Yanks BLOW Another Schlittler Gem, Under a Full Moon. ChiSox 6 NY 5 in 12

Spencer Jones 3-run HR in 1st puts NY up 4-0.

The Yanks had a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the 7th with Cam Schlittler pitching a 1-hit shutout against the White Sox.

It looked like a certain win.

But under a full moon on a Wednesday night in Chicago the following happened:

  • Cam allowed a walk, hit batter, and double to leave with a 4-1 lead — Fernando Cruz getting the final outs of the 7th.
  • Cruz allowed a leadoff double in the 8th, but got an out and left for Paul Blackburn — who immediately coughed up a 2-run HR to Sam Antonacci and a solo HR to Munetaka Murakami to tie the game 4-4.
  • Ben Rice “just missed” hitting a 2-run HR in the top of the 10th — his drive caught a foot from the centerfield wall.
  • Anthony Volpe pinch-hit an RBI sac fly in the top of the 11th, and the Yanks were an out away from winning in the bottom of the 11th — with the inherited runner on 3rd, 2 out and Camilo Doval on the mound. But Ali Sanchez tried to pick the runner off 3rd and threw the ball in the dirt and past Ryan McMahon into left field for a tie game.
  • The Yanks had 1st and 3rd with nobody out in the 12th after a leadoff single by Jose Caballero — but couldn’t plate the run — even loading the bases with 1 out but Ben Rice struck out and Ali Sanchez grounded out.
  • And finally the White Sox walked it off with a 1-out single to plate the inherited runner from 3rd in the bottom of the 12th.

The most frustrating loss of the year.

Earlier, the Yanks built their 4-0 lead courtesy of a 3-run HR by Spencer Jones in the 1st inning. Jones had 2 hits on the game — some good news to come away with.

“The Murakami one looked like not a bad pitch,” said manager Aaron Boone on the back-to-back HR’s allowed by Blackburn in the 8th. “Probably went up there hunting it a little bit and put a great swing on it. Antonacci looks like up and in, kind of gets the barrel to it and able to keep it fair and ride it out. A really sharp 9th by Paul there. A couple of really good swings; sometimes they get you.”

NY falls to 61-47, and fall 2.5 behind Tampa and 4.5 ahead of Boston. The White Sox improve to 56-51, in 1st in the AL Central by 1.5 games over Cleveland.

1. S Jones 3-Run HR in 1st Puts NY Up 4-0

Davis Martin, a 6’2 righty who came in with a 9-5 3.49 record, started for the White Sox. The Yanks got to him in the top of the 1st: a 1-out double by Ben Rice, walk to Jasson Dominguez, and RBI single by Paul Goldschmidt made it 1-0 Yanks just like that.

Next batter Spencer Jones hit a 3-run Bomb to left center for a 4-0 Yankee lead.

2. Schlittler Fantastic Again

Cam Schlittler took the mound with a 4-0 lead and laid down yet another fantastic start — a perfect game into the 4th, and a 1-hit shutout through 6 innings with 8 strikeouts.

Cam was throwing his 100-MPH heat and his Wicked 90-MPH curveball.

3. Martin Tough After the 1st; Yanks ‘Almost’ Make it 5-0 in 7th

Davis Martin settled down after the 1st inning and pitched a shutout 2nd through 6th — using his curveball and slider to set up a 93-MPH fastball and get lots of groundouts.

Chris Murphy relieved Davis Martin for the 7th.

The Yanks had a chance to make it a 5-0 lead as Jose Caballero doubled to lead off the inning, and was moved to 3rd on a fly out by Austin Wells. But Murphy struck out Trent Grisham and Ben Rice to strand the runner on 3rd.

4. Schlittler Leaves with 4-1 Lead in 7th; Cruz to Rescue

Schlittler was amazing through 6 innings, with a 1-hit shutout going and no walks — NY up 4-0.

But he walked Munetaka Murakami in a 7-pitch at bat leading off the 7th — his first walk since July 11th — covering 3 starts. Murakami walks a lot — he has a .380 OBP to go along with a 23-49-.240 slash line. The 26-year-old 1st baseman is in his rookie season after the White Sox nabbed him as a free agent out of Japan this winter for a 2-yr contract at $17M a year.

Schlittler then hit Miguel Vargas with a pitch — but got Colson Montgomery to pop out, before Andrew Benintendi doubled in Murakami for a 4-1 game.

Fernando Cruz came in with runners on 2nd and 3rd and 1 out — and got a pop out (of Braden Montgomery) and strike out to end the inning.

5. Blackburn Coughs Up Back-to-Back HR’s in 8th

But Cruz allowed a leadoff double to Meidroth in the 8th, then got a pop out and was relieved by Paul Blackburn in a 4-1 game.

Dave Sims and Suzanne Waldman waxed poetic about Blackburn on the radio — on the amazing job he has been doing out of the pen. And just as Suzyn finished waxing poetic — Sam Antonacci hit HR to right for a 4-3 game.

Next batter Murakami homered to center to tie the game 4-4.

6. Rice Came “This Close” in 10th; Volpe Drives in Go-Ahead Run in 11th

Righties Trevor Richards and Grant Taylor shut the Yanks out in the 8th and 9th — and Paul Blackburn rebounded from the HR’s allowed to pitch a 1-2-3 shutout 9th so we were to extras.

Taylor stayed in for the top of the 10th and struck out Trent Grisham to begin the inning — NY unable to move the inherited runner. Ben Rice then hit a DRIVE to DEEP Center — caught at the wall — he “just missed”.

Tim Hill Heroic

Tim Hill threw a wild pitch to begin the bottom of the 10th — but with the runner on 3rd and nobody out, proceeded to get 2 consecutive groundouts straight to shortstop — Caballero holding the runner — and a strikeout to end the inning.

Taylor was still in for the top of the 11th, when Paul Goldschmidt moved the runner with a groundout to start the inning.

Volpe Puts Yanks Ahead

Anthony Volpe then pinch hit for Spencer Jones against lefty reliever Bryan Hudson — and hit a sac fly to right for a 5-4 Yankee lead.

7. Sanchez Throws the Win Away in 10th

Camilo Doval pitched the bottom of the 11th — and got a groundout that moved the inherited runner — Murakami — to 3rd — Paul Goldschmidt making a terrific catch at 1st to save the game.

Doval then got a groundout to Ryan McMahon at 3rd who made a terrific play for the 2nd out.

NY was an out away from victory — when Ali Sanchez tried to pick off Murakami and threw it in the dirt off McMahon’s glove and into left field for a tie game.

8. Yanks Get Runner to 3rd w Nobody Out in 11th — Don’t Score

Jordan Hicks with his 100 MPH fastball pitched the top of the 11th for the White Sox.

Jose Caballero led off with a single, sending the inherited runner — Ryan McMahon — to 3rd. But Max Schuemann popped out to the infield. Trent Grisham walked to load the bases– but Hicks struck out Ben Rice and got Ali Sanchez to ground out.

9. ChiSox Walk It Off

Ryan Yarbrough took the mound for the 12th — and after Chase Meidroth bunted the inherited runner to 3rd, Edgar Quero singled to center for the old ballgame.
