The Yankees only got 3 hits. Again. And lost to the Boston Red Sox. Again. At Fenway Park. Again.
Final score Boston 4 NY 1 on a Saturday afternoon at Fenway — in a game extremely similar to the night before when NY only got 3 hits and lost 6-1 at Fenway.
And kind of similar to the night before that, when NY gave up 6 unearned runs and lost 6-3.
Three straight loses at Fenway slices the Yankees’ 1st place lead from 3 games to 0 games — they are now tied with Tampa, in fact percentage pts behind.
This time Gerrit Cole started for NY, and he coughed up 2 homer balls in the first 2 innings, and 4 runs by the 3rd — putting the Yanks down 4-0 early just like the night before. And just like the night before, a young Red Sox starter stymied the Yanks — this time 25-year-old, 6’6 lefty Jake Bennett threw 6.1 innings of 3-hit, 1 run ball.
The only Yankee run came on a solo homer by Max Schuemann in the 5th inning.
At least Cole settled down to pitch a shutout 4th and 5th, leaving with 1 out in the 6th — so that was good news. And the Yankee pen of Brent Headrick, Camilo Doval, and Paul Blackburn pitched 2.2 innings of shutout relief.
“I thought maybe the 1st part of the game being a little careful which led to some mistakes,” said manager Aaron Boone about Cole, who allowed the HR’s on his 97-MPH four-seam fastball. “I thought the last 3 or 4 innings he really got aggressive and a little bit like, ‘let’s just let it rip and get after it’ and finished really well.”
NY drops to 48-34, tied with Tampa for 1st. Boston improves to 35-46.
1. Cole Roughed Up Early
Cole came in for his 7th start of the season after returning from Tommy John surgery that had kept him out the last 1.5 years. He got hit for a solo HR by Masataka Yoshida on a 93-MPH four-seam fastball to lead off the game.

Former Yankee prospect Anthony Seigler hit a solo HR over The Green Monster in the 2nd off a 97-MPH four-seam fastball by Cole to make it 2-0 Boston.

And then in the 3rd, Cole allowed consecutive leadoff singles to Yoshida and Ceddanne Rafaela, then a 1-out, 2-RBI double to left center by Willson Contreras to make it 4-0 Boston.
Good news — after that Cole got aggressive as Boone said, striking out the last 2 batters of the 3rd, and pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the 4th, a shutout 5th (allowing just a 1-out single), and striking out the leadoff batter of the 6th before a single by Caleb Durbin sent him to the showers at 89 pitches.
2. Bennett Throwing No Hitter into 5th
Meanwhile the 6’6 rookie lefty Jake Bennett walked Cody Bellinger to lead off the 2nd, but got everyone else out and was pitching a no hitter for Boston through 4 innings.
Bennett had just come off a start where he pitched 6 innings of 4-hit shutout ball against Colorado.
He was using a 93-MPH sinker, 92-MPH four-seam fastball, and 83-MPH changeup.
The Yanks were making contact — some of it hard like a shot by Anthony Volpe leading off the 3rd — but right at the 2nd baseman — that old computer-aided positioning at play.
3. Schuemann HR Makes It 4-1 in 5th
Jasson Dominguez hit a drive caught by the Pesky Pole to lead off the 5th — but a batter later Max Schuemann finally ended the no hitter with a shot over The Green Monster — originally called a double but on quick review ruled a Homerun. Boston 4 NY 1.

4. Yank Pen Keeps them In It
Brent Headrick relieved Cole with 1 out and a runner on in the 6th, and walked a batter before striking out 2 to end the inning.
Headrick struck out the 1st batter of the 7th before yielding to Camilo Doval who got 2 quick outs, the later one on a strikeout.
Paul Blackburn pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 8th — getting some help from Anthony Volpe at shortstop who made a great play on a chopper.

5. Yanks Put 2 Runners on in 7th
The Yanks put some pressure on Bennett in the 7th with consecutive singles by Amed Rosario and Cody Bellinger leading off the inning. “Here come the Yankees!” said Dave Sims on the Yankee radio broadcast.
But Bennett struck out The Martian, and then 6’4 righty Justin Slaten came in and struck out Jose Caballero and Jazz Chisholm Jr. (pinch hitting for Schuemann) to end the threat.
Former Yankee Garrett Whitlock pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 8th, and former Yankee Aroldis Chapman pitched the 9th. He got the first 2 outs before Cody Bellinger worked an 11-pitch walk.
The Yanks needed one more baserunner to bring the tying run to the plate in the 4-1 game. But Chapman got The Martian to pop out to 1st for the old ballgame.
