Cam Schlittler with Another Gem. Yankees 5 Mets 2

Cam Schlittler strikes out Juan Soto. Schlittler pitched a 1-hit shutout into the 7th inning to go 6-1 1.35 on the year.

Cam Schlittler pitched a 1-hit shutout into the 7th inning, struck out 9, and won to go 6-1 1.35 on the season in beating the Mets 5-2 on a beautiful (60-degree) Friday night at Citifield.

Schlittler is currently the leading candidate for Cy Young in the American League — he leads the league in wins and ERA.

He allowed a solo HR to Juan Soto in the 7th, but finished with 6.2 IP, 2 hits, 1 run, 9 K’s, and 2 walks.

Meanwhile — not so good news for the Mets as young Yank slugger Spencer Jones ripped a 111-MPH liner that hit their starter (and former Yank) Clay Holmes in the leg — breaking his fibula. Holmes will be out for “a long time” said Mets coach Carlos Mendoza afterwards.

Spencer Jones hit Holmes with the line drive leading off the top of the 4th. Holmes stayed in for the rest of the 4th, but left after getting an out and walking a batter in the 5th, the Yanks leading 3-0 at the time.

The Yanks got 3 runs off Holmes in the 3rd with 4 straight 2-out hits — a single by Ben Rice, a single by Aaron Judge, an RBI double by Cody Bellinger, and a 2-RBI double by Jazz Chisholm Jr.

Spencer Jones had 2 hits on the evening; he singled in a run off Austin Warren in the 5th, charged to Holmes.

Ben Rice added an insurance HR in the top of the 9th.

“I didn’t know that,” said Spencer Jones afterwards when told Holmes broke his fibula on the line drive. “That’s the first I’ve heard of that. I’m sorry. He’s a friend of mine; we work out in Nashville together. That’s tough to hear.”

“Par for the course,” said manager Aaron Boone about Schlittler’s first performance in the Subway Series. “He’s really good. He’s throwing the ball incredibly well; filling up the strike zone. Nine more strikeouts and didn’t quite finish off the 7th inning but another just in-command, in-control of the start.”

Both teams were wearing Green hats and camouflage socks to honor Armed Forces day.

The Yanks improve to 28-17, in 2nd place, 2 games behind Tampa in the AL East. The Mets drop to 18-26, in last place, 12.5 games behind Atlanta in the NL East.

1. Schlittler Spectacular

Cam Schlittler is fun to watch, with his easy-motion, highly-accurate, 98-100 MPH four-seam fastball that moves, his 97-MPH sinker, his 93-MPH cutter, And his very occasional 91-MPH slider.

And then there’s his 85-MPH curveball, which he didn’t unleash in this game until the 4th inning — when he caught Juan Soto off guard with hit — throwing it for 2 strikes before striking out Soto with a cutter.

By the 5th, Schlittler’s curveball was in ‘full swing’, and along with his 98-1oo MPH heat — he struck out the side. He allowed a single to Brett Baty in the 2nd and a walk to Marcus Semien in the 5th — everything else was an out — including a 1-2-3 inning in the 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 6th.

Schlittler helped himself with cat-like defense, pouncing on a slow roller down 3rd by Mark Vientos in the 4th and throwing him out.

2. Yanks Get to Holmes in 3rd

Clay Holmes has been the best Mets starter this season — coming in with a 4-3 1.86 record. The former Yank and converted Ace reliever went 12-8 3.53 for the Mets last year.

The Yanks got to him with 2 outs in the top of the 3rd on consecutive singles by Ben Rice and Aaron Judge, and an RBI double by Cody Bellinger for a 1-0 lead.

Jazz Chisholm’s Big Night Wearing Big G’s Pants

Jazz Chisholm Jr. — wearing Giancarlo Stanton‘s pants — ripped a double to right for 2 runs and a 3-0 ballgame.

Chisholm was wearing Big G’s pants as a lucky charm to try and continue to break out of his recent batting slump. He wore Trent Grisham‘s baggy pants to honor Jackie Robinson in the Yank’s prior game on Wednesday, and went 1-3 with an RBI. Afterwards he said that the loose fit and good mojo seemed to spark his hitting, jokingly calling himself “a little stitious.”

In this game he went 3-for-4 with 2 RBI’s.

3. Jones Clobbers Holmes with Line Drive in 4th

Holmes struck out Ryan McMahon for the final out of the 3rd, but Spencer Jones led off the 4th with a 111.1-MPH line drive that hit Holmes in the leg. Jones was safe via an infield single.

Holmes stayed in the game — not knowing his fibula was broken — and walked Anthony Volpe. (Volpe would walk 3 times on the day.)

But Holmes rebounded — striking out Austin Wells and Trent Grisham, before allowing an infield single to Ben Rice to load the bases with 2 outs. He then got Aaron Judge to fly out to right — getting out of the jam.

4. Jones Knocks in Run in 5th

Holmes struck out Cody Bellinger leading off the 5th but walked Jazz Chisholm Jr. — still clearly affected by the injury — and was relieved by Austin Warren.

Mets fan Mike Daddino saw it this way:

An out later, Spencer Jones ripped an RBI single to center for a 4-0 Yankee lead.

 5. Soto Solo HR in 7th Makes It 4-1 Yanks

Schlittler struck out Juan Soto in the 1st and the 4th, but in the 7th, Juan Soto got to him with a solo HR to left for a 4-1 game.

6. Cruz Holds It

Schlittler got the next 2 outs after Soto’s HR — but walked Brett Baty and was relieved by Fernando Cruz, who allowed an infield single but got a fly out to end the inning.

McMahon Defense

Cruz pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 8th — helped by Ryan McMahon‘s defense at 3rd base.

7. Rice Insurance HR in 9th

Ben Rice added an insurance HR in the top of the 9th to make it 5-1 Yankees.

8. Bednar Saves It

David Bednar came into the 5-1 game in the 9th, and walked Juan Soto to lead off, but got Vientos to hit into a double play.

With 2 outs, Bednar allowed consecutive singles for a run (RBI Brett Baty) — but got Marcus Semien to line out for the old ballgame.
