Rodon Raked. Schmidt Out for Season. Mets 12 Yankees 6

Austin Wells hits his 12th HR of the year to make it a 5-2 game in the 3rd.

The Yanks are in freefall.

Losers of 6 in a row for the 2nd time in 3 weeks — the Yankees got ripped by the Mets 12-6 at Citifield on a gorgeous, sunny, summer Saturday late afternoon as Carlos Rodon was Ripped for a Grand Slam in the 1st inning, and allowed 7 runs through 5.

Worse yet, before the game it was announced that Clarke Schmidt was going to undergo Tommy John surgery.

Brandon Nimmo hit the grand slam, and Pete Alonso hit 2 (two) HR’s for 5 RBI’s. The Yankees lost to — get this — Frankie Montas, who pitched 5 innings allowing 4 runs.

At least Anthony Volpe broke out of Another slump with a HR. Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Austin Wells also hit HR’s for the Yanks.

The Yankees pulled back from a 7-2 deficit to make it a 7-5 ballgame in the 7th on Volpe’s HR — but Scott Effross and someone namedΒ Jayvien Sandridge opened the floodgates for the Mets in the bottom of the 7th.

“They’re a great team; they have great guys in their lineup,” said Carlos Rodon afterwards. “But it’s not that they’re unpitchable to. It’s just… they put together good at bats. Today I had a lot of misses and fell behind some guys. I should have been better at my craft. I just wasn’t good enough.”

The Yanks drop to 48-41 and are now 3 games back of Toronto, still in 2nd tied with Tampa. The Mets improve to 52-38, still .5 behind Philly in the NL East.

1. Rodon Bombed Early

Hard not to be disappointed that Carlos Rodon shit the bed again in a big start. The Yanks were reeling having lost 5 in a row — 4 straight to Toronto to fall out of 1st and then one to the Mets of all people.

They needed this one — and Rodon disappointed.

Starling Marte led off the bottom of the 1st with a double, Rodon walked Francisco Lindor, Juan Soto tried for a bunt single — was thrown out but moved the runners, and then Rodon walked Pete Alonso to load the bases.

Brandon Nimmo then hit a 1-2 slider for a Grand Slam and just like that it was Mets 4 Yanks 0. It was Nimmo’s 2nd grand slam in 3 nights.

2. Chisholm HR Makes It 4-1

Jazz Chisholm Jr. came right back with a solo HR to left center off Frankie Montas in the top of the 2nd to make it a 4-1 game.

3. Wells HR Makes It 5-2

But Jazz gave it right back in the bottom of the 2nd with a 1-out throwing error that allowed centerfielder Tyrone Taylor to get on and get to 2nd base — and Rodon did not pick up his infielder — immediately allowing an RBI single to Starling Marte for a 5-1 Mets lead.

Still the Yanks came right back — Austin Wells leading off the top of the 3rd with a line shot 372 feet to right for a 5-2 game. β€œThat was a screaming 5 iron,” said Dave Sims on the radio broadcast.

4. Rodon Settles Down — Until Alonso HR in 5th

After the RBI single by Marte in the 2nd, Rodon settled down — retiring 8 in a row, including a 1-2-3 inning in the 3rd and 4th.

But in the 5th, he walked Francisco Lindor with 1 out, and with 2 outs, Pete Alonso rocked a 94-MPH four-seam fastball 382 feet to center to turn a 5-2 game into a 7-2 game.

5. Volpe Hits Judge in the Eye with Ball

As the top of the 6th inning started, Aaron Judge was sporting a band aide over his right eye. It was revealed that Anthony Volpe accidentally hit him with a thrown ball as Judge was jogging off the field to end the 5th.

6. Bellinger 2-RBI Double Makes It 7-4 in 6th

Frankie Montas also settled down after the Austin Wells homer — retiring 9 in a row including a 1-2-3 inning in the 4th and 5th. It looked like he’d be gone after 5 but the Mets bullpen has been as shaky as the Yankees’ has been — so Montas was back out for the 6th.

It was an inning too long — Oswald Peraza led off with an infield single, Trent Grisham followed with a single to left, and after Judge grounded out to advance the runners — Cody Bellinger blooped a double to left center to drive in 2 and make it 7-4.

7. Volpe HR Off “Dicky Lovelady” Makes It 7-5 in 7th

After the Bellinger 2-RBI double, Montas got one more out and was yanked for Richard Lovelady — who prefers to be called “Dicky”.

Dicky got the last out of the 6th and the 1st out of the 7th — striking out The Martian Jasson Dominguez.

But Anthony Volpe ripped a 3-2 sweeper 408 feet to center for a homer and it was a 7-5 game in the 7th!

8. Effross & Sandridge Open Floodgates in 7th

Scott Effross had pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 6th but he allowed a leadoff double to Ronny Mauricio in the bottom of the 7th, and then an RBI single to Francisco Lindor and it was 8-5 Mets.

Sandridge Story

Boone brought in 26-year-old, 6’5 lefty rookie Sandridge to face lefty Juan Soto. Sandridge was just added to the roster before the Mets series, replacing Clarke Schmidt who had been put on the IL with forearm tightness, as the Yanks awaited the MRI test results.

Sandridge, out of Hagerstown, Maryland, was originally drafted by the Baltimore Orioles at age 19, and spent 6 years in their minor league system — making it to AAA — before being picked up by the Yankees this winter. He is 1-0 0.87 with AAA Scranton so far this season in 10.1 innings, with only 6 hits allowed and 19 strikeouts.

Sandridge went 1-2 on Soto, but then walked him with 3 straight balls — and then faced righty Pete Alonso who ripped a 392-foot bomb to left for an 11-5 Mets lead.

Sandridge did strike out Brandon Nimmo and Mark Vientos after the Alonso HR, but then walked a batter and hit Jeff McNeil with a pitch so was relieved by JT Brubaker.

9. Rice RBI Double Makes It 11-6 in 8th

The Mets brought in Ryne Stanek to pitch the 8th. Stanek is now 33 but still throws 100 MPH fastballs. Stanek walked Aaron Judge to start the 8th; Bellinger hit into a fielder’s choice, then went to 2nd on a wild pitch by Stanek, and scored on a Ben Rice RBI double. Mets 11 Yankees 6.

But in the bottom of the 8th, JT Brubaker allowed a 1-out double by Francisco Lindor and RBI single by Juan Soto to make it 12-6 Mets.

Edwin Diaz pitched the 9th — yielding a 1-out single to DJ LeMahieu but getting the final 2 outs for the old ballgame.
