Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Anthony Volpe hit HR’s for 5 runs in the 1st, and each drove in a run in the 2nd to launch the Yankees to a 7-0 lead in a 9-6 win over the Red Sox and Walker Buehler at Yankee Stadium on a gorgeous June Friday night.
Will Warren was filthy with a shutout through 4 innings, but yielded a solo HR in the 5th, and walked 3 in the 6th, leaving with bases loaded and an 8-2 lead.
Brent Headrick came in and allowed 2 of those runners to score on a single, then yielded a 2-run HR to Rafael Devers in the 7th to make it a 9-6 game. (Paul Goldschmidt hit an important solo HR in the 6th to make it 9-4 at the time.)
But Fernando Cruz struck out 2 to end the 7th, Jonathan Loaisiga pitched a shutout 8th, and Devin Williams pitched a relatively non-agita, shutout 9th for the victory. Warren got the well-deserved win to go 4-3 5.34.
Aaron Judge and Chisholm both got 3 hits; Judge raising his batting average to .398.
“Every time someone steps in our house we gotta show them why we’re the Yankees and why this is Yankee stadium,” said Jazz Chisholm afterwards.
“He’s a game changer,” said Aaron Judge about Chisholm. “He’ll steal bases, put the ball in play all over the park, guys on base big spot he comes up with a 3-run homer for us; this is why we traded for him — he can change the game with one swing or one play.”
NY improves to 39-23, in 1st in the AL East by 5.5 games over Tampa and Toronto. Boston falls to 30-35.
1. Buehler’s Back Story
Walker Buehler went 1-6 5.38 for the Dodgers last year, but was rejuvenated in the playoffs — throwing 5 innings of shutout ball in game 4 of the World Series against the Yanks to put LA up 3-1 in games, then pitching a shutout 9th for the save in game 5, which eliminated NY. He had pitched 4 shutout innings in a great start against the Mets in the NLCS.
The 30-year-old, 6’2 righty became a free agent in the off season and signed a 2-year deal with Boston, paying $18 Million this year and $25 Million in 2026.
Buehler came into this game with a 4-3 4.44 record — ready to engage in the Red Sox – Yankee rivalry.
2. Chisholm & Volpe Go Back-to-Back in 1st
The Yanks got to Buehler right away. Trent Grisham led off the bottom of the 1st with a walk, and Aaron Judge ripped base hit to center, hustling it into a double on the throw in with an aggressive slide into 2nd.
But the rally stalled as Buehler got Cody Bellinger to line out to short, and struck out Paul Goldschmidt.
The count went 0-2 on Jazz Chisholm Jr. — and it looked like the Yanks would squander the 2nd and 3rd, nobody out opportunity.
But Chisholm ripped a knuckle curve into the night air, 417 feet to center and just over the wall for a 3-run HR.

Jasson Dominguez then singled to right, and Anthony Volpe hit a 94-MPH four-seam fastball 369 feet to opposite field right for a 2-run HR and 5-0 Yankee lead!

3. Chisholm & Volpe Drive Make It 7-0 in 2nd
The Yanks were right back at Buehler in the bottom of the 2nd. Aaron Judge ripped a 1-out single to left. Cody Bellinger struck out as Judge stole 2nd base.
With 2 outs, Paul Goldschmidt hit a grounder to 3rd for the final out, but rookie Marcelo Mayer booted it for an error, and NY had 1st and 3rd, 2 outs.
Jazz Chisholm Jr. then came through again — ripping a high and inside 89-MPH slider with a QUICK swing for an RBI single to right and 6-0 Yankee lead.

Jasson Dominguez was the glue in the middle of the rally again — he walked to load the bases.
Anthony Volpe worked the count to 2-2 before Buehler hit him on the elbow with an 88-MPH changeup — forcing in a run to make it 7-0 NY.
Volpe Leaves Game After Hit-by-Pitch on Elbow
Volpe was in a lot of pain after being hit in the elbow; after a long visit by the trainer, he stayed in the game but was removed after the inning.
X-Rays proved negative, and he’s expected back in a few days.
Buehler got Austin Wells to pop out to end the inning but was removed from the game — getting the rest of the night off.
4. Warren Filthy thru 5
Meanwhile Will Warren was not giving up the lead — in fact he was filthy. Warren had just absorbed his worst outing of the season in an 18-2 shellacking by the Dodgers — but he was back on his game in this start.
He was getting ahead in counts with his 96-MPH four-seam fastball, then using his sweeper and curve to effect.

Warren pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 1st, allowed but a 1-out single in the 2nd, pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 3rd (striking out 2), and allowed but a 2-out single in the 4th.
Warren allowed a leadoff HR to Marcelo Mayer in the 5th for a 7-1 game, but then retired the next 3 batters in a row. It was the top-prospect Mayer’s first HR in the bigs.

5. Judge 3 Hits — Drives in Run in 5th for 8-1 Lead
Austin Wells had 2 hits on the night. One came against Brennan Bernardino with 1 out in the bottom of the 5th, followed by a DJ LeMahieu walk.
Trent Grisham struck out but with 2 outs, Aaron Judge got a clutch single to left — Austin Wells scoring. NY 8 Boston 1.

6. Warren Falters in 6th; Headrick Allows Some Runs
Will Warren faltered in the 6th — allowing a leadoff triple to Jarren Duran then walking Rafael Devers. Wilyer Abreu hit a sac fly to make it an 8-2 game.
Warren then walked Carlos Narvaez and Abraham Toro to load the bases.
6’6 lefty Brent Headrick relieved Warren, and allowed a 2-RBI single to pinch hitter Romy Gonzalez and it was 8-4. Gonzalez snuck into 2nd on the throw in so Boston had 2nd and 3rd with 1 out.
Headrick got tough — striking out Trevor Story and pinch hitter Rob Refsnyder.
7. Goldschmidt Insurance HR
Paul Goldschmit hit a 346-foot homer to right off Cooper Criswell in the bottom of the 6th to get the Yanks back a run and a 9-4 lead.

It proved to be an important insurance run.
8. Devers 2-Run HR off Headrick Makes It 9-6 in 7th
Because Rafael Devers returned the favor and then some with a 419-foot, 2-run HR to right off Headrick in the top of the 7th for a 9-6 game.
9. Cruz, Loaisiga & Devin Close It
Fernando Cruz relieved Headrick after Devers’ HR and struck out Kristian Campbell and Narvaez swinging on his splitter.

Jonathan Loaisiga came in for the 8th — and after allowing a leadoff double to Toro, got groundout, lineout, groundout for a shutout inning.
Devin Williams pitched the 9th — and got a groundout to start the inning. He hit Jarren Duran with a pitch and here we go again.. But Devin got Rafael Devers to fly out to medium left, and struck out Kristian Campbell looking on a 1-2 pitch for the old ballgame.
