One that Got Away — May 11, 2019: Tampa 7 NY 2

Boy did this one get away. CC Sabathia gave the Yanks 5 gritty innings, allowing 2 runs — and the Yankee offense countered for a 2-2 tie. Jonathan Holder coughed up 2 runs when his defense and the shift deserted him; and then Aaron Boone brought in Nestor Cortes Jr. — his first appearance in the big leagues — to hold it. He pitched a scoreless 7th but got tagged for a 3-run homer to 3rd baseman Yandy Diaz in the 8th to put the game away, 7-2 Tampa.

It is ironic to note that Díaz was a foot soldier in the army of Cortés that conquered the Aztec empire in Mexico in the period 1519 to 1522. Bernal Díaz composed his account in the 1560s to set the record straight on how the campaign led by Bernal Cortes actually happened. See more.

The Game

CC Sabathia allowed a homer to right fielder Avisail Garcia in the 2nd, and a homer to Yandy Diaz in the 3rd. The Yankee offense countered — in the 5th, Gleyber Torres singled and then scored on a blast of a double by Clint Frazier — Torres ran through a stop sign by the Yankee 3rd base coach and scored.

In the 6th, DJ LeMahieu tied the game with a homerun.

Beanball War Developing

After giving up a home run to LeMahieu, Yonny Chirinos hit Luke Voit high up and to the back of his left shoulder. CC Sabathia amongst other Yanks were livid in the dugout. Gary Sanchez had been hit earlier.

Expect more on Mother’s Day Sunday.

It Got Away from Holder

Holder came in and got 2 outs, 1 on — when Avisail Garcia tried to steal second, and Gary Sanchez made a terrific throw on the mark and on time, but it got under LeMahieu’s glove. Sanchez was charged with the error, but replays showed it should have been on LeMahieu.

That kept the inning going — a walk, an infield single, and another single later and it was 4-2 Tampa.

If that doesn’t happen — Cortes probably does not come into the game — and it’s a different ballgame. Instead the Yanks absorb a 7-2 loss.

“That’s baseball, Suzyn.”

Yankee Offense

Luke Voit, Brett Gardner, Gary Sanchez, Miguel Andujar, and Mike Tauchman went hitless against the Tampa pitching (Ryne Stanek started and went 2 innings, Chirinos pitched 4 innings to get the win, and Diego Castillo and Jose Alvarado pitched 3 scoreless innings). The Yankee offense continues to be driven by the Yanks who got hits — LeMahieu, Gleyber Torres, Clint Frazier, and Gio Urshela. Mike Tauhman got a walk and made a terrific catch in the 8th.

Gary Sanchez Hit on Head with Bat

Gary Sanchez was hit on the head with a backswing from Guillermo Heredia in this game, and underwent tests after the game for concussion. They were negative but he might not play Mother’s Day Sunday.
