Will Warren Pitches Great. Yankees Lose. Cleveland 3 NY 2

Will Warren throws 1-hit shutout into 6th

Will Warren pitched a 1-hit shutout into the 6th inning against a tough Cleveland lineup, when he allowed 2 leadoff singles and was relieved by Mark Leiter Jr. with the Yankees leading 2-0.

Mark Leiter Jr.didn’t pitch badly, getting soft contact, but things went awry and the Guardians scored 3 runs to win the game 3-2 on a Tuesday night in Cleveland.

Two of the runs were charged to Warren, so he didn’t get a win — but you couldn’t take away his best performance to date — the pitcher they call the next Michael King.

Ben Rice had put the Yanks on top with a leadoff homer in the 1st on the 1st pitch of the game, and Aaron Judge went 4 for 4 with a great catch in right — but the Yanks still came away with their 2nd loss in a row to Cleveland.

“Some kind of squirely plays where they put the ball in play,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards about the 6th inning. “The spinner to Volpe, there’s not much you can do other than try and smother it with your body like a catcher. I thought Mark threw the ball well they just put some balls in play that we couldn’t quite make the great play on and that was the difference tonite.”

“I thought he threw the ball so well,” added Boone about Warren. “Really encouraging outing for him. Life to the heater; putting it where he wanted to; getting ahead. Looked real aggressive and on the attack and pitching with confidence. That’s what he’s capable of right there, so, good to see him have an outing like that.”

NY falls to 14-10; Cleveland improves to 14-9.

1. Rice Leads Off Game with HR

Ben Rice hit a homerun off the first pitch of the game by Cleveland starter Tanner Bibee — 377 feet to right for a 1-0 Yankee lead.

2. Warren Terrific

Then Will Warren — who was pulled in the 2nd inning of his last start — took the mound and allowed a leadoff single to Steven Kwan and here we go again.

But Warren got consecutive fielder’s-choice grounders and struck out Kyle Manzardo, and started a tour de force 5 innings of work. His 93-MPH fastball had giddy up and his sweeper was wicked.

In the 2nd inning, Warren worked around a 1-out error by Jazz Chisholm and a 2-out walk. He then pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 3rd, 4th, and 5th — striking out 3 and getting easy groundouts and fly outs.

The one hard hit ball was the last out of the 5th — a liner to right that Aaron Judge made a great, diving catch on.

3. Judge Leadoff Double Leads to 2-0 in 6th

After making the great catch in the bottom of the 5th, Judge led off the top of the 6th with a double to right — and how many times do you see that, a guy makes a great defensive play and then leads off the next inning, Phil Rizzuto used to ask all the time.

Cody Bellinger grounded out, keeping Judge stuck at 2nd, but Paul Goldschmidt reached on an infield single, sending Judge to 3rd, and Jazz Chisholm Jr. plated him with a sac fly. Yankees 2 Formerly-the-Indians 0 and things were looking good for NY.

4. Trouble in the 6th

But leadoff singles in the bottom of the 6th by Steven Kwan and Nolan Jones sent Warren to the showers at 82 pitches and Mark Leiter Jr. was summoned to squash the uprising.

Leiter struck out Jose Ramirez with one of his filthy splitters and things were looking good.

But Leiter threw a splitter in the dirt and Kwan and Jones did a double steal — so it was 2nd and 3rd with 1 out.

Manzardo then hit a liner to right that Judge charged in and dove for but just missed getting — it went for a double and a 2-2 tie.

Leiter got Carlos Santana to ground out for the 2nd out — but walked Josh Naylor, and then Angel Martinez hit a sharp grounder to Volpe near 2nd base that had a lot of English on it — it bounced off Volpe’s chest and a run scored. It was initially ruled an error but changed to a hit.

Daniel Schneemann then reached on an infield single to Volpe and bases were loaded with 2 outs.

Tim Hill came in and restored order — a fly out to right to end the inning with bases loaded.

5. Hill & Weaver Great

And Hill pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 7th as well — bunt out to the pitcher by Kwan, ground out, ground out.

Luke Weaver pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 8th — ground out, foul out, foul out — keeping the score at 3-2.

6. Cleveland Bullpen Stifles Yanks

But the damage had been done. Tim Herrin relieved Bibee to start the 7th, and pitched a shutout inning.

The Yanks managed a rally in the 8th against Hunter Gaddis — Judge leading off with a single and Chisholm drawing a 2-out walk — but with Judge the tying run on 2nd, Gaddis struck out Volpe.

Cade Smith pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 9th for the old ballgame.
