Lights Out — May 12, 2019: NY 7 Tampa Bay 1

And then the lights went out.

Tropicana Field strikes again. The Yankees had:

  • figured out Tampa ace Blake Snell for 2 runs in the top of the 5th,
  • squeezed across an insurance run in the 8th against the pen,
  • had Zack Britton pitch his way out of 2nd & 3rd, 1-out situation in the bottom of the 8th, striking out the last 2 guys,
  • and took a 3-1 lead to the 9th…

when the lights went out at Tropicana Field.

Balls hit ceilings and drop for singles (Friday night); balls go up and can’t be seen well against the ceiling (all series); and now — “thank you for your patience while we are experiencing technical difficulties.”

After a long delay — 43 minutes — the game resumed and the Yanks were ready — Thairo Estrada led off the 9th with a homerun.

Austin Romine and Mike Tauchman singled; Luke Voit was walked to load the bases, and Gio Urshela (surprise) doubled in 2 runs to put the game away. Brett Gardner got a sac fly for the final score, 7-1.

End Game

Chad Green — back up from the minors where he made adjustments to his delivery — pitched the 9th and more good news — he looked great as he struck out the side. According to Austin Romine, his fastball was fast and hitting his glove hard.

Tanaka Outdueled Snell

Masahiro Tanaka was light’s out. His slider was sliding; his splitter was splitting; his fastball was used to throw them off. He pitched 7 innings, 5 hits, 1 run, 7 strikeouts. He ran into a little trouble in the 6th — allowing a homerun to DH Austin Meadows, a single to 1st baseman Ji-Man Choi and a double to 3rd baseman Yandy Diaz — but his pitch count was only in the 50’s so he stayed in. He got the final out of the 6th and breezed through the 7th.

The Yanks were flummoxed by Snell early — he looked unhittable and in total command. But then in the 5th, Austin Romine hit a double to left; Mike Tauchman SMOKED a double to center off the top of the wall to make it 1-0 Yanks, and then DJ LeMahieu hit a line drive to the opposite field just past the 1st baseman down the line to make it 2-0.

Other Yanks

The Yanks got 9 hits — LeMahieu, Romine, and Tauchman got 2 each. Miguel Andujar took another collar — he has one hit since his return from injury. Cameron Maybin and Clint Frazer also went hitless but both walked.

Gary Sanchez had the day off after being hit with the bat on an overswing yesterday. Gleyber Torres also had the day off. Mother’s Day. A rainy day in NY but dry (and at times dark) under the dome in Tampa.

With the win the Yanks took the series in Tampa, and pull back to a half game behind them for the division lead; Yanks are 24-16; Tampa 24-15.
