Yanks Get Swept Out of 1st. The Martian 4 Hits. Toronto 8 NY 5

Jasson Dominguez aka The Martian triples in the 4th, part of a 4-hit day.

A lot of bad news for the Yankees… and a little bit of good.

The Yanks lost again to the Blue Jays — 8-5 on a Thursday night in Toronto — and were swept in the 4-game series, falling out of 1st place, now 1 game behind Toronto.

On top of it Clarke Schmidt left the game after 3 innings complaining of forearm tightness. He will be getting an MRI.

On top of it Luke Weaver coughed up a single and a Homer in the 8th to put the game out of reach — turning a 6-5 game into an 8-5 game. Weaver has been a bit shaky since returning from the hamstring injury.

But a little bit of good news: Jasson Dominguez aka The Martian continues to look like the Real Deal. The 22-year-old phenom rookie went 4-5 with a double and a triple and a stolen base, raising his slash line to 6-30-.267 (.345 OBP) in 243 At Bats.

“Probably been dealing with it for 3 or 4 weeks,” said Clarke Schmidt afterwards. “I think back to the Cleveland start is when I started to feel it. We were trying to make it slower in between. Just been focusing on trying to get back every start; and we were obviously able to do that and get into a good place. But the 5-day turn this week. Earlier in the game it felt ok, but as the game progressed it started to tighten up on me.”

“I felt like the whole night I was guarding it a bit,” added Schmidt. “On the breaking balls and stuff — not ripping them or getting a lot behind them, so I felt like I was kind of cutting some stuff off and it was obviously reflecting in my stuff.”

NY drops to 48-39, in a tie with Tampa for 2nd place, 1 game behind Toronto at 49-38.

1. Grisham HR Ties It 1-1 in 2nd

Schmidt allowed a 1-out walk to George Springer and a 2-out RBI double to Addison Barger in the bottom of the 1st to put Toronto up 1-0.

Chris Bassitt started for Toronto and pitched shutout ball the first 2 innings and it looked like it might be a long night for NY. But Trent Grisham opened up the 3rd with a 409-foot homer to center for a tie game.

2. Schmidt Leaves After 3 with Forearm Tightness

But Schmidt was not himself — and immediately put the Yanks behind again in the bottom of the 3rd — allowing a leadoff double to Nathan Lukes and a 2-run HR to George Springer.

Schmidt would allow another double in the inning (to Barger) with 1 out, before getting the final outs and ending his night.

3. The Martian, Volpe, Wells Combo Tie Game 3-3

The Yanks came right back against Chris Bassitt in the top of the 4th — a 1-out Triple by Jasson Dominguez to center, and an RBI single by Anthony Volpe made it 3-2.fff

Next batter Austin Wells doubled to center to put runners on 2nd and 3rd, and after Oswald Peraza struck out, Volpe scored on a wild pitch by Bassitt for a tie game, 3-3.

4. Beeter Bettered in 14-Pitch At Bat

And so news came across the wire that Schmidt was removed from the game due to forearm tightness, and Clayton Beeter was in to start the 4th.

Beeter may not have been ready — and he came ‘this close’ to doing good — but was ultimately bettered and battered.

A walk (to Will Wagner), a single (by Schneider), and a sacrifice (by Jimenez), put runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out.

Beeter then went tet-a-tet with Lukes — a 14-pitch at bat — and on the 14th pitch Nathan Lukes defended the plate and slashed an opposite field hit just fair down the 3rd base line for a 2-RBI double. Toronto 5 NY 3.

Beeter allowed a solo HR to Barger leading off the bottom of the 5th to make it 6-3 Toronto. He retired the next 2 batters, then walked Will Wagner and was relieved by Jonathan Loaisiga who struck out Schneider to end the 5th.

5. Yanks Rally to Close to 6-5 in 7th

Chris Bassitt left after 6 and the Yankees pounced on reliever Brendon Fisher. Aaron Judge led off with an infield single, Cody Bellinger singled to right, and Jazz Chisholm ripped an RBI double to center.

With 2nd and 3rd and nobody out, The Martian struck out for his only out of the night.

Old friend Chad Green came in, and Anthony Volpe grounded out to score a run and make it 6-5.

Green walked Austin Wells to put runners on 1st and 3rd — the Yanks were a hit away from tying it. But Giancarlo Stanton grounded out to the pitcher.

6. Weaver Coughs Up 2-Run HR in 8th

Mark Leiter Jr. pitched a shutout 7th, but Luke Weaver failed in the 8th — after getting the first 2 outs, he allowed a single to Lukes and a 2-run HR to George Springer for an 8-5 game.

7. The Martian Gets 4th Hit in 9th

Toronto ace reliever Jeff Hoffman was in for the 9th. Jasson Dominguez got his 4th hit of the night — a 1-out double to left. But Volpe lined out to 1st, and Austin Wells lined out to center for the old ballgame.
