Cody Bellinger singled in 2 runs in the top of the 10th to put the Yanks ahead 7-5 and David Bednar shut out the Guardians in the bottom of the inning for a come-from-behind win in Cleveland on a Monday night.
Most NY’ers were engrossed watching Game 3 of the Knicks-Spurs NBA Finals and missed watching the Yankee game.
The baseball game featured a premier pitching matchup — Cleveland’s young ace Gavin Williams, who came in at 9-3 3.20, and NY’s Will Warren, who came in at 7-1 3.22. Neither got a decision, Williams’ ERA going to 3.28 and Warren’s to 3.28 as well.
The game went back and forth — the Yankee lineup making do without Aaron Judge for 4-6 weeks — as Paul Goldschmidt, Trent Grisham, Ben Rice, Cody Bellinger, Jazz Chisholm Jr., rookie Spencer Jones, and even Ryan McMahon stinging the Guardians.
- NY had an early 3-0 lead in the game thanks to Paul Goldschmidt, who hit a 2-run HR in the 1st and Bellinger, who drove in a run with a groundout in the 3rd.
- Will Warren coughed up the lead with a rough 3rd inning, but settled back down to pitch a 1-2-3 inning in the 4th before being lifted with 1 out in the 5th and his pitch count at 91.
- Ryan McMahon put the Yanks back on top 4-3 with a solo HR in the 5th, but Paul Blackburn gave the lead back, coughing up a 2-run HR to Angel Martinez in the 6th.
- Goldschmidt tied the game 5-5 in the 8th with a groundout scoring a run after Trent Grisham and Ben Rice had singled before him.
“I thought he was alright,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards about Warren. “You run 9 lefties at him it’s a tough go. Had a couple of leadoff walks, but was throwing the ball well.”
NY improves to 39-26, and stay in a virtual tie for 1st place with Tampa, the Rays percentage pts ahead (.603 to .600). Cleveland falls to 37-31, in 1st in the Central by 1.5 games over the ChiSox.
1. Goldy HR Off Williams Puts Yanks Up 2-0 in 1st
Gavin Williams — a 26-year-old, 6’6 righty — throws 100-MPH heat and a nasty 86-MPH curveball. He struck out Trent Grisham on 3 pitches to start the game, but Ben Rice worked a walk, and Paul Goldschmidt hit a 2-run HR to give NY a 2-0 lead.

But NY got to him again in the 3rd — leadoff singles by Trent Grisham and Ben Rice, and an RBI groundout by Paul Goldschmidt to make it 3-0 Yanks.
3. Warren Good But Coughs Up Lead in 3rd; Finishes Strong
Will Warren looked sharp early, striking out the side in the 1st and pitching a shutout 2nd, allowing a leadoff walk then getting a double play.

But Warren ran into trouble in the 3rd — a leadoff walk to Steven Kwan and double by Patrick Bailey put runners on 2nd and 3rd with nobody out.
Warren then threw a wild pitch to score Kwan, before getting a groundout that scored Bailey to make it a 3-2 Yankee lead.
Warren got a 2nd out — but consecutive 2-out singles by Ramirez and Chase DeLauter put runners on 1st and 3rd, and a error by Jose Caballero on what should have been the 3rd out tied the score 3-3.
Warren rebounded with a 1-2-3 shutout 4th, and after hitting a batter leading off the 5th, got a strikeout and was relieved at 92 pitches.
4. McMahon HR Puts NY Up 4-3 in 5th
Gavin Williams pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 4th, but again the Yanks clipped him in the 5th — Ryan McMahon with a solo HR to left for a 4-3 Yankee lead.

5. Martinez HR Puts Cleveland Up 5-4 in 6th
Brent Headrick got the last out of the 5th, but walked the leadoff batter in the 6th. Paul Blackburn came in and coughed up a 2-run HR to Angel Martinez and it was 5-4 Cleveland.

6. Trent, Rice & Goldy Tie Game in 8th
Trent Grisham and Ben Rice hit consecutive singles to lead off the 8th against Hunter Gaddis, and Paul Goldschmidt hit a groundout to 2nd to score the run and tie the game 5-5.
7. Yarbrough, Bird, & Hill Keep Guardians at Bay
Ryan Yarbrough and Jake Bird combined to pitch shutout ball in the 6th and 7th.
Camilo Doval got an out but then allowed consecutive singles in the 8th, and was relieved by Tim Hill who got a pop out and fly out to end the thread — PHEW.
Hill stayed in to get the 1st out of the bottom of the 9th, and David Bednar came in to get the last 2 outs — both on strikeouts.
8. Bellinger 2-RBI Single Puts NY Ahead in 10th
And so it was to the top of the 10th — with new Yankee catcher Angel Sanchez on 2nd as the inherited runner and Shawn Armstrong pitching for Cleveland. He got Trent Grisham to fly out to shallow left to begin the inning, then intentionally walked Ben Rice.
Max Schuemann worked a walk to load the bases, and Cody Bellinger singled past shortstop for a 7-5 Yankee lead!

9. Bednar the Save
David Bednar stayed in for the save — and with the inherited runner on 2nd, walked Angel Martinez to start the inning, but got a lineout by Kwan to Anthony Volpe at shortstop, strikeout of Bailey, and groundout of Brayan Rocchio for the old ballgame.
