Judge’s 2 HR’s Not Enough; Rodon Rocked by HR Ball. Boston 11 NY 7

Aaron Judge bookended the game with a 2-run HR in the 1st inning, and a 2-run HR in the 9th inning — but Carlos Rodon — cruising through 4 innings with a 2-0 lead — was also rocked by HR’s in the 5th and 6th as the Yanks went down 11-7 to the Red Sox on a blustery Sunday night at Yankee Stadium, with temps in the mid 60’s.

The day started out sunny, but got cooler and cloudy with showers and blustery winds in the afternoon into the evening, and that led to a homer-ball night at Yankee Stadium.

DJ LeMahieu was a hero at one point, hitting a HR in the bottom of the 5th to temporarily give the Yanks back the lead at 3-2.

Jonathan Loaisiga gave up 2 HR’s in the 8th to make it 9-5 Boston, and Brent Headrick gave up a HR in the 9th to Rafael Devers to make it 10-5 Boston.

“Little bit of a weird night with the wind,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards. “They did a good job offensively this series, and certainly all night tonite — they put together a lot of really good at bats against some good pitching. They got us tonite.”

The game had some spice to it as well — with Red Sox rookie pitcher Hunter Dobbins insulting the Yankees before the game, and Aaron Judge providing an immediate response. Also, former Yankees Carlos Narvaez, Rob Refsnyder, Greg Weissert, and Aroldis Chapman contributed to the Bosox victory.

NY falls to 39-25 and remain 4.5 in 1st in the AL East over Toronto; Boston improves to 32-35.

1. Judge Starts Game with 2-Run HR Off Dobbins

Rookie pitcher Hunter Dobbins started for Boston — who was quoted before the game saying “If the Yankees were the last team to give me a contract, I’d retire.”

The 25-year-old, 6’2 righthander is the #13 prospect in the Red Sox organization, and came into the game with a 2-1 4.06 record.

And so Ben Rice led off the game with a single, and next batter Aaron Judge parked one to opposite field right for a 2-0 Yankee lead.

“I really didn’t hear about it until Eduardo Pérez told me before the game,” said Judge afterwards about Dobbins’ comments. “I’ve only heard Ken Griffey say that, so I was a little surprised.”

When asked if the comment provided him with incentive, Judge said “Once somebody tells you, yeah.”

2. Rodon Cruises thru 4; Allows 2-Run HR in 5th

Meanwhile Carlos Rodon was cruising — retiring 15 of the first 16 batters he faced in the game.

Dobbins settled down and it was a bit of a pitchers’ duel.

Short 4th Inning for Yanks Sends Rodon Right Back Out

The one batter Rodon didn’t retire was former Yankee catcher Carlos Narvaez, who worked a 7-pitch walk with 2 outs in the 4th. Rodon got the next out, but the Yanks then went out 1-2-3 against Dobbins in the bottom of the 4th on a total of 7 pitches.

So Rodon only got a 5-minute rest heading into the 5th and that seemed to throw him off. He got 2 pop outs to start the inning, but walked Ceddanne Rafaela and Kristian Campbell ripped a 2-run HR to left for a tie game.

3. LeMahieu HR in 5th Gives NY 3-2 Lead

DJ LeMahieu temporarily got the Yanks back the lead at 3-2 with a 2-out HR to right in the bottom of the 5th off Dobbins.

4. Rodon, Cruz & Hill Roughed Up in 5-Run 6th

Maybe Rodon was thinking too much — but was certainly out of rhythm to start the 6th. He hit Rafael Devers to start the inning, walked former Yank Rob Refsnyder, and then got clipped by a 3-run HR by former Yank Carlos Narvaez. Boston 5 NY 3.

Rodon was relieved by Fernando Cruz — and he struck out Romy Gonzalez, but allowed a double to Toro and single to Trevor Story before striking out Rafaela. With 2 outs, he walked Kristian Campbell to load the bases.

In came Tim Hill to face the lefty Jarren Duran — but he singled to center for 2 runs and it was 7-3 Boston.

5. Narvaez Haunts Yanks; Robbins Gets Win

The Yankees continue to bring up good catchers. With Austin Wells as the starting catcher and JC Esacara on the surprise rise, the Yanks traded the highly regarded Carlos Narvaez to Boston this winter for Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz, a 21-year-old 6’2 righty who is currently 3-2 2.95 as a starter in A+ ball at Hudson Valley.

Narvaez is the Red Sox starting catcher, slashing 6-22-.282 (.361 OBP).

Meanwhile, the Red Sox scoring 5 in the top of the 6th turned Robbins from being the losing pitcher, down 3-2, to the winning pitcher. He threw 5 innings, allowed 4 hits and 3 runs, and wins to go 3-1 4.20.

6. Yanks Pull Back to with 7-5

Down 7-3 after Boston’s 5-run rally in the top of the 6th, the Yanks got right back to work in the bottom of the 6th off reliever Brennan Bernadino.

Aaron Judge worked a 1-out walk, Cody Bellinger singled to left, and Paul Goldschmidt walked to load the bases.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a sac fly to left for a 7-4 game.

Garrett Whitlock relieved Bernardino, and Anthony Volpe reached on an infield single to load the bases, and Trent Grisham worked a walk for a run and 7-5 game.

7. Loaisiga Allows HR’s

Jonathan Loasiga pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 7th, and looked good — but not so good in the 8th when he allowed consecutive 1-out HR’s to Toro and Trevor Story as Boston took a 9-5 lead.

The Yanks came right back in the bottom of the 8th against Zack Kelly — a leadoff single by Goldschmidt and 1-out double by Anthony Volpe put runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out — but former Yank Greg Weissert came in and struck out Trent Grisham, and got DJ LeMahieu to line out to end the threat.

8. Headrick Allows HR

Brent Headrick allowed a HR to Rafael Devers in the top of the 9th to make it 10-5 Boston, then allowed a 1-out single to Narvaez and a 2-out double to Abraham Toro to make it 11-5.

9. Judge Bookends Game with 2-Run HR

Aaron Judge bookended the night with a 398-foot HR to opposite field right off R Stock in the 9th — plating Austin Wells who led off the inning with a walk.

Cody Bellinger followed with a walk, and Jazz Chisholm also walked with 2 outs — setting up a cheap save opportunity for former Yank Aroldis Chapman.

He came in and struck out Anthony Volpe for the old ballgame.
