Spencer Jones hits solo HR in the 2nd off Davis Martin, tying the game 1-1.

The Yankees absolutely ripped Davis Martin, knocking him out in the 4th inning with 9 runs on 8 hits en route to a 12-2 shellacking of the White Sox on a beautiful Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium.

Martin came in with a 9-2 2.41 record and left with a 9-3 3.31 record.

The Yankees are currently without Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton, but the top of the lineup continues to bash.

  • Spencer Jones was a big part of the offense, hitting a HR off Martin to tie the game 1-1 in the 2nd, then walking with bases loaded in the 3rd to put NY up 4-1 at the time.
  • Ben Rice pummeled a 2-run HR in the 3rd — his 20th of the season.
  • Cody Bellinger went 3-4 on the night with 2 RBI’s and 2 runs scored.
  • Jose Caballero went 2-4 with a HR and 2 RBI’s.
  • Anthony Volpe went 3-5 to raise his average to .237 (.333 OBP).
  • Paul Goldschmidt went 2-5 including a 2-run HR that made it a 9-1 game in the 4th and knocked Martin out of the game.

On the mound enjoying all that support was Gerrit Cole, who turned in a masterful performance: 6 IP, 3 hits, 2 runs, 6 K’s, 2 walks. He got the win to go 2-1 2.57. Ryan Yarbrough pitched 3 shutout innings of relief.

“Woo. Obviously it’s a really good pitcher having a great year,” said manager Aaron Boone about Davis Martin. “Everyone put together really good at bats against him. I thought we did a good job of laying off some of the pitches he wants you to chase, and we were able to slug some too. Great at bat by Jonesy to get us going and they took from there and started to put the pressure on. We got a couple of breaks — they gave us a baserunner or two and guys were able to take advantage of it.”

NY improves to 44-27, and increases its lead in the AL East to 2.5 games over Tampa. Chicago falls to 38-33, in a tie for 1st with Cleveland in the AL West.

1. Spencer Ties Game w HR

Davis Martin is a 29-year-old, 6’2 righty who uses deception, guile, and a 6-pitch arsenal that includes a 94-MPH four-seam fastball, 93-MPH sinker, a high-80’s slider, a changeup, a cutter, and a curveball to get people out.

He is having his best year by far — having gone 7-10 4.10 last year and 0-5 4.32 the year before.

Martin retired the first 4 batters of the game — 2 on strikeouts — and it looked like we were in for a pitchers’ duel between him and Cole.

But the #5 batter for NY was Spencer Jones — and he BLASTED a 3-1 pitch to right for a 1-1 tie in the 2nd.

“Really good at bats,” said Boone about Spencer Jones. “On base 3 times. He looked real comfortable against a really good pitcher. You see what happens when he impacts the ball. That was pummeled to right.”

2. Yanks Pummel Martin in 3rd and 4th to Take 9-1 Lead

The Yanks continued to pressure Martin in the bottom of the 3rd — J.C. Escarra leading off with a double, Anthony Volpe getting on with an infield single, and Ben Rice walking to load the bases — before Cody Bellinger singled to right for 2 runs and a 3-1 Yankee lead.

Martin got a strikeout but Jazz Chisholm Jr. worked a walk to load the bases again, and Spencer Jones worked a 3-2 walk for a 4-1 Yankee lead.

Jose Caballero then hit a sac fly to center to make it 5-1 NY.

And then came the 4th inning when NY sent Martin to the showers.

J.C. Escarra led off with a single and Ben Rice RIPPED the ball 371 feet to right for a 7-1 NY lead.

Cody Bellinger singled and Paul Goldschmidt hit a 390 foot bomb to left for a 9-1 NY lead and it was good night Davis Martin.

3. Yanks Make It 11-1 Off ChiSox Pen in 4th

The White Sox brought in 6’1 lefty Chris Murphy, and the Yanks continued to pummel — Jazz Chisholm Jr. singling to right, Spencer Jones working his 2nd walk of the game, and Ryan McMahon ripping a 2-out single to right for a 10-1 game.

J.C. Escarra then grounded the ball back to the pitcher, who threw the ball away trying to get him out at 1st, scoring Spencer Jones to make it 11-1 NY.

4. Cole Cruises

Meanwhile Gerrit Cole allowed a solo HR to former Yank Andrew Benintendi in the 1st to make it 1-0 White Sox, but cruised after that with a shutout 2nd thru 5th inning.

He allowed a leadoff single, a couple of walks, and an infield single with 2 outs in the 6th for an 11-2 game, but got a groundout to end his night with 6 innings of 3-hit ball.

“He did a really good job of setting the tone tonite and being aggressive against a good hitting club with some power that can hurt you,” said Boone about Cole.

5. Caballero HR Makes It 12-2 in 8th

The White Sox trotted out 5’7 infielder Luisangel Acuna to pitch the bottom of the 8th. He was throwing 43-MPH pitches over the plate. Jose Caballero got hold of one and put it into the seats in left for a 12-2 Yankee lead.

6. Yarbrough Throws 3 Shutout Innings

Ryan Yarbrough looked good — pitching the 7th through the 9th innings — 3 innings of 1-hit ball for the old ballgame.
