Jasson Dominguez hit a 2-run homer in the 7th inning, and Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a 2-run homer in the 8th inning, but it wasn’t enough to come back from a 6-0 deficit as the Yankees lost in Cleveland, 6-4 on a Monday night.
Clarke Schmidt walked a few batters but was pitching a shutout into the 3rd inning when he got clipped for HR’s by 2 power hitters — Jose Ramirez ripping a down-and-in slider for a 3-run homer, and next batter Kyle Manzardo ripping a first-pitch 93-MPH sinker for a solo homer. Schmidt struck out the next 2 batters but the damage was done.
Schmidt allowed another run in the 4th on a double and single, and had bases loaded 1 out, but got out of it and left after 4 innings. Yoendrys Gomez came in and allowed a run in the 5th for the 6-0 deficit, but ended up pitching 3 solid innings. Ryan Yarbrough pitched a shutout 8th.
“Obviously the walks were frustrating,” said Schmidt afterwards. “Beyond that I think I made some good pitches. The Ramirez one you have to tip your cap on — really good hitter. I was trying to go down and in with a slider and I got to my area where I was trying to get to, and he put a good swing on it. Overall I thought I was getting to good areas when I was competing and in my counts.”
“Obviously I didn’t do a great job of giving my team a chance to win tonite, added Schmidt. It was his 2nd start of the year. “I felt good; felt healthy; thought my stuff was really good; velocity was good. Got a lot of swing and miss; lotta strikeouts. The walks are frustrating; that’s something we’ll work on.”
NY falls to 14-9. Cleveland improves to 13-9.
1. Schmidt Got Clipped in 3rd
Clarke Schmidt worked around 2 walks in the 1st and cruised through the 2nd, with a shutout into the 3rd when he ran into trouble — leadoff singles by shortstop Brayan Rocchio and Steven Kwan.
Schmidt got a strikeout for out #1, but Jose Ramirez hit an 0-1 slider low and inside for a 390-foot homer to right and it was a 3-0 game.
Next batter Kyle Manzardo hit a first-pitch sinker 366 feet to right and it was 4-0 just like that.
2. Schmidt Gets Out of Jam in 4th
Schmidt struck out the last 2 batters of the 3rd, but ran into more trouble in the 4th — a leadoff double by Angel Martinez, and a 1-out RBI single by Rocchio to make it 5-0 Cleveland.
Kwan doubled to right to put runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out, and then Schmidt walked rightfielder Nolan Jones to load the bases.
But Schmidt got out of the jam without further damage — getting Ramirez to hit a shallow fly to center and striking out Manzardo to end the inning and his day. His line: 4 innings, 7 hits, 5 runs, 7 K’s, 3 walks.
3. Williams Shuts NY Down with 99-MPH Heat & Curveball
Cleveland started 24-year-old, 6’6 righthander Gavin Williams, knicknamed “The Big Rig”. Williams primarily throws a four-seam fastball that clocks at 99 MPH and an 82-MPH curve, with occasional 88-MPH sweeper.
The Yanks got off to a good start against him in the top of the 1st — with Austin Wells reaching on an error and Aaron Judge walking — but Cody Bellinger grounded into a double play to quash the rally. Paul Goldschmidt walked, but Williams struck out Jazz Chisholm Jr. on 3 straight 99-MPH fastballs.
It was going to be that kind of day against Williams.
He got lots of strikeouts on his heater, and lots of ground outs and some double plays on his curveball.
He pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 2nd, striking out 2, allowed a 2-out double to Aaron Judge off one of his fastballs in the 3rd — but got the final out on a fly out, and allowed a leadoff single to Paul Goldschmidt — erased on a tremendous diving catch of a liner turned into a double play by Ramirez at 1st.

Williams allowed 2 singles with 1 out in the 5th — to Jose Reyes and Oswaldo Cabrera — but Austin Wells hit a curveball on the ground for a double play.
Then Williams reached for his Sweeper in the 6th — striking out 3 in the inning around a 1-out single to Cody Bellinger.

4. The Martian Monster HR Makes It 6-2
The Yanks finally got to “The Big Rig” in the 7th, when Williams’ fastball was notching down to 95 MPH.
Down 6-0, Anthony Volpe laced a 94-MPH four-seam fastball to center for a leadoff single, and Jasson Dominguez followed with a 7-pitch at bat, fouling off 3 pitches — a curve and 2 95-MPH fastballs, before ripping an 81-MPH curve for a 445-foot, 2-run homer to right.

5. Gomez Good
Meanwhile Yoendrys Gomez relieved Schmidt for the 5th and allowed a leadoff walk to Brayan Rocchio, who was replaced on the bases when Steven Kwan hit into a fielder’s choice. Gomez got the 2nd out on a line out to center but Kwan stole 2nd and scored on a 2-out Ramirez single to right for a 6-0 Cleveland lead.
But Gomez — the 25-year-old 6’3 righty — used his 77-MPH changeup and assortment of breaking pitches to throw a shutout 6th and 7th and finished the day with a very solid outing. 3 innings, 3 hits, 1 run. His ERA is at 2.70.
6. Jazz HR Makes it 6-4
The Yanks made it a game in the 8th off reliever Sewald — with 2 outs Paul Goldschmidt singled to left and Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a 383-foot homer to right for a 6-4 game.

Anthony Volpe walked against new relief pitcher Joey Cantillo — and Jasson Dominguez came up as the tying run at the plate. But Cantillo struck him out on a 1-2, 94-MPH fastball.
The Yanks brought the tying run to the plate in the 9th as well — Oswaldo Cabrera singled with 1 out against Cleveland elite setup man Cade Smith.
But Smith — using a 98-MPH fastball and 88-MPH splitter — reared back and struck out Austin Wells and Aaron Judge — both on 88-MPH splitters after starting out with fastballs — for the old ballgame.
