The Red Sox got to Ryan Yarbrough in the 3rd and 4th innings, pounding out 7 runs to take an 8-3 lead. The Yankees clawed back to get within 8-7 in the 8th with a runner on 2nd and 2 outs — but fell a hit short.
Ian Hamilton allowed 2 runs in the 9th and the Yanks went down 10-7 on a nice, clear Saturday night in the Bronx, a days’ worth of light rain and torrential thunderstorms having subsided.
Austin Wells was a bright spot — with a 2-for-4 performance — a 3-run HR and RBI double, as was DJ LeMahieu who went 2-for-3 and has 8 hits in his last 16 at bats (for a .259 average, .338 OBP). Cody Bellinger was 2-for-3 as the Yanks were able to score 5 runs against Boston’s Ace Garrett Crochet, who had filthy stuff and struck out 9.
Aaron Judge went 0-4 striking out 3 times, and Paul Goldschmidt went 0-5 striking out 3 times.
Boone’s Thoughts
“Not as sharp today,” said manager Aaron Boone about Yarbrough. “Not getting it to those real defined spots on the plate with his different pitches. Maybe not his best cutter. In the zone, but not getting to those spots he’s been good at getting to.”
On Crochet and his success against Judge, Boone said “He’s got electric stuff. He was getting some stuff on the edges away. He’s been one of the best pitchers in the sport. It’s elite stuff with some deception with that delivery.”
“You don’t necessarily expect going up against a guy like Crochet that you’re going to throw up the kind of numbers we did,” added Boone. “Just a lot of really good at bats up and down the lineup; competitive at bats to claw us back into the game; big hit by DJ to get it to 1. Just a lot of good things offensively against one of the game’s Aces. A little bit short tonite but I love the compete from our lineup up and down.”
NY falls to 39-24, in 1st in the AL East by 4.5 over Toronto. Boston improves to 31-35.
1. Wells HR Puts Yanks Up 3-1 in 2nd
Garrett Crochet is the 25-year-old, 6’6 lefty whom the Red Sox signed to a 7-year, $24M to $30.6 M a year contract this past winter to be their ace. Crochet had his first big season last year, when he went 6-12 3.58 for the White Sox; that record was good considering the White Sox were 41-121. Crochet struck out 209 in 146 innings with only 123 hits allowed.
Coming into this game he was 6-4 2.35 with a league-leading 110 strikeouts in a league-leading 88 innings.

But lefty swinging Austin Wells got to him with a 343-foot homer to left in the 2nd — a 3-run job after lefty Cody Bellinger had led off the inning with an infield single and DJ LeMahieu had worked a 1-out walk. Yankees 3 Red Sox 1.

2. Roof Caves in on Yarbrough in 3rd & 4th
Ryan Yarbrough didn’t quite have it from the start.
He worked around a 1-out double by Rafael Devers in the 1st, and then allowed a run in the 2nd off a leadoff double by Romy Gonzalez, a 2-out walk to Ceddanne Rafaela, and RBI single by Kristian Campbell. But with Austin Wells giving him a 3-1 lead, all was looking good for NY.
Until the 3rd when the roof caved in.
Yarbrough hit Rafael Devers with a pitch, Rob Refsnyder doubled to left, he got Carlos Narvaez on a groundout — Devers out at home, but 1st baseman Romy Gonzalez reached on an infield single to load the bases.
3rd baseman Abraham Toro then singled to center for a 3-2 game, and Trevor Story followed with a bases-clearing double to left and Boston was up 5-3.

A Kristian Campbell 2-out RBI single made it 6-3 Boston.
Yarbrough finally got out of the inning but in the 4th, he walked Rob Refsnyder with 1 out, and Romy Gonzalez hit a 2-out homer to left for an 8-3 Boston lead.
3. Yanks Come Right Back to Make It 8-5 in 4th
The Yanks came right back against Crochet. Cody Bellinger led off the bottom of the 4th with a double, and after Jasson Dominguez struck out, DJ LeMahieu singled to center, and Austin Wells ripped a double to left center for an 8-4 game.

Boone Sits Red-Hot Jazz — Reyes Drives In Run
Boone took heat from Yankee fans for doing what he constantly does — inexplicably resting a red-hot player — in this case Jazz Chisholm Jr., putting Pablo Reyes in at 3rd.
Boone said afterwards it was a planned off-day for Chisholm, as soon as he came back from the IL.
With 2nd and 3rd and 1 out, Reyes grounded out, scoring a run to make it 8-5.
Oswald Peraza singled to extend the rally — sending Wells to 3rd, but Paul Goldschmidt grounded out to end the inning.
Crochet then settled down — pitching a shutout 5th and 6th.
4. De Los Santos Throws 3 Shutout Innings
Yerry De Los Santos pitched around 2 walks for a shutout 5th, and then threw down a 1-2-3 inning in the 6th. He allowed a 1-out single to Trevor Story in the 7th, but got a double play to end the inning. A nice performance by de Los Santos.
5. Leiter K’s 3 in 8th
Mark Leiter Jr. picked up from de Los Santos to hold the fort in the 8th — striking out the side — Hamilton, Devers, and Abreu — amidst a 1-out single by Duran.
6. LeMahieu Clutch Hit Makes It 8-7 in 8th
With their backs to the wall, down 8-5, the Yanks got to old friend Justin Wilson in the bottom of the 8th.
Ben Rice led off with a walk, Aaron Judge flied out, Rice took 2nd on a passed ball by Narvaez, Cody Bellinger walked and stole 2nd, but Jasson Dominguez struck out.
That brought up DJ LeMahieu with runners on 2nd and 3rd and 2 outs — and he came through with a Clutch, 2-RBI single up the middle. Boston 8 NY 7.

7. Hamilton Coughs Up 2 Runs in 9th
But Ian Hamilton didn’t have it in the 9th — a leadoff walk to Narvaez, a single by Marcelo Mayer, then a single by Toro loaded the bases with nobody out.
Trevor Story lined a single to center scoring 2 runs and it was 10-7 Boston.
Hamilton then got a groundout, and then a double play to end the inning but the damage was done.
8. Old Friend Chapman the Save
Old friend Aaroldis Chapman pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 9th — strikeout of Jazz Chisholm Jr. (who entered the game in the 7th, pinch hitting for Pablo Reyes), groundout of Oswald Peraza, and groundout of Goldschmidt — for the old ballgame.
