Yanks Waste Another Amazing Cam Schlittler Start. Atlanta 2 NY 1 in 10

Cam Schlittler had a 2-hit shutout going into 7th, and finished with 7 IP, 3 hits, 1 run, 11 K's and 0 walks.

Cam Schlittler pitched another Gem — 7 innings of 3-hit ball, striking out 11 and walking 0 — and had a 2-hit shutout going until allowing a solo HR to Matt Olson in the 7th — but the performance was wasted as NY lost 2-1 in 10 innings to Atlanta on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.

Schlittler’s performance was nearly matched by Atlanta’s Grant Holmes, who threw 6 shutout innings — getting outs with off-speed stuff and some luck.

Trent Grisham hit a solo HR in the bottom of the 8th to tie the game, but Atlanta scored their inherited runner in the top of the 10th off Paul Blackburn, and the Yankees couldn’t plate theirs.

“That’s baseball,” said Cam Schlittler afterwards. “Happens. And they got a great team; great lineup. It’s been a tough series all weekend. Glad we won the series but it’s tough. It’s just how it goes sometimes.”

“We’ve done a pretty good job up and down of having great at-bats, we’re just not getting results,” said catcher Austin Wells afterwards.

NY drops to 66-52, and fall 5.5 behind Tampa, but stay 1.5 ahead of Boston. Atlanta improves to 71-47, 8.5 ahead of Philly in the NL East.

1. Schlittler with Another Amazing Start

Cam Schlittler was coming off a poor start where he allowed 4 runs in 3 innings on a night that the ball was Flying out of Yankee Stadium in a 12-7 Homerun Derby.

He made up for it — throwing 100-MPH heat all afternoon under the blinding sun — shutting down the Braves with complete dominance.

He had 7 strikeouts through the first 4 innings.

Cam had a 1-hit shutout going thru 6 innings, with 9 K’s and 0 walks. The score: Yankees 0 Braves 0.

2. Holmes Great Too — with Some Luck

Meanwhile Atlanta starter Grant Holmes was great too — dueling Schlittler with a shutout through 6.

Holmes is a 30-year-old, 6’0 righty in his 3rd season in the bigs with Atlanta. He wasn’t getting outs as impressively as Schlittler — but was still getting outs — mostly groundouts — with his 95-MPH heat and off-speed pitches.

And Holmes had some luck.

Ben Rice just missed a HR with a long fly ball to right in the 4th, and next batter Heliot Ramos hit a line drive to almost the same spot — caught.

Spencer Jones walked with 1 out in the bottom of the 5th, and George Lombard Jr. ripped a SHOT that was caught by 1st baseman Matt Olson for a double play.

Austin Wells singled with 1 out in the 6th, and Trent Grisham doubled to right — but the Yankee 3rd base coach held Wells at 3rd even though it looked like he could score.

With 1 out, Ben Rice ripped a SHOT to right — that Ronald Acuna Jr. caught and rifled home, holding Wells at 3rd. Heliot Ramos then struck out and the Yanks didn’t score.

3. Olson HR Puts Atlanta Up 1-0 in 7th

Schlittler was overpowering into the 7th with a 1-hit shutout going — 10 K’s and 0 walks — when Matt Olson got hold of a 2-0, 100-MPH four-seam fastball and it went over the right-centerfield fence for a 1-0 Atlanta game.

Schlittler finished the inning getting a fly out then an infield nubber to 2nd by Ozzie Ablies that Jazz Chisholm Jr. got stuck in his glove — then threw away for an error and runner on 2nd. It should have been the 3rd out but Ablies was credited with a hit.

Schlittler reared back and got a strikeout to end his performance.

He is now 10-6 2.21.

4. Fuentes Tough — But Grisham HR Ties It 1-1 in 8th

It wasn’t looking good for the Yanks, down 1-0 in the bottom of the 8th — as Atlanta rolled out their smoking relievers.

Didier Fuentes — the 21-year-old, 6’0 righty who throws 99-MPH HEAT — had come in with a runner on in the bottom of the 7th, and struck out George Lombard Jr. Fuentes stayed in for the bottom of the 8th and struck out Ryan McMahon and got Austin Wells to fly out.

But Trent Grisham got hold of a first-pitch, 98-MPH fastball and sent it 392 feet to right center for a tie game!

5. Castro & Blackburn Close for Yanks

The Yankee bullpen had been extensively used the prior two games, so Brent Headrick, Tim Hill, and David Bednar were not available.

Instead, the Yanks sent Kervin Castro to the mound for the 8th in the 1-0 game and he did well, getting 3 straight outs (groundout, strikeout, groundout).

Paul Blackburn pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the 9th — groundout, groundout, strikeout of Matt Olson.

6. Atlanta Relievers Tough

After Grisham’s HR, Fuentes struck out Ben Rice to end the 8th, and Atlanta brought in their ace reliever Raisel Iglesias for the 9th. The 36-year-old, 6’2 righthander is the opposite of Fuentes — using a 94-MPH fastball to set up strikeouts with an 89-MPH changeup. He pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 9th with 2 K’s, and we were into extras.

7. Atlanta Plates Inherited Runner; Yanks Don’t

Paul Blackburn stayed in for the top of the 10th, and Harris II singled to start the inning — scoring the inherited runner to give Atlanta a 1-0 lead. Blackburn got a fly out and strike-em-out-throw-em-out double play — Austin Wells with the great throw — to end the inning.

6’4 righty Tyler Kinley pitched the bottom of the 10th for Atlanta, and got Spencer Jones to pop out to start the inning — a key out as the inherited runner did not move to 3rd. Kinley then got George Lombard Jr. to ground out to 3rd, and struck out Ryan McMahon for the old ballgame.
