Yanks Bang Out 24 Hits — Everyone Gets At Least 2 — in Romp. NY 15 KC 1

Amed Rosario hits the first of 2 HR's on the night. He went 4 for 6.

The Yanks banged out 24 hits to support another great start by Cam Schlittler in blasting the Royals 15-1 on a Tuesday night in Kansas City.

Bailey Falter started for the Royals, and boy did he falter — NY scored 7 runs on 9 hits including 3 Homers on him in 2.1 innings. The KC pen faltered too — the Yanks continued the hit attack against it, scoring 1 to 3 runs on each of 4 relievers.

It was a great night for Yankee batting averages. Everyone in the starting Yankee lineup got at least 2 hits to raise their average, even Austin Wells who went 3-6 to raise his average to .188.  It was the first time in Yankee history that everyone in the starting lineup got 2 or more hits.

At one point in the 8th inning Jazz Chisholm Jr. was the only Yankee without a hit — and he finished 2-5 (to raise his average to .246) with a HR!

Keeping track at home:

  • Amed Rosario led the charge, going 4-6 with 2 HR’s to raise his average to .279.
  • Anthony Volpe went 3-6 with a HR to raise his average to .281.
  • Aaron Judge went 2-3 with 2 walks to raise his average to .256.
  • Ben Rice went 3-5 to break out of a slump and raise his average to .285.
  • Cody Bellinger went 2-5 with a HR to raise his average to .277.
  • Paul Goldschmidt went 2-6 to raise his average to .255.
  • Trent Grisham went 3-7 with a HR to raise his average to .201.

“Just obviously a really good night for the guys,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards.

NY improves to 33-22 and pulls to 2.5 games behind Tampa, which lost its 3rd game in a row. KC falls to 22-33.

1. Falters Falters

Bailey Falters is a 29-yr-old, 6’4 lefty. He got the first 2 outs in the top of the 1st, when Cody Bellinger began the hit parade with a HR to right for a 1-0 Yankee lead.

Next batter Paul Goldschmidt doubled to left, and Ben Rice hit a liner to right that Jac Caglianone appeared to make a shoestring catch on — it was initially called an out to end the inning. But the Yankees challenged and won as replays showed the ball touched the ground as Caglianone was securing it in his glove — and Ben Rice had an RBI single. NY 2 KC 0.

Next batter Amed Rosario homered to center for a 4-0 Yankee lead.

2. Volpe HR Makes It 5-0 in 2nd

Anthony Volpe led off the top of the 2nd with a 409-ft HR to center and it was 5-0 Yanks.

3. Falters Yanked in 3rd — But Pen Falters; NY Goes Up 9-0

Ben Rice and Amed Rosario both singled to lead off the top of the 3rd, and after getting Jazz Chisholm Jr. to fly out, Falters was yanked — relieved by 24-year-old, 6’3 righty Luinder Avila.

The Yanks did not let up.

Volpe singled to left, scoring Rice for a 5-0 Yankee lead.

Austin Wells singled to right, moving the runners, and Trent Grisham grounded out to score a run. Aaron Judge walked to load the bases, and Cody Bellinger singled in 2 runs to make it 9-0.

4. Schlittler Mows ‘Em Down without Best Stuff

Meanwhile Cam Schlittler mowed down the Royals with 6 innings of 4-hit ball, allowing 1 run, striking out 6 with no walks.

The one run came on a solo HR by Bobby Witt Jr. in the bottom of the 3rd — NY leading 9-0 at the time.

Schlittler, staked to a 4-0 lead, allowed a 2-out single in the 1st, and a 1-out double in the 2nd — then struck out 2 guys to end that inning.

After allowing the solo HR to Witt with 2 outs in the 3rd, Schlittler pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 4th, worked around a 1-out single in the 5th (NY leading 10-1 at the time), and threw a 1-2-3 inning in the 6th.

Boone took Schlittler out after 77 pitches. “I thought he was ok,” said Boone. “I thought they had a lot of really good at bats on him and didn’t have much to show for it. Probably not his best stuff tonite — but you look up and it’s 6 innings of 1-run baseball; really efficient. After a couple of longer outings his last 2 outs, was going shorter with him tonite regardless, and to have that kind of a lead and have him have a less strenuous outing was good.”

5. Judge RBI Double Makes It 10-1

Avila pitched a 1-2-3 shutout inning in the 4th, but the Yanks got to him again in the 5th — a leadoff walk by Jazz Chisholm, and a 2-out infield single by Grisham put 2 runners on for Aaron Judge, who doubled in a run to make it 10-1.

6. Grisham HR Makes It 11-1

Avila got in more trouble in the 6th — a double by Ben Rice and single by Rosario put runners at the corners with 1 out. KC brought in 26-yr-old, 6’7 righty Steven Cruz to relieve Avila and he struck out Chisholm and Volpe to end the threat — keeping KC within 10-1.

But NY got to Cruz in the 7th — Trent Grisham with a 414-foot bomb to right center for an 11-1 Yankee lead.

7. Chisholm HR; Volpe Double; Wells RBI Single for 13-1 Lead

The Royals brought in 30-yr-old, 5’10 righty Eli Morgan to pitch the 8th and the Yankees pounced once again. Jazz Chisholm Jr. — the only Yankee without a hit on the evening — hit a 416-foot HR to right center for a 12-1 Yankee lead.

Next batter Anthony Volpe doubled to right, and Austin Wells singled in Volpe for a 13-1 lead.

8. Rosario HR Makes It 15-1 in 8th

KC brought in 28-yr-old, 5-10 righty Tyler Tolbert for the top of the 8th, and the Yanks pounced once again. Ben Rice worked a 1-out walk, and Amed Rosario ripped a 381-foot HR — his 2nd of the night — to opposite field right center for a 15-1 game.

9. Yarbrough Pitches 3 Shutout Innings

Ryan Yarbrough came in for Schlittler to start the 7th, and the 34-year-old, 6’5 lefty pitched 3 shutout innings for the old ballgame.
