McMahon & Grisham Clutch RBI Singles Win It! NY 4 Seattle 1

Ryan McMahon 2-RBI single in the 7th puts NY up 2-1.

Finally some singles!

In yet another MLB game of all Homeruns and Strikeouts due to the lively ball and maxed-out pitching staffs — NY was down 1-0 in the 7th (after a solo HR by Randy Arozarena the prior inning) — when the Yankees put together an old fashioned rally of doubles and singles and walks for 4 runs and a 4-1 win over Seattle on a HUMID Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium.

To that point the Yanks were being shut out on 3 hits by Bryan Woo, and Ryan Weathers had a 1-hit shutout until the Arozarena HR in the 6th.

Woo left after 5 innings, and 32-year-old journeyman righthander Michael Rucker came in. And of course even he was throwing 97 MPH heat with the lively ball.

But Luis Garcia Jr. hit one of those fastballs and just missed a HR — banging it off the rightfield wall for a double.

And just when it seemed the single was extinct — Jazz Chisholm Jr. singled, George Lombard Jr. struck out, Spencer Jones worked a big walk to load the bases, and the Yankees got 3 more straight singles: Ryan McMahon singled in 2 runs for a 2-1 Yankee lead, Austin Wells blooped a single off new pitcher Eduard Bazardo, and Trent Grisham singled in 2 more runs.

Brent Headrick pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 8th and David Bednar closed.

“I thought we had really good at bats early too, against Woo,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards. “We got a long ways to go. Hopefully this is us moving the needle to get closer to the offense we can be.”

NY improves to 67-52 but remain 6 behind red-hot Tampa, which has won 8 in a row. The Red Sox lost to fall 3 behind NY. Seattle improves to 56-64.

1. Woo Shuts Down Yanks

Bryan Woo went 15-7 2.94 last year, establishing himself as one of the best pitchers in the American League. The 26-year-old righthander is 8-8 4.15 this year after 5 innings of shutout ball against the Yankees.

He was throwing a lot of 97-MPH four-seam fastballs and filthy 88-MPH sliders, as well as an 88-MPH changeup, a 97-MPH sinker, and an occasional 83-MPH sweeper.

NY got some baserunners off Woo in the first 3 innings to no avail:

  • Ben Rice worked a 1-out walk on him in the 1st, and Luis Garcia Jr. doubled with 2 outs — but Woo got Jazz Chisholm Jr. to fly out, leaving the runners on 2nd and 3rd.
  • George Lombard Jr. led off the 2nd with a single, but was caught stealing.
  • Trent Grisham hit a 1-out double in the 4rd, but was left stranded there after Woo got a strikeout and groundout.

Woo then started cruising — pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the 4th and 5th.

2. Weathers Great — Clipped by HR in 6th

Meanwhile Ryan Weathers was pitching great too — with a 1-hit shutout into the 6th.

“More really good,” said Boone about Weathers. “I thought it was a bit of a grind for him. A lot of long at bats. I think he ended up with a few walks, which he’s done a really good job of avoiding walks. I thought they put a lot of tough at bats. But the end of the day he’s 2 outs into the 6th giving up only 1 run. Stuff and execution was again good, just a lot of long at bats made it more of a grind of a night for him.”

Yankee Defense Strong

Weathers got some help from his defense — George Lombard Jr. making a one-handed play with rifle throw to 1st in the 1st:

And Ryan McMahon made another Graig Nettles -esq play at 3rd in the 2nd.

Weathers allowed a 2-out infield single and a walk in the 2nd, then retired 10 in a row.

But with 1 out in the 6th, Randy Arozarena hit a 2-2 sinker 351 feet to right for a 1-0 Seattle lead.

3. Hill Relieves Weathers in 6th — Gets Win

After the Arozarena HR, Weathers got an out then walked a batter and was relieved by Tim Hill, who got the last out of the 6th, then pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 7th — getting 4 straight groundouts.

4. Yanks Get Old-Fashioned 4-Run Rally in 7th

Woo left after 5 innings, and J Ferrer came in to pitch a 1-2-3 shutout 6th.

So things were looking FRUSTRATINGLY bad for NY, down 1-0 in the 7th, when veteran journeyman Michael Rucker came in. The 32-year-old, 6’1 righty was throwing 97 MPH heat.

The Yanks needed a long ball and almost got one as Luis Garcia Jr. hit a drive to right that banged off the wall for a double.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. followed with a single to right to put runners on the corners with nobody out.

With 1 out, and the runner on 3rd — all the Yankees needed was a sac fly.

But Rucker struck out George Lombard Jr. and here we go again.

And then — just when hope started to fade — Spencer Jones worked a 6-pitch walk, and Ryan McMahon hit a 2-1 curveball past shortstop — as Jazz Chisholm Jr.had to dodge out of the way — for a 2-RBI single to left and 2-1 Yankee lead.

New pitcher Eduard Bazardo was brought in and Austin Wells blooped a fly to right that fell in for a single, and Trent Grisham singled to left for 2 more runs and a 4-1 Yankee lead.

5. Headrick 1-2-3

The game seemed over already.

Brent Headrick came in and pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 8th, striking out the first two batters.

6. Bednard Closes — with Help from Jazz D on Sprained Ankle

David Bednar pitched the 9th — striking out the first batter, then allowing a hard-hit grounder up the middle by DH Dominic Canzone that Jazz Chisholm Jr. tried to make a backhand play on, and seemed to tweek his ankle while doing so. It went for a single.

Jazz stayed in the game and then made a terrific play on a grounder toward 2nd — almost turning a double play with Lombard.

Bednar then struck out Cal Raleigh (having a rough year — 12-43-.159, .264 OBP) with 4 four-seam fastballs for the old ballgame.
