Yankee Bombers CRUSH Royals to Back Will Warren Gem. NY 13 KC 4

Cody Bellinger's 2nd HR of the day.

Noah Cameron was the leading vote-getter amongst rookie pitchers in the American League last year, finishing 4th in overall voting with a 9-7 2.99 record. He beat out Will Warren, who also had an excellent rookie year with a 9-8 4.44 record and finished 8th in the voting.

The Yankees crushed Cameron the one time they faced him last year, and they Crushed him again this time — while Will Warren pitched a 3-hit shutout into the 7th as NY won BIG, 13-4 on a chilly Saturday afternoon at Yankee Stadium (60 degrees and sunny).

It’s a toss-up as to which the bigger story was: Will Warren’s gem — he finally allowed a 2-run HR in the 7th to break the shutout but struck out 11 and walked none — or the Yankee offense, led by Cody Bellinger with 2 HR’s, Ben Rice with a HR, and Amed Rosario with a HR.

Each of those Yankees hit a homer in a 3-HR 3rd inning as the Yanks took a 5-0 lead on Cameron, that they made 7-0 in the 4th, chasing him. NY made it 10-0 in the 6th off reliever Mitch Spence.

Bellinger went 3-4 on the day with 2 HR’s, 5 RBI’s and a walk. Amed Rosaio went 2-5 with the HR and 3 RBI’s.

The Yanks made it 13-2 in the 8th and waltzed. Paul Blackburn allowed 2 runs in the 9th for the final score.

“I thought the 4-seam was really playing well for him,” said manager Aaron Boone about Warren. “Got a lot of swing and miss with that. I thought his changeup was good today. And then overall the mix — he spun the ball well. But to me what stood out was the four seam and the changeup really playing well for him. And he was efficient. It was good to see him take that lead and go run with it. Go out and immediately have a shutdown inning, get us right back in. The pickoff was a good play. Obviously a really good job by him.”

“You’ve seen in all of his outings this year,” continued Boone about Warren, “what has stood out to me how much swing and miss he is getting with his fastball. He’s got a unique delivery and slot that allows that to play. He’s a better pitcher now than he was last year and at the end of last year and he keeps growing.”

NY improves to 12-9, .5 behind Tampa which won in extra innings. KC falls to 7-14.

1. Three Yankee Homers in 3rd Breaks It Open

Noah Cameron — the 26-year-old, 6’2 lefty — pitched a shutout 1st and 2nd inning — allowing only a walk to Aaron Judge in the 1st.

But his defense deserted him in the 3rd — with 1 out J.C. Escarra hit a ball to deep right but playable — unfortunately rightfielder Vinnie Pasquantino and elite defensive centerfielder Kyle Isbel ran into each other — their gloves colliding causing Pasquantino to drop the fly — as Escarra raced to 3rd.

Two pitches later Amed Rosario ripped a 91-MPH cutter 390 feet to left center for a 2-0 Yankee lead.

Cameron walked next batter Aaron Judge for the 2nd time in the game, and Cody Bellinger bombed a 385-foot homer to right.

Cameron got Giancarlo Stanton to groundout, but lefty Ben Rice made it 3 HR’s in the inning with a 398-foot Bomb to right off the left hander. Rice is on an MVP pace — and despite that has sat several games recently against lefty pitching — but not today.

2. Yanks Take 7-0 Lead in 4th

Will Warren allowed a leadoff single to Bobby Witt Jr. in the top of the 4th — but picked him off 1st and got 2 quick outs — and NY was right back at Cameron in the bottom of the 4th.

And Jose Caballero led off with a single followed by a J.C. Escarra RBI double for a 6-0 NY lead.

Cameron got 2 outs, but Cody Bellinger ripped a 2-out RBI single to center for a 7-0 Yankee lead.

3. Yanks Make It 10-0 in 6th

The Yanks pounded reliever Mitch Spence in the 6th — Jose Caballero leading off with an infield single, and Amed Rosario singling him home a batter later.

Cody Bellinger hit his 2nd HR of the game — a 2-run Bomb to right for a 10-0 Yankee lead.

4. Warren Masterpiece

Meanwhile the big lead let fans sit back and appreciate Will Warren — who was absolutely filthy and in command. His 95-MPH fastball MOVING, offset by his wicked change to fool batters.

Warren had 9 strikeouts with no walks and only 2 hits allowed thru 5 innings. He was throwing a 3-hit shutout into the 7th, with 10 strikeouts and no walks when the Royals finally got to him — a 1-out single and then a 2-run HR by Carter Jensen made it a 10-2 game.

But Warren got a groundout and strikeout to end his outing.

5. Yanks Make It 12-2 in 7th

The Royals left Mitch Spence in to absorb innings — and punishment.

Spence walked Ben Rice and Jazz Chisholm Jr. amidst 2 outs, then yielded a 2-RBI triple to right by Escarra and it was 12-2 NY.

6. Yanks Lead 13-2 Into 9th

Spence walked Ryan McMahon and Bellinger to lead off the 8th, and then walked Rice with 1 out to load the bases. A sac fly by Randal Grichuk made it 13-2 NY.

Paul Blackburn pitched a shutout 8th for NY, but allowed a single, walk, and 2-out, 2-RBI double by Michael Massey in the 9th to make it 13-4, before getting a strikeout for the old ballgame.
