Weaver Wastes The Martian’s Big Beautiful HR’s. Mets 6 Yankees 5

Luke Weaver coughed up a 2-run HR to Jeff McNeil in the 7th inning to blow a 5-4 lead and send the Mets on to a 6-5 win on a sunny, 80-degree July 4th, Saturday afternoon at Citifield.

It ruined a big day by Jasson Dominguez, aka The Martian, who hit 2 Big Beautiful HR’s — a HR to lead off the game, and a 2-run HR in the 5th to give the Yankees a 5-3 lead. Both HR’s were to the opposite (left) field batting lefty. He also walked and stole a base. This after going 4-for-5 with a triple and a double and stolen base the night before.

Weaver’s failure came just as President Trump was signing the “Big Beautiful Bill” at the White House at 5pm, causing some to change over to that broadcast and not even see it.

Weaver’s Big Beautiful Answers:

Afterwards, Weaver gave Big Beautiful answers to why he failed — thoughtful as usual:

“The big outliers are 3-2 counts to back-to-back hitters, giving them a chance to put the bat on the ball,” said Weaver afterwards. “And obviously the location you want to be more away to not give them a chance to scoop the ball to right.”

“I said I’ve been feeling good,” continued Weaver. “That might just be a lie now.  I don’t know. It’s hard to make sense of what’s going on. Obviously we kind of nit pick it and feel that you can do this better and that better. That may be true. But I also know that pitching and the game of baseball come in all different waves; and they don’t always work sometimes by accident. All the many things in between. I think at this point I’ve got 2 options: I can sulk and feel bad for myself, or I can foundationally grind and find a way to be flat out better — flat out better for myself, for my teammates and for this team in general and for the fans.”

“Competitively it’s just devastating,” added Weaver. “I try to give my wife and kids a big hug, and try to relieve myself from the tension I’m creating mentally and physically and just get back to the drawing board. I don’t think that what I’m doing is far off. I feel like I’m not winning big moments. I felt like earlier this year and last year I won more big moments than lost them. I’m not on the right side of that. It’s easy to nit pick it, but I feel like I just have to keep going.”

The Yankees lose their 5th in a row and drop to 48-40, 2 game back of Toronto in the AL East, and tied with Tampa. The Mets improve to 51-38, .5 behind Philly in the NL East.

1. Martian & Judge HR to Start It

The day started out great for the Yankees — as The Martian and Aaron Judge led off the top of the 1st with back-to-back HR’s off Mets righty starter Justin Hagenman.

Jasson Dominguez, leading off and batting lefty, hit a 94-MPH sinker 380 feet to right for a 1-0 Yankee lead.

Next batter Aaron Judge ripped a 94-MPH sinker 428 feet to left center and it was 2-0 Yankees.

2. Soto 2-run HR Ties It in Bottom of 1st

But Juan Soto came right back against Yankee starter and former Met Marcus Stroman.

Brandon Nimmo led off the bottom of the 1st with a double to left, and after a groundout, Juan Soto hit an 89-MPH cutter 393 feet to left center for a 2-2 tie game — to a lot of cheering at Citifield intermixed with some boos from Yankee fans.

3. Soto & Alonso Put Mets Ahead 3-2

Stroman pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 2nd, but Juan Soto got to him again in the 3rd — a 1-out double to center. Next batter Pete Alonso singled into the hole off the glove of Anthony Volpe — bringing Soto home for a 3-2 Mets lead.

4. Bellinger HR Ties It 3-3 in 4th

The Yanks came right back in the top of the 4th — a leadoff HR by Cody Bellinger off Hagenman — 4-5 feet to right.

5. The Martian HR Puts Yanks Up 5-3 in 5th

The Yanks then jumped on top in the top of the 5th — a 1-out single by DJ LeMahieu brought up Jasson Dominguez again.

The Mets relieved Hagenman with 6’2 righty Jasson Dominguez, and The Martian hit a 94-MPH sinker 356 feet to left for a 2-run HR and 5-3 Yankee lead.

6. Baty HR Off Hamilton Makes It 5-4 in 6th

Marcus Stroman pitched a shutout 4th and 5th — and was relieved by Ian Hamilton to start the 6th. Stroman — in his second start since the long stint on the IL — did his job: 5 IP, 7 hits, 3 runs, 4 K’s, 1 walk.

But Ian Hamilton didn’t — allowing a 1-out HR to Brett Baty, 370 feet to right for a 5-4 game.

Hamilton then allowed a single before getting a 2nd out, and being relieved by Tim Hill, who got the final out of the 6th.

7. Weaver Coughs Up the Hold As Trump Signs Bill

Tim Hill came back out to get the first 2 outs of the 7th — including getting Juan Soto to fly out to left.

With 2 outs and the righty Pete Alonso due up, the Yankees brought in Luke Weaver to face him.

But Weaver walked Alonso on a 3-2 pitch.

Just as festivities of Donald Trump signing the “Big Beautiful Bill” at the White House were kicking off at 5pm EST — causing some to switch to that broadcast on Rumble — Weaver went 3-1 to Jeff McNeil, came back with a strike on a four-seam fastball, then threw a 3-2, 87-MPH changeup that McNeil 398 feet to right for a 6-5 Mets lead.

Weaver struck out Torrens for the final out of the inning but the damage was done.

8. Mets’ Garrett Closes It

Scott Effross pitched a shutout 8th for the Yankees — so that was some good news.

But on the other end, the Mets brought out 32-year-old veteran righty Reed Garrett — who was coming off a 4-runs-in-.1-inning outing against Milwaukee.

Garrett pitched a shutout 8th — working around a 1-out single by Jazz Chisholm Jr. And then Garrett pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 9th — getting The Martian to ground out to 2nd for the old ballgame.
