Luke Weaver came into the 7th inning with the bases loaded and nobody out with the Mets nursing a 5-3 lead, and got strikeout, strikeout, groundout to end the threat and propel the Mets to a 6-3 win on a beautiful (75-degree) Saturday night at a Citifield.
Weaver also pitched a shutout 8th inning, then former Yank Devin Williams pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 9th to close it.
Carlos Rodon started for the Yanks, and again looked great until imploding in the 3rd inning — striking out the first 2 batters of the inning but then allowing a double, walk, walk, wild pitch and throwing error (on one play) for 2 runs. Rodon pitched into the 4th — again getting the first 2 outs but a walk and RBI double sent him to the showers.
Weaver also picked up his teammate — rightfielder Carson Benge — who partly created the bases-loaded, nobody out situation in the 7th by dropping an easy fly ball to right early in the inning, allowing Aaron Judge — who had led off with a double — to score, making it a 5-3 game.
Afterwards, Weaver said he told current Met and former Yank teammate Clay Holmes — who was hit on the leg by a line drive that broke his fibula the night before by Spencer Jones — that he dedicated the appearance to him.
“I just was like, ‘that was in honor of you. I even had your name written in my hat.’ Which I didn’t, but it just felt right to say. Kids, don’t lie to your parents,” said Weaver afterwards.
The Yankees fall to 28-18, and remain 2 games back of Tampa in the AL East. The Mets improve to 19-26.
1. Mets Start Brazoban; Switch to Peterson
The Mets opened with Huascar Brazoban, the 36-year-old, 6’3 righthander — and he pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 1st inning, and got the 1st out of the 2nd — striking out righty Paul Goldschmidt — before the Mets replaced him with David Peterson, their 6’6 lefty.
Peterson was the erstwhile starter — the Mets using Brazoban so Peterson wouldn’t have to face the top of the Yankee lineup 3 times. The Yanks knew the Mets were doing this — so loaded their lineup with righty batters — with Amed Rosario at 3rd and Paul Goldschmidt at 1st.
But the plan backfired a bit when lefty Jazz Chisholm Jr. ripped a double to right off lefty Peterson, and a batter later, lefty Trent Grisham singled in Chisholm for a 1-0 Yankee lead.

2. Rodon Great Early; Implodes with 2 Outs
Meanwhile Carlos Rodon looked great early — as he had in his first start of the season a week ago. He pitched a shutout 1st and 2nd, and struck out the first 2 batters of the 3rd when Carson Benge worked a long count on him, then ripped an 86-MPH slider for a double to right.
Rodon then walked Bo Bichette and walked Juan Soto and threw a wild pitch that bounced off the wall behind home plate and ricocheted back to Rodon who tried to throw home but threw it away, allowing a 2nd run to score.

Mets 2 Yankees 1.
Rodon got the last out of the 3rd and pitched into the 4th — again getting the first 2 outs on a strikeout and groundout — but then losing the zone — walking Austin Slater and allowing an RBI double to Brett Baty for a 3-1 Mets lead.
Jake Bird relieved Rodon and got the final out of the inning, striking out Luis Torrens.
“You’re seeing a lot of the things that are encouraging,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards. “He’s getting the swing and miss; the fastball is in a good place; but then just loses the zone for a minute. So we have to got to dial in the fastball command. I feel like his slider and changeup are getting some swing and miss.”
“Simple stuff, just have to attack the zone better,” said Rodon afterwards.
3. Goldy Clutch RBI Single in 5th Cuts Mets Lead to 3-2
David Peterson settled down after the Grisham RBI single in the 2nd, and was in command — striking out everyone in site until he lost the zone in the 5th.
After striking out Austin Wells to start the inning, Peterson hit Ben Rice with a pitch and walked Aaron Judge. Cody Bellinger grounded out — but with 2 outs, righty Paul Goldschmidt ripped an RBI single to right for a 3-2 game, Mets lead.

4. Bird & Headrick Pitch Middle Innings
After getting the final out of the 4th, Greg Bird allowed a leadoff single to Carson Benge in the 5th, then got Bo Bichette to pop out and was relieved by big 6’6 lefty Brent Headrick.
But Headrick walked lefty Juan Soto and allowed an RBI double to Mark Vientos for a 5-2 Mets lead.
After that Headrick settled down to get the final 2 outs of the 5th, and pitch a 1-2-3 shutout 6th, striking out the last 2 batters he faced.
5. Weaver Gets Out of Bases Loaded, Nobody Out Jam in 7th
So it was 5-2 Mets when Aaron Judge led off the top of the 7th with a double down the line in right off reliever Brooks Raley.

Cody Bellinger then lifted a fly ball to right that Carson Benge lost in the mild wind and dropped — Judge scampering around to score. Mets 5 Yankees 3.

Raley then hit Paul Goldschmidt with a pitch, and Jazz Chisholm Jr. reached on a bunt single to load the bases with nobody out.
In came former Yank Luke Weaver, and he did what he had done for the Yanks so many times — he got out of the jam.
Weaver struck out Amed Rosario and Trent Grisham, and got Anthony Volpe to ground out to short to end the inning and the threat.

Tim Hill allowed a couple of hits sandwiching an out in the bottom of the 7th and was relieved by Camilo Doval, who allowed a groundout to score a run and make it 6-3 Mets, before getting the final out.
Weaver stayed in for the top of the 8th — now with a 6-3 lead — and threw a shutout inning. He allowed a leadoff single to Austin Wells, but got Ben Rice to ground into a double play (Weaver covering 1st) and retired Judge on a flyout to center.
6. Devin Closes it
Paul Blackburn pitched a shutout 8th, so it was 6-3 Mets to the 9th — when former Yank Devin Williams got strikeout, fly out, and groundout for the old ballgame.
