Volpe, Schuemann & The Martian Support Gerrit Cole Gem. NY 3 ChiSox 2

Anthony Volpe RBI double in 2nd puts Yanks up 1-0. Volpe went 1-4 and is batting .250 with a .341 OBP.

Anthony Volpe doubled in The Martian and Max Schuemann followed with a 2-run single for a 3-0 lead in the 2nd inning, and that’s all the Yankees needed to beat the White Sox 3-2 behind 6 shutout innings by Gerrit Cole on a Tuesday night in Chicago.

Angel Chivilli and Brent Headrick pitched a shutout 7th and 8th, and David Bednar allowed a 2-run HR to Chase Meidroth with 2 outs in the 9th before getting the final strikeout for the win.

The Martian went 2-3 with a hit-by-pitch and a stolen base; he and Volpe have been the primary offensive weapons in the Yankee lineup the last few games.

“Right from jump I thought he had a really good fastball both in stuff and command,” said manager Aaron Boone about Cole. “Lost a little bit of the command in the 4th inning and that’s when they were able to pressure him. But he didn’t break — made some pitches, righted the ship — pretty easy 5th and gave us 6 innings which was big.”

NY improves to 61-46, and move to 1.5 behind Tampa and 5.5 ahead of Boston. The White Sox fall to 55-51, still in 1st place in the AL Central, 1.5 games ahead of Cleveland.

1. Martian, Volpe, & Shuemann Put NY Up 3-0 in 2nd

The White Sox started 6’0 lefty Anthony Kay who came in with a 7-4 4.21 record. He struck out the side in the 1st inning — using a 97-MPH four-seam fastball, 96-MPH sinker, 92-MPH cutter, 83-MPH sweeper, and 86-MPH slider.

But the Yanks jumped on him in the 2nd inning: Jasson Dominguez led off with a single, Trent Grisham followed with a single, and Anthony Volpe doubled in a run.

Kay struck out Jazz Chisholm Jr. but Max Shuemann doubled down the line in left for 2 more runs and a 3-0 Yankee lead.

2. Cole On His Game

Meanwhile Gerrit Cole was ON HIS GAME. For the 3rd start in a row he was dominant.

Cole was helped in the 1st by a great defensive play by Jazz Chisholm Jr. at 2nd base.

And Cole helped himself out with a gem of a defensive play in the 2nd.

Cole got in and out of trouble in the 4th — a leadoff double by 1st baseman Munetaka Murakami (slashing 22-48-.240, .380 OBP) and walk to 3rd baseman Miguel Vargas (22-63-.242, .348 OBP) — followed by a fly out and groundout — a walk to rightfielder Braden Montgomery (3-20-.257, .333 OBP) to load the bases — and a fly out by centerfielder Tristan Peters (6-37-.277, .333 OBP) to end the inning. Phew.

Cole easily worked around a 1-out single in the 5th and a 2-out single in the 6th to finish with 6 shutout innings — leaving with a 3-0 lead.

3. Chivilli Good Again

Angel Chivilli pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 7th — looking great again — with his easy-motion delivery and 98-MPH heat that moves, with his 88-MPH changeup and 89-MPH slider.

4. Headrick Good Again — with Help from Jazz

And Brent Headrick took care of business again with a shutout 8th — allowing just a 2-out single and getting help from Jazz Chisholm Jr. who made his 2nd tremendous defensive play of the game to end the inning.

5. Kay & the ChiSox Bullpen Good Too

Anthony Kay settled down after the 3 runs in the 2nd to pitch a shutout 3rd thru 5th inning. He hit The Martian with a pitch leading off the 6th, and after getting Trent Grisham to fly out was relieved by 6’2 righty Jordan Hicks.

The Martian immediately stole 2nd base — but was stranded there as Hicks struck out Anthony Volpe, walked Jazz Chisholm Jr., and struck out Spencer Jones. The 29-year-old Hicks was a long-time setup man for the St Louis Cardinals before spending 2 years with San Francisco and a year with Boston.

6’0 lefty Tyler Schweitzer pitched a shutout 7th, 8th, and 9th — working around a walk and a single in the 7th, a walk in the 8th, and pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the 9th.

6. Bednar Allows 2-Out, 2-Run HR But Gets Final Out

So it was 3-0 NY when David Bednar took the mound in the 9th. He allowed a 1-out single to Braden Montgomery sandwiched between 2 strikeouts.

With 2 outs, Chase Meidroth hit a 2-run HR to left and just like that it was a ballgame at 3-2.

But Bednar struck out former Yankee Everson Pereira on a 2-2 splitter for the old ballgame.
