Yanks Back Rodon with Machine-Gun Attack. NY 8 Cleveland 4

Trent Grisham with triple in 6th.

The Yankee lineup machine-gunned 11 hits and 8 runs to back another quality start by Carlos Rodon for an 8-4 win over the Guardians on a humid Wednesday afternoon in Cleveland.

The Yankee attack featured lots of singles, 2 doubles, and 2 triples.

  • NY jumped on top 2-1 in the 2nd on a 2-RBI triple by Jazz Chisholm Jr. off Cleveland’s young lefty Parker Messick.
  • Trent Grisham tripled in the 6th, and Jose Caballero brought him home with a sac fly to give NY a 4-3 lead.
  • Anthony Volpe then doubled in Chisholm who had walked to make it 5-3. Paul Goldschmidt then singled Volpe home to make it 6-3.
  • Cody Bellinger doubled in the 7th, and came around on a single by Caballero to make it 7-3 NY. Chisholm then grounded out to score a run and make it 8-3 NY.

Brent Headrick and Ryan Yarbrough pitched the final 3 innings for NY, Yarbrough allowing a run in the 9th for the final score.

Rodon provided a quality start — 6 IP, 4 hits, 3 runs, 7 K’s, and 3 walks. He wins to go 2-2 3.19.

“Really good offensive day for us,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards. “A lot of little things done well. Some big hits; big at bats. Carlos (Rodon) just what we needed, on a hot day too — giving us 6 strong innings — kind of set us up for success. Yarbrough finishing it up with 2 strong. Just a really outstanding series against a team that is really good there in the Guardians.”

NY sweeps the 3-game series and improves to 41-26, still in a virtual 1st place tie with Tampa, behind by percentage points (.615 to .612), which also won. Cleveland falls to 37-33, in a 1st-place with the ChiSox in the AL Central — pct pts behind Chicago.

1. Rodon Glitches in 4th But Throws Quality Start

Rodon pitched well — except for the 1st and 4th innings.

He allowed a solo HR to Angel Martinez leading off the bottom of the 1st, then allowed a 2-out walk and single before getting out of the inning.

Rodon then cruised through the 2nd and 3rd — striking out the side in the 3rd.

But Rodon glitched again in the 4th — coughing up a 3-1 lead by walking the first 2 batters of the inning, then allowing a 1-out RBI double to catcher Austin Hedges, and a sac fly by shortstop Brayan Rocchio that tied the score.

After that, Rodon cruised some more — finishing strong with a 1-2-3 inning in the 5th and 6th to walk away with the win.

2. Chisholm 2-RBI Triple & Score Puts Yanks Up 3-1 in 2nd

The Yanks meanwhile were facing Parker Messick, a 26-year-old lefty known as a pitch-to-contact pitcher who uses a 93-MPH fastball, 84-MPH changeup, mid-80’s slider, and mid-70’s curveball to get guys out.

Messick pitched a shutout 1st but the Yanks contacted him in the 2nd — a leadoff single by Trent Grisham, a bunt single by Jose Caballero, and a 2-RBI triple by Jazz Chisholm Jr. put NY up 2-1.

Anthony Volpe then reached on an error by 2nd baseman Trevor Bazzana, as Chisholm scored.

3. Yanks Machine-Gun 3 Runs in 6th to Go Up 6-3

Messick settled down to pitch shutout ball in the 3rd thru 5th innings — retiring 9 in a row after getting the first out of the 6th.

But Trent Grisham tripled to right, and Jose Caballero hit a sac fly to left to score him — Grisham making a tremendous slide home to avoid the tag and make it 4-3 Yanks.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. then walked and Messick was yanked in favor of Matt Festa, a 33-year-old, 6’1 righty from Brooklyn.

The Yanks feasted off Festa — Anthony Volpe greeted him with an RBI double to left and it was 5-3 Yanks.

Next batter Angel Sanchez — the new Yankee right-handed hitting platoon catcher — walked, and Paul Goldschmidt ripped an RBI single to right for a 6-3 Yankee lead.

4. Yanks Make It 8-3 in 7th

Codi Heuer — a 29-year-old, 6’5 righty from Missoula, Montana — came in for the 7th, and Cody Bellinger from California greeted him with a double to left. Heuer struck out Ryan McMahon but walked Trent Grisham.

Bellinger and Grisham then executed a double steal to put runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out, and Jose Caballero singled to right to score Bellinger and make it 7-3.

Next batter Chisholm grounded out to make it 8-3 NY.

5. Headrick and Yarbrough Close it

Brent Headrick pitched a shutout 7th, allowing just a 2-out single.

Ryan Yarbrough pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 8th, sending the game to the 9th with NY up 8-3.

Yarbrough walked 3rd baseman Daniel Schneemann leading off the 9th, then allowed a 1-out RBI double to Austin Hedges to make it 8-4, but got groundout and line out for the old ballgame.
