Schlittler Holds ‘Em While Martian & Goldy HR’s Vault Yanks. NY 3 Toronto 1

Paul Goldschmidt 2-run HR in 9th puts NY ahead 3-1.

Paul Goldschmidt hit a 2-run HR in the 9th to break a 1-1 tie and vault the Yanks to a 3-1 win over Toronto on a Saturday afternoon at Rogers Center.

The game had been a pitchers’ duel between Cam Schlittler and Kevin Gausman — Schlittler with 7 innings of 6-hit, 1-run ball matching Gausman who threw 7 innings of 1-hit, 1-run ball. The only run off Gausman came on a HR by Jasson Dominguez in the 4th that tied the game 1-1 at the time.

Fernando Cruz got in and out of a sticky situation in the bottom of the 8th — walking the bases loaded with 2 outs before getting the final out.

“Just a huge at bat there by Goldy,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards. “Looks like he got a hanging breaking ball and he got every bit of it.”

“He grinded his way through 7,” said Boone about Schlittler. “He’s got the equipment to get anyone out. And you feel good that as long as he continues to make pitches he’s got the ability to get himself out because of his stuff. And first and foremost he’s a strike thrower so even though he had a couple of walks today, you feel like he can right that ship at any time. He made some big pitches today, got out of some big jams all the way to the end.”

NY improves to 42-27 and moves into 1st in the AL East by 1 game ahead of Tampa, which lost. Toronto falls to 34-37.

1. Schlittler Not Perfect But Throws 7 Innings of 1-Run Ball

Cam Schlittler wasn’t perfect, but worked out of any trouble he ran into to pitch 7 innings of 6-hit, 1-run ball. He allowed baserunners in every inning but 1 — and got some timely doubleplays to get out of jams. Cam:

  • Threw a 1-2-3 inning in the 1st.
  • Allowed a 1-out single, 2-out walk, and infield single in the 2nd before getting a groundout to end the threat.
  • Allowed a 352-foot HR to left by Kazuma Okamoto for a 1-0 Toronto lead in the 3rd.
  • Allowed a walk and a double in the 4th to put runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out — but got a line out to Jazz Chisholm Jr. at 2nd, and a strike out to end the inning.

  • Walked the first 2 batters of the 5th, but got a double play and strikeout to end the inning.
  • Allowed a 1-out single in the 6th, but then got a double play to end the inning.
  • Allowed a 1-out single in the 7th but got a groundout and strikeout to end the inning.

2. Gausman Great in Pitchers’ Duel

Meanwhile Kevin Gausman mowed through the Yankee lineup with great efficiency, getting 1-2-3 inning after 1-2-3 inning.

3. The Martian Ties It with HR in 4th

Gausman allowed just 1 hit — a solo HR by Jasson Dominguez in the top of the 4th to tie the game 1-1. The Martian had just arrived from the minors where he had just finished rehab after a concussion catching a fly ball for the Yanks 3 weeks ago.

4. Cruz In & Out of Trouble in 8th

Fernando Cruz relieved Schlittler for the 8th, and immediately walked the first 2 batters. But he reared back and got 2nd baseman Ernie Clement to pop out to 1st, then struck out catcher Brandon Valenzuela.

With 2 outs, he walked leftfielder Yohendrick Pinango to load the bases.

But Cruz got 1st baseman Charles McAdoo to foul out to 1st to end the threat.

5. Goldy 2-Run HR in 9th Puts Yanks Ahead 3-1

Louis Varland took the hill for Toronto in the 9th. Cody Bellinger greeted him with a single, and next batter Paul Goldschmidt hit a 400-foot HR to left for a 3-1 Yankee lead.

6. Bednar K’s Side in 9th

David Bednar came in for the save — and simply struck out the side for the old ballgame.
