Logan Gilbert pitched 6 innings of 4-hit shutout ball and the Mariner bullpen took it from there to out-duel Max Fried and the Yankee pen 1-0 on a beautiful, 85-degree Thursday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.
Fried allowed a solo HR to Weston Wilson in the 2nd inning for the only run of the game.
Ryan Yarbrough, Yerry de los Santos and Fernando Cruz finished with 4 shutout innings for the Yanks, while Eduard Bazardo, Jose Ferrer, and Andres Munoz shut the Yanks down the last 3 innings for Seattle.
“I thought Gilbert’s — whose obviously a really good pitcher — I thought his split was really good today, and plus he’s got 98 to 100 in the tank,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards. “I thought he mixed well. Couple of small opportunities but after a handful of at bats where I felt like we were on him early, he really settled in and shut us down.”
NY still won the series 2 games to 1, but falls to 68-53 — 6.5 behind idle Tampa and 3 ahead of Boston. Seattle improves to 57-65.
1. Fried Blinks in 2nd Inning
Fried pitched “pretty good,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards. “A lot of longer at bats where a couple of those innings he had a chance to get a quick inning but they were able to work their way on, got some foul balls and worked some longer counts. So it made for a longer day for him. But his stuff was really good. Got a couple of double play balls that helped him. Sign me up for 1 run getting us into the middle of the game.”
Fried struck out the first 2 batters of the game, but Canzone worked a walk before Cal Raleigh Jr. grounded out to end the inning.

And Fried got consecutive groundouts to start the 2nd when he made his only big mistake of the game — a 93-MPH cutter that Weston Wilson hit to the opposite field just over the left field wall. Mariners 1 NY 0. It would be the only run of the game.

Fried worked around consecutive 1-out singles in the 3rd and then in both the 4th and the 5th innings got a double play following a leadoff single.

2. Gilbert Tough
The Yanks hit the balls on the screws against Logan Gilbert in the 1st inning, with Trent Grisham leading off the game with a lineout to 2nd, and Spencer Jones ripping a 2-out lineout to left.
Luis Garcia Jr. almost matched the HR that Fried allowed in the top of the 2nd with one of his own in the bottom of the 2nd — when he hit a drive to opposite field left that just missed going out — it hit off the base of the wall for a double.

But Fried stranded Garcia on 2nd by getting foul out, strike out, and pop out.

The Yanks peppered Gilbert in the 3rd with consecutive 1-out singles by Ali Sanchez and Trent Grisham — but Grisham was thrown out trying to stretch his single into a double. Logan then got Ben Rice to ground out, and the Yanks stranded Sanchez at 3rd.
Luis Garcia Jr. got a 1-out single to left in the 4th — but Logan bared down and got the last 2 outs.
Gilbert pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 5th, and struck out the side in the 6th — surrounding a 1-out walk to Ben Rice. His line: 6 IP, 4 hits, 0 runs, 7 K’s, 1 walk. He wins to got 9-7 3.28.

3. Yank Bullpen Holds Fort
The Yankee bullpen was great.
Yerry de los Santos came in and was impressive — getting 5 straight outs with 3 strikeouts. He used his 96-MPH sinker with an 87-MPH changeup to get the last 2 outs of the 7th — a strike out and groundout, and then pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 7th with 2 strikeouts.
4. Seattle Bullpen Mows NY Down
Eduard Bazardo relieved Gilbert for the 7th — and got the first 2 outs before walking Jose Caballero and Ryan McMahon. Caballero stole 3rd and the Yanks had their chance — but Amed Rosario struck out looking.
Jose Ferrer pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 8th using his 99-MPH sinker almost exclusively.
And Andres Munoz used his 101-MPH fastball to set up his 89-MPH slider and get 3 straight groundouts in the 9th for the old ballgame.
