At Least the Yanks Got to Yesavage. Toronto 8 NY 5

Cody Bellinger 2-run HR in 5th off Trey Yesavage makes it 5-3 Toronto.

Ryan Weathers had good stuff but coughed up two 2-run HR’s to put the Yanks in a 5-0 hole, and just when they pulled back within 5-3, Jake Bird buried them some more for an 8-5 loss on a beautiful Friday night in Toronto.

At least the Yanks got to Trey Yesavage — the young Blue Jay ace who was so problematic for them late last season and in the playoffs. NY scored 5 runs in 5 innings against Yesavage — gaining 10 baserunners on 6 walks and 4 hits — although Yesavage got the win to go 3-3 3.78 on the season.

Cody Bellinger hit a 2-out, 2-run HR against Yesavage in the 5th to make it a 5-3 game, and NY sent Yesavage to the showers by putting runners on 2nd and 3rd with nobody out in the 6th off a Spencer Jones walk and Jose Caballero double — runners that would come around to score against reliever Mason Fluharty, both charged to Yesavage.

“Some 2 strike mistakes,” said manager Aaron Boone about Weathers. “Stuffs good; he’s throwing well. Unfortunately some of his mistakes have left the ballpark.”

“I thought we had good at bats all night against him,” said Boone about Yesavage.

NY drops to 41-27, still in a virtual tie for 1st in the AL East with Tampa, which also lost. Toronto improves to 34-36, 8 games back.

1. Weathers Coughs Up 2 Homerun Balls

Ryan Weathers put the Yanks in a 3-0 hole in the bottom of the 1st, allowing a 1-out infield single to Ernie Clement, and then a 2-out RBI double to Alejandro Kirk, and a 2-out, 2-strike, 2-run HR to 3rd baseman Kazuma Okamoto. Toronto 3 NY 0.

Weathers got the first 2 outs of the 2nd, but hit shortstop Andres Gimenez with a pitched and coughed up a 2-out, 2-strike, 2-run HR to George Springer. Toronto 5 NY 0.

Weathers settled down after that, pitching a shutout 3rd and a 1-2-3 shutout 4th inning.

2. Yanks Get 10 Baserunners and 5 Runs off Yesavage

Meanwhile NY pressured Yesavage. He pitched around a 2-out walk to Ben Rice in the 1st, but in the 2nd the Yanks loaded the bases on him with 1 out on a leadoff single by Trent Grisham and consecutive 2-out walks by Jose Caballero and Ryan McMahon.

But Yesavage reared back and struck out J.C. Escarra, then got Trent Grisham to pop out to leave the bases loaded.

Yesavage pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 3rd, and allowed only a 2-out walk in the 4th — but in the 5th, Escarra led off with a double, Ben Rice worked a 1-out walk, and Paul Goldschmidt hit a sac fly for a 5-1 game.

Next batter Cody Bellinger hit a 350-foot HR to right and NY was back in it a 5-3.

3. Bird Buries Yank Comeback

But Ryan Weathers walked George Springer leading off the 5th, and after getting a groundout that moved the runner, was relieved by Jake Bird.

Bird immediately buried the Yankees — allowing an RBI double to Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and an RBI single to Kirk for a 7-3 game.

4. Grisham 2-RBI Single Makes It 7-5 — But Leaves with Hamstring Issue

The Yanks came right back against Yesavage in the top of the 6th — Spencer Jones working a leadoff walk, and Jose Caballero lining a double to left, putting runners on 2nd and 3rd with nobody out.

Toronto brought in reliever Mason Fluharty, and he got Amed Rosario to groundout but Trent Grisham got a Clutch, 2-out, 2-RBI single to center to make it 7-5 Toronto. Unfortunately Grisham felt tightness in his hamstring running to 1st and was removed from the game.

Next batter Ben Rice hit a shot to right that was caught at the wall.

5. Yanks Load Bases with 2 Outs in 7th — But Can’t Score

Down 7-5, the Yanks loaded the bases with 2 outs in the 7th off Braydon Fisher — Goldschmidt with a leadoff single, Jazz Chisholm Jr. with a 1-out walk, and Jose Caballero with a 2-out infield single.

But Ryan McMahon flied out to center, just before the warning track.

6. Headrick & Doval Pitch Well; Cruz Allows a Run

Brent Headrick relieved Bird with 1 out in the 6th and allowed a 2-out single and walk before getting the final out.

Camilo Doval worked around a 1-out walk and 2 out single to pitch a shutout 7th.

Fernando Cruz allowed a run in the 8th on an Ernie Clement double into the corner in right that Max Schuemann had trouble fielding.

7. Toronto Closers Close Out Yanks

And that was it for the Yanks as the Toronto setup man Tyler Rogers came in to pitch a 1-2-3 shutout 8th, and Louis Varland pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 9th — strikeout, groundout, strikeout — for the old ballgame.

Etcetera

It was expected that the Yanks would call up Jasson Dominguez after the game, with Trent Grisham probably headed to the IL with the slight hamstring pull. The Martian was expected to be rejoining the team after the weekend, with his recuperation from a concussion completed.

Spencer Jones went 0-2 with 2 walks in the game — he continues to look good.
