Spencer Jones replaced Aaron Judge — who will be out 4 to 6 weeks with a fracture in his rib cage — and went 3 for 3 with an RBI double but the Yankees lost 5-3 to the Red Sox on a beautiful Friday night at Yankee Stadium.
Ryan Weathers allowed a couple of Homerun balls and 5 runs in 6 innings to absorb the loss.
Sonny Gray — who failed in his stay with the Yanks 8 and 9 years ago — started for the Red Sox and pitched 3-run ball into the 7th inning, getting the win to go 7-1 3.20.
The severity of Judge’s injury was announced before the game, so Jones’ performance was extra special as he will get a chance to be the right fielder for the next 4 to 6 weeks.
“Obviously he’s got a boat-load of talent,” said manager Aaron Boone about Spencer. “And to know you’ve earned the right to be up here and get this shot, and you want it, and to get some results behind these early days of being in the big leagues is always a good thing.”
“I thought his stuff was really good overall,” said Boone about Weathers. “But was a little scattered. Not that he was walking a lot of guys but a lot of longer counts, and they took advantage of a handful of mistakes.”
NY drops to 37-26, and fall 1.5 games behind Tampa. Boston improves to 27-35.
1. Rice HR Gives Yanks 1-0 Lead in 1st
Sonny Gray is now 36 years old. The 5’10 righty went 13-9 3.84 and 14-8 4.28 in 2024 and 2025, respectively, for St Louis before Boston acquired him for minor leaguers this winter.
Gray was good.
But Ben Rice a-ronied him in the 1st for a solo HR to right for his 18th HR of the year. Rice would go 2-3 on the day with a walk; his slash line is now 18-45-.305 (.398 OBP). Ben Rice MVP.

2. Weathers Allows 5 Runs in 6 Innings
Ryan Weathers had a shutout going into the 3rd, but allowed consecutive 1-out singles to Connor Wong and Jarren Duran, and walked Ceddanne Rafaela to load the bases.
Wil Abreu grounded out for a run to tie the game 1-1, and Contreras reached on an infield single to make it 2-1 Boston before Weathers got the final out.
Weathers got touched for a solo HR by Monasterio to make it a 3-1 game in the 4th.
Weathers got the first 2 outs of the 6th, but a hard-hit grounder went under Jazz Chisholm’s glove for a single.

Next batter Contreras hit a 2-run HR just fair down the line in left to make it 5-2 Boston.

3. Jones RBI Double Makes It 3-2 Boston in 4th
Spencer Jones — who is getting the chance to play everyday with Aaron Judge expected out 4-6 weeks — singled his first time up in the 2nd inning, then doubled in Jazz Chisholm Jr. in the 4th to make it a 3-2 game at the time.

Jones singled to right his 3rd time up, in the 6th — going 3-3 on the day. He was replaced by Max Schuemann for defense late in the game.
4. Grisham HR Pulls Yanks Within 5-3
Trent Grisham hit a 426-foot BOMB off Gray in the 6th to make it a 5-3 game, Boston on top.

5. Blackburn Throws 2 Shutout Innings
Weathers pitched a 1-2-3 shutout inning in the 6th, then was relieved by Paul Blackburn to start the 7th.
Blackburn threw 2 shutout, 1-2-3 innings — retiring every batter he faced.
6. Doval Good
More good news — Camilo Doval pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the 9th — striking out 2.
7. Chapman Shaky But Gets Save
And so the game went to the bottom of the 9th, NY down 5-3.
Former Yank Aroldis Chapman came in and walked Max Schuemann leading off, struck out Volpe, and walked Amed Rosario and the Yanks had something cooking.
But Chapman got Jose Caballero to fly out to right, and Trent Grisham to ground out to 3rd for the old ballgame.
