Yanks Can’t Hit and Weathers’ Bad. Detroit 7 NY 3

Amed Rosario 3-run HR makes it 7-3 Detroit in 8th.

Another day, another game where the Yankees got barely any hits and runs. This time Casey Mize 1-hit them into the 8th inning, while NY starter Ryan Weathers had an unusually bad outing  — allowing 7 early runs as the Yanks got ripped by the Tigers 7-3 on a Monday night at Yankee Stadium.

NY finally got runs in the 8th off reliever D Sommers — a walk by Jasson Dominguez, double by Spencer Jones, and HR by Amed Rosario for a 7-3 game.

“Just mistakes in the heart (of the plate),” said manager Aaron Boone about Weathers. “A couple of pitch selection things. And got hurt when he was ahead in the count too. He threw well against them there (last week); they kind of had his number and had a bead on him, and he just missed some locations with different pitches. They pressured him early; we didn’t make a play behind him, and it led to a big inning.”

NY loses its 5th game in a row and drops to 48-36, 2 games back of Tampa. Detroit improves to 36-49.

1. Weathers Bad — NY Down 5-0 by 3rd

It wasn’t a good day for Weathers. He allowed a 1-out double to Dingler and 2-out single to Spencer Torkelson in the 1st and it was 1-0 Detroit just like that.

Weathers allowed a leadoff single to shortstop Zach McKinstry and a 1-out single to leftfielder Ben Malgeri in the 2nd but got Matt Vierling to ground the ball to Jose Caballero at 3rd — unfortunately Cabellero booted the ball for an error and it was 2-0 Detroit.

A sac fly by Dingler made it 3-0 Detroit, and then Weathers lost it — allowing a single to 3rd baseman Kevin McGonigle, a walk to 1st baseman Spencer Torkelson, and a 2-RBI single to 2nd baseman Hao-Yu Lee for a 5-0 Detroit lead.

2. De Los Santos Makes It 7-0 Detroit in 4th

Yerry de Los Santos came in for the 4th — and a single, error by Cody Bellinger in left, and single by McGonigle later and it was 7-0 Detroit.

3. Mize 1-Hits NY for 7 Innings

Casey Mize pitched a Gem. The 29-year-old, 6’3 righty is one of the best Tiger pitchers — having gone 14-6 3.87 last year, and coming in at 2-5 2.95.

Mize used a 95 four-seam fastball, 94-MPH sinker, 83-MPH slurve, and 88-MPH splitter to subdue the Yanks — pitching a 1-hitter through 7 innings.

The only hit he allowed was a leadoff double to Spencer Jones in the 3rd — but then got a strike out and two flyouts to end the inning.

Mize struck out 10 in 7 innings of 1-hit shutout ball. He improves to 3-5 2.63.

4. Yankee Pen Holds Detroit at 7-0

Some good news for the Yanks: Tim Hill (1.1 innings), Jake Bird (1.1 innings), Ryan Yarbrough (.2 inning), Camilo Doval (1 inning), and Brent Headrick (1 inning) combined to pitch shutout ball the rest of the way.

5. Rosario 3-Run HR in 8th Makes It 7-3

Drew Sommers, a 6’3 lefty, came in to pitch the 8th, and walked Jasson Dominguez to lead off the inning, then allowed a 1-out double to Spencer Jones — his 2nd double of the game!

Next batter Amed Rosario smoked one 378 feet to left center for a 7-3 game.

But that was it for NY — 6’3 righty Drew Anderson pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 9th inning for the old ballgame.
