Brent Headrick allowed a 3-run HR to Coby Mayo in the 7th inning to blow a 2-0 lead and waste Ryan Weathers‘ no-hit bid into the 7th as NY went down to its 4th straight defeat, 3-2 to the Orioles on a Monday night in Baltimore.
Ben Rice had hit a 2-run HR in the 3rd to give NY a 2-0 lead, and Ryan Weathers was SMOKING — striking out 9 with 0 hits allowed into the 7th. Adley Rutschman singled to lead off the inning and break up the no hitter, then Weathers got an out but walked Tyler O’Neill and was relieved by Headrick. Next batter Mayo hit the 3-run HR to left.
Ryan McMahon hit a sky high fly to the rightfield wall in the 9th that O’Neill had to leap to catch — McMahon came 1 foot from tying the game. Paul Goldschmidt then singled with 2 outs, but Jose Caballero — pinch running — was thrown out trying to steal 2nd. He was originally called safe but the Orioles won the challenge.
“I liked Headrick in that spot,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards. “If we go Bird they’ll flip to the lefty. Got a guy whose been struggling from the right side and liked that matchup. Hung a slider and Mayo put a good swing on it.”
Weathers had “A little bit of everything,” said Boone. “Fastball was playing really well, both 4-seam and sinker. His sweeper and changeup were both good. He was tough. Probably ran out of gas a little there at the end but he was great.”
NY falls to 26-16 and are now 2 games back of Tampa in the AL East. Baltimore improves to 19-23.
1. Rice HR Puts Yanks Up 2-0 in 3rd
The Yanks were up against Brandon Young, a 6’6, 27-year-old righty. Young best known for throwing an immaculate inning (9 pitches, 9 strikes) against the New York Mets in 2025, and for tossing a near perfect game against the Houston Astros where he retired 24 of the 25 batters he faced before losing his bid in the 8th inning.
Young throws a 95-MPH four-seam fastball and sinker, a tough Splitter, and a slider/cutter.
The Yanks got to him in the 1st with a 1-out single by Ben Rice and 2-out walk by Cody Bellinger, but Young got Jazz Chisholm Jr. to fly out to end the inning. Young rebounded with a 1-2-3 inning in the 2nd.
But in the 3rd, Trent Grisham worked a 1-out walk, and Ben Rice ripped a sinker 374 feet to opposite-field left center for a 2-0 Yankee lead.

Meanwhile Ryan Weathers was lights out — pitching a no-hitter into the 7th, with 9 K’s and only 2 walks.

3. Mayo 3-Run HR Off Headrick Puts Orioles in Lead
Weathers had the no-hitter going into the 7th and the Yankees had a 2-0 lead, when Adley Rutschman singled to lead off the inning. Weathers got a groundout but walked Tyler O’Neill and was relieved by Headrick.
Next batter Mayo hit the 3-run HR to left. Baltimore 3 NY 2 just like that.

4. Doval Pitches Shutout 8th
Headrick pitched a shutout 7th, and Camilo Doval came in and looked good — pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the 8th with 2 K’s.

5. Baltimore Pen Shuts Out Yanks
After the Rice HR, Young retired 8 in a row — pitching a shutout 4th and 5th — before Aaron Judge led off the 6th with a double to left.
Young got Cody Bellinger to ground out to 1st, moving Judge to 3rd and was relieved by 34-year-old, 6’1 lefty Dietrich Enns.
With Judge on 3rd and 1 out, Enns struck out Jazz Chisholm Jr. and got Ryan McMahon to ground out to 1st — ending the threat.
Enns worked around a 1-out double to Max Schuemann in the 7th to pitch a shutout inning. Schuemann was playing shortstop with Jose Caballero out with an injured middle finger.
32-year-old, 5’9 righty Rico Garcia came in to pitch a 1-2-3 inning in the 8th, striking out 2.
6. McMahon Just Misses HR in 9th
Anthony Nunez, a 24-year-old, 6’2 righty, came in for the save.
He struck out Chisholm to start the inning, but next batter Ryan McMahon hit a sky high fly to the rightfield wall in the 9th that O’Neill had to leap to catch — McMahon came 1 foot from tying the game.
