Chisholm, Jazz Chisholm. NY 4 Detroit 3

Jazz Chisholm Jr. hits 2-run HR in 6th to catapult Yanks into 3-2 lead.

For the 2nd night in a row, the Yankee-Tiger game played out like a Western movie from the 70’s — the night before it was “Valdez Is Coming” and on this night, “Chisholm” starring John Wayne.

But instead of “Chisholm, John Chisholm” as the words to the theme song — it was “Chisholm, Jazz Chisholm Jr.” — who RIPPED a 2-run SHOT to right for a 2-run HR and 3-2 Yankee lead in the 6th, catapulting them to a 4-3 win over the Tigers in Detroit on a Tuesday night.

Two batters after Chisholm, Jose Caballero singled and Austin Wells doubled him home to give NY a 4-2 cushion and that was all that Carlos Rodon and the Yankee bullpen needed.

Fernando Cruz, Brent Headrick, and David Bednar pitched shutout relief — Bednar with a 1-2-3 non-agita save in the 9th.

The HR made a Chisholm a Western Hero — and made up for the night before when he was caught sucking on a lollipop while playing 2nd base in the 5th, which pissed off manager Aaron Boone and half of Yankee Twitter.

“The lollipop kid came through tonight,” said Boone after the game. “He can have all the lollipops he wants now… as long as he doesn’t take it out to second base with him, we’re good.”

1. Rodon Has True Grit

Watching Carlos Rodon pitch in this game was like watching John Wayne singlehandedly take on Robert Duvall and 3 other bad guys near the end of the movie as Maddie Ross says, “That man has True Grit.”

Rodon pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 1st, then walked leftfielder Riley Greene leading off the 2nd — but got a line drive right back at him by Spencer Torkelson, which he nabbed and turned into a double play.

But consecutive 1-out singled by shortstop (and .181 hitter) Zach McKinstry and rightfielder Ben Malgeri in the 3rd, and a wild pitch by Rodon made it 1-0 Detroit. A 2-out single by catcher Dillon Dingler made it 2-0.

Rodon walked Riley Greene leading off the 4th, then got 2 outs — with Greene moving to 2nd. Rodon then got help from his defense — 2nd baseman Hao-Yu Lee singled to left but Cody Bellinger gunned down Greene at the plate for the final out.

Rodon pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 5th, holding the score at 2-1 Detroit.

2. Chisholm, Jazz Chisholm

Starting for Detroit was 29-year-old, 6’3 righthander Casey Mize, who came in with a 2-4 2.58 record and left with a 2-5 2.95 slash line.

Mize has pitched good games against the Yanks in the past and was throwing a shutout in this one until Jazz Chisholm Jr. singled with 1 out in the 4th, moved to 3rd on a single by Spencer Jones, and scored on a groundout by Jose Caballero for a 2-1 game, Detroit leading.

It was still 2-1 — Mize pitching a shutout 5th — when Paul Goldschmidt reached on an infield single with 1 out in the top of the 6th, and Jazz Chisholm Jr. BELTED a high homerun into the night sky in right for a 3-2 Yankee lead.

It was redemption for Jazz — who was caught sucking on a lollipop while playing 2nd base in the 5th inning the night before, which caused the minor stir.

In the dugout — Jazz showed off his whole container of Jolly Ranch lollipops.

“I don’t think it’s a bad look,” said Jazz afterwards. “I’m playing a kid’s game, having fun.”

3. Wells RBI Double the Game Winner

The Yanks weren’t done in the 6th — two batters after Jazz, Jose Caballero singled to left and Austin Wells ripped a double to left for what would become the game-winning RBI hit.

4. Fernando Makes Like Glenn Campbell

Given a 4-2 lead in the 6th, Rodon allowed consecutive doubles to start the inning — by Dillon Dingler and centerfielder Matt Vierling — to make it a 4-3 game.

Rodon got a strikeout for the 1st out, and was relieved.

In came Fernando Cruz — like Glenn Campbell — with the tying run on 2nd and 1 out — and Cruz struck out Spencer Torkelson, walked Kerry Carpenter, and got Colton Keith to ground out to end the threat. Phew.

5. Yank Bullpen Holds ‘Em — with Help from Martian

Brent Headrick pitched the 7th — and got an out before yielding a single to right by Malgeri and then a fly to right by McGonigle that Jasson Dominguez caught on his shoestrings — doubling off Malgeri at 1st.

6. Bednar a 4-Out, Non-Agita Save

With the Yanks clinging to a 4-3 lead, Headrick allowed a leadoff single in the 8th — then got a strikeout and line out.

David Bednar came in for a 4-out save — and got Spencer Torkelson to pop out to end the 8th, and got fly out, ground out, fly out in the 9th for the old ballgame.
