Cabrera then laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt to put the runners in scoring position at 2nd and 3rd — where a single would tie the game.
But Montero struck out Ben Rice and got Jasson Dominguez to line out to center.
Montero got the first out of the 9th and it did not look good for the Yanks.
But Amed Rosario gave them life with a 361-foot HR to left for a 2-1 game, Detroit leading.

Then Jazz Chisholm Jr. reached on an infield single to 2nd — then stole 2nd and stole 3rd — and scored on a wild pitch! TIE GAME!

Anthony Volpe followed with a single and then attempted to steal 2nd — he was called out and the Yanks lost the appeal. It was razor close — he was safe at first but his body at one point was off the bag with the glove on him barely.
5. Yanks Come ‘This’ Close to Winning in 10th
Fernando Cruz did a great job in the top of the 10th, stranding the inherited runner by getting pop out, strike out, and fly out.
And so it was to the bottom of the 10th with 25-year-old, 6’1 righty Keider Montero on the mound for Detroit and the Yanks with the inherited runner on 2nd.
Jose Caballero began with a perfect sacrifice bunt to set the Yanks up with a runner on 3rd and 1 out.
But Oswaldo Cabrera struck out swinging on a 2-2 pitch.

Ben Rice was intentionally walked, and catcher Ali Sanchez struck out swinging on a 2-2 pitch.
6. Doval Comes ‘This’ Close to Getting Out of 11th
Camilo Doval pitched the 11th — with the inherited runner on 2nd — and got a groundout to start — moving the runner to 3rd, then got a groundout to shortstop — with the runner on 3rd unable to move.
Two outs. Runner on 3rd — the Yanks an out from going into the bottom of the 11th with a 2-2 tie and chance to win.
Doval went 0-2 on Hao-Yu Lee and NY was a strike away. But Doval walked him — a ball, a foul ball, and 3 straight balls.
Then Doval went 3-2 on Spencer Torkelson — before walking him and it was 3-2 Detroit.

And then Doval put the game away by allowing a single to McKinstry — scoring 2 runs. A throwing error by catcher Ali Sanchez allowed another run to come across and it was 6-2 Detroit.

Montero stayed in for the bottom of the 11th — getting fly out, groundout to 3rd, and strikeout for the old ballgame.
