Spencer Jones & Trent Grisham Bomb Away. NY 10 Seattle 5

Trent Grisham's 1st HR of the night makes it a 5-4 game in the 5th.

Spencer Jones hit a 2-RBI double off the left field wall, and an RBI double off the right field wall, and Trent Grisham went 3-5 with 2 HR’s and 4 RBI’s to lead NY to a 10-5 win over Seattle on a Humid Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium.

The Yankees came back from a 4-1 deficit and 5-3 deficit, courtesy Will Warren coughing up 3 HR balls.

The Yankee bullpen of Fernando Cruz, Tim Hill, Paul Blackburn, Brent Headrick, and Yerry de los Santos pitched shutout ball for the last 5 innings.

Spencer Jones‘ first double — just missing a homer as it hit off the left field wall — drove in 2 runs to make it a 4-3 game in the 3rd inning. Jones’ double off the right field wall — again just missing a HR — tied the game 5-5 in the 5th after Trent Grisham had just homered to pull NY within 5-4. Grisham doubled in a run in the 7th to put NY up 6-5, and then hit a 2-run HR in the 8th to make it 10-5.

In between all that, Ben Rice went 2 for 4 with 3 runs scored; Ryan McMahon went 2 for 4 with an RBI; George Lombard Jr. went 2 for 4 with 2 runs scored; Jazz Chisholm Jr. went 1 for 3 with an RBI and run scored; and Austin Wells went 1 for 2 with a double and run scored, raising his average to .180. A good day for the Yankee offense against Bryce Miller and the Mariner pen.

“Randy (Arozarena) hits that ball, sweeper off the plate — and somehow hooks it — doesn’t slice it down the line he hooks the thing — I don’t know if it was impressive — accidental — wow,” said manager Aaron Boone about Warren. “And then missed with a pitch to Julio (Rodriguez) and left it up in the middle and he’s able to muscle it out. Never got into a great rhythm. Had a really good 4th inning — a shutdown inning which was big after we climbed back into the game. And then Randy put a tough at bat on him to start the 5th and I felt it was time to get him.”

NY improves to 68-53 and remain 6 behind Tampa (which won their 9th in a row), but are now 4 ahead of Boston, which lost their 5th in a row. Seattle falls to 56-65.

1. Warren Gives Up HR Balls

The game had just started on a Humid Wednesday night at Yankee Stadium when 2nd baseman Cole Young lined a 1-out single to left and leftfielder Randy Arozarena hit an 85-MPH sweeper from Will Warren just inside the right-field foul pole for a 2-0 Mariner lead.

Warren got a groundout for the 2nd out, but Julio Rodriguez hit a 1-2, 96-MPH four-seam fastball from Warren into the upper deck in right for a 3-0 lead.

Warren allowed a leadoff double and a walk in the 2nd — but got out of it with a strikeout and double play.

But with 2 outs in the 3rd, rightfielder Dominic Canzone hit a HR to right and it was a 4-1 Seattle lead.

2. McMahon Doubles in a Run to Make It 3-1 in 2nd

Bryce Miller started for Seattle. The 27-year-old, 6’2 righty with a 97-MPH four-seam fastball pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 1st, and got the first 2 outs of the 2nd — but with 2 outs, Jazz Chisholm Jr. reached on an infield single and Ryan McMahon doubled him home for a 3-1 game — McMahon was thrown out trying to stretch his double into a triple.

3. S Jones Doubles to Left to Make It 4-3 in 3rd

Austin Wells doubled to right to start the 3rd. Bryce Miller got the next 2 outs on a strikeout and pop out, but Ben Rice worked a walk, and Spencer Jones doubled off the left field wall for 2 runs and a 4-3 game.

4. Warren Leaves; Cruz Gets Bailed Out by Hill

Warren pitched a shutout 4th — but walked Randy Arozarena in a 12-pitch at bat to start the 5th — where Arozarena fouled off 3 straight 2-2 pitches and fouled off 3 straight 3-2 pitches. After that Boone relieved him with Fernando Cruz.

Cruz got a pop out but walked Julio Rodriguez and allowed an RBI single to Josh Naylor for a 5-3 game.

Tim Hill relieved Cruz, and got an inning-ending double play — a grounder right back to him.

5. S Jones Doubles to Right to Tie It 5-5 in 5th

Bryce Miller got the first 2 outs of the bottom of the 5th, but Trent Grisham hit a first-pitch, 95-MPH sinker for a solo HR to right and a 5-4 game.

Next batter Ben Rice ripped a 2-out double to right, and Spencer Jones hit one off the wall in right center for a 5-5 tie.

6. Grisham RBI Double & Rice RBI Single Put NY Ahead 7-5 in 7th

McMahon hit a shot off the rightfield wall with 2 outs in the 6th but got thrown out trying to leg it into a double — the second time on the night he got thrown out trying to take an extra base on a hit.

Seattle brought in 5’11 lefty Gabe Speier to pitch the 7th and the Yankees pounced. George Lombard Jr. lined a 1-out single to center, and Trent Grisham doubled him home for a 6-5 Yankee lead.

Next batter Ben Rice ripped a single to center for a 7-5 Yankee lead.

Speier then hit Spencer Jones with a pitch, and he and Rice executed a double steal.

Speier struck out Luis Garcia Jr. and with 2 outs the Mariners intentionally walked Heliot Ramos to load the bases.

Speier then walked Jazz Chisholm Jr. with the bases loaded for an 8-5 Yankee lead.

7. Grisham 2-Run HR Makes It 10-5 in 8th

Trent Grisham hit his 2nd HR of the night in the 8th — a 2-run job off 6’3 righty Nick Davila that plated George Lombard Jr. who had singled in front of him — for a 10-5 game.

8. Hill to Blackburn to Headrick to de Los Santos = 5 Shutout Innings

After getting the double play to end the 5th, Tim Hill walked Cal Raleigh Jr to lead off the 6th but got an out and yielded to Paul Blackburn.

George Lombard Jr. then made the first error of his MLB career on a grounder to put runners on 1st and 2nd with 1 out. But Blackburn reared back and got a pop out and ground out to end the 6th with the score tied 5-5.

Blackburn then pitched a shutout 7th (to get the win).

Brent Headrick struck out the side in the top of the 8th in an 8-5 game.

Yerry de los Santos worked around 2 singles to pitch a shutout 9th for the old ballgame.
