Max Fried Leaves Early with Elbow Tightness. Baltimore 7 NY 0

Jazz Chisholm Jr. doubles in the 5th -- the only Yankee hit of the game.

Not a great afternoon for the Yankees as Ace Max Fried had to leave after 3 innings with tightness in his throwing elbow. He didn’t quite have it from the start, allowing 3 runs in 3 innings as NY went down in flames 7-0 on a Wednesday afternoon in Baltimore.

NY got 1 hit — a double by Jazz Chisholm Jr. in the 5th as Kyle Bradish pitched a gem — 6 shutout innings of 1-hit ball, striking out 7 and walking 3. The Baltimore bullpen did the rest.

Paul Blackburn relieved Fried for the 4th and wasn’t bad — allowing a 2-run HR to Adley Rutschman in the 5th and walking the leadoff batter in the 6th, which came around to score when Ryan Yarbrough allowed 3 straight singles to make it 7-0. Yarbrough settled down to pitch a shutout 7th and 8th.

The only good news — Fried didn’t think it was that bad afterwards — although he will undergo imaging immediately.

“It’s hard to completely explain… it’s just kind of whether it’s hyperextended or banged — kind of the back elbow/tricep area,” said Fried afterwards. “Just a little uncomfortable/tight especially in between innings its hard for me to warm up. First hitter of the inning it would be like 88, 90, 91 and by the 4th, 5th hitter, 20 pitches in I’m able to loosen up. Just wasn’t sharp.”

“I guess you never know,” added Fried. “But I’m definitely planning on this thing being a sooner rather than later. Don’t want to put any timelines on it, we’ll find out tomorrow. I’m not too worried about a super long-term thing. If I can I’d love to be able to make my next start but we’ll see.”

NY falls to 27-17 and remain 2 behind Tampa in the AL East. Baltimore improves to 20-24.

1. Fried Not Himself from the Start

It looked like a normal start for Max Fried the first 2 innings:

But in the 3rd, he allowed a leadoff bunt single by Blaze Alexander, walked Taylor Ward, then got a ground out but allowed a sac fly to Rutschman for a 2-0 Baltimore lead.

Pete Alonso singled in a run — but was thrown out trying to get to 2nd to end the inning. Baltimore 3 NY 0.

And that would be it for Fried — he was taken out of the game after conversation in the dugout.

2. Bradish Cooks Yanks

Kyle Bradish is a 29-year-old, 6’3 righty in his 5th season with the O’s — the team he came up with. He spent the last 2 years recovering from Tommy John surgery he underwent in 2024. In 2023, he went 12-7 2.83 in his first full year and was considered one of the best young pitchers in the AL.

Trent Grisham led the game off with a walk, but then Bradish retired 13 in a row, pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. His fastball had life, and his curveball was devastating.

“Not a good day for us,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards. “Bradish threw the ball well. His heater was playing a little more, and then the breaking ball — from the side, his curveball looked good — it looked like it was going forward for a long time then Bite pretty good.”

The Yanks Mounted their One Rally in the 5th

Jazz Chisholm Jr. broke up the no hitter with a 1-out double in the 5th, and got to 3rd on a wild pitch — the score 3-0 Baltimore at the time. But Bradish struck out Ryan McMahon for the 2nd out. Spencer Jones worked a walk to put 1st and 3rd with 2 outs — but Bradish struck out Anthony Volpe for the final out.

By the 6th Bradish had a 5-0 lead. He got the first 2 outs of that inning, walked Ben Rice, then got Aaron Judge to popout to end his outing. He improves to 2-5 4.21.

3. Blackburn Pitches 2 Innings

Paul Blackburn pitched a shutout 4th, but in the 5th allowed a leadoff single to Blaze Alexander and a 2-out, 2-run HR by Adley Rutschman and it was 5-0 Baltimore.

Blackburn walked Tyler O’Neill to lead off the 6th and was relieved by Ryan Yarbrough. That runner would come around to score — charged to Blackburn.

4. Yarbrough Pitches 3 Innings

Yarbrough came in with the runner on 1st, and struck out Leody Taveras but then allowed 3 consecutive singles — the 3rd one by Blaze Alexander to knock in 2 runs for a 7-0 game.

After that Yarbrough settled down and pitched a shutout 7th and 8th.

5. Baltimore Pen Shuts Yanks Out for Final 3

Keegan Akin came in to pitch a 1-2-3 inning in the 7th for Baltimore.

DL Ennis walked Spencer Jones (his 2nd walk of the day) to lead off the 8th, but then got pop out and double play (by J.C. Escarra).

And in the 9th, Yannier Cano walked Trent Grisham (his 2nd walk of the day) but then got 3 straight groundouts for the old ballgame.
