Will Warren was Electric in the first 2 innings, but got knicked in the 3rd for a 2-out, 2-run double, and knocked in the 5th for a 2-out, 3-run HR by Spencer Steer to make it a 6-1 game as the Reds obliterated the Yankees 10-2 on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at Yankee Stadium.
Ben Rice made an error at 1st leading off the 5th — causing all runs in the inning to be unearned. He struck out 8 in 5.2 innings, but loses to go 7-2 3.45.
The Yanks almost got right back in the game in the bottom of the 5th — loading the bases with 2 outs, but Paul Goldschmidt took a 3-2 pitch for strike 3. NY also put the first 2 batters on in the 6th, but failed to score.
Ryan Yarbrough got ripped for 4 runs in the 8th to make it a blowout.
“It was odd; I think it could have been better,” said Will Warren afterwards when asked to describe his performance. “We got to find a way to minimize the damage there.”
“I thought the first 2 innings was electric,” said manager Aaron Boone about Warren. “Just how it was coming out, using both sides of the plate — 4- and 2-seam. Then they just pressured him a little bit; made a couple of mistakes; we don’t make a play and they take advantage of that, and they hit the long ball on him.”
NY falls to 46-29, but stay 3 games ahead of Tampa for 1st place in the AL East. Cincinnati improves to 36-39.
1. Goldschmidt Starts Things Off with Bang
The Reds started 27-year-old, 6’0 lefty Andrew Abbott, who came in with a 4-4 3.95 record.
Paul Goldschmidt — who hits lefties better than anyone in MLB — got the afternoon off to a good start, belting a Homer to opposite-field right off Abbott in the bottom of the 1st. Yankees 1 Reds 0.

But with 1 out in the 3rd, Arroyo doubled and Warren walked centerfielder Blake Dunn. Warren got leftfielder JJ Bleday to line out for the 2nd out in the inning — but 3rd baseman Sal Stewart doubled to left for a 2-1 Cincinnati lead.
Stewart — who bats 3rd in Cincy’s lineup — would go 2-4 with 2 doubles and 6 RBI on the day. He is now slashing 14-53-.252 (.346 OBP) on the year.
Warren pitched a shutout 4th, but Ben Rice made an error to start the 5th, and after a groundout, JJ Bleday doubled to right and Stewart hit a sac fly for a 3-1 Cincy lead.
With 2 outs, Warren walked DH Nathaniel Lowe, and Spencer Steer got hold of a 93-MPH sinker on a 2-1 pitch, and bombed it 407 feet to left for a 6-1 game.

Warren would get the first 2 outs in the 6th before yielding 2 singles and leaving for Tim Hill who got the final out.
3. Yanks Threaten in 5th & 6th But Don’t Score
Meanwhile Abbott was getting past the Yankee lineup — allowing at least one baserunner in each inning but pitching around it.
The Yanks almost pushed right back against the 6-1 deficit in the bottom of the 5th — loading the bases with 2 outs on consecutive 1-out singles by Anthony Volpe and Ali Sanchez, and a 2-out walk by Amed Rosario (after Ben Rice made the 2nd out by ripping a liner to 1st that was caught).
Paul Goldschmidt worked the count 3-2 against Abbott, then took a strike-3 call that he challenged by lost.

NY got consecutive singles by Cody Bellinger and Jasson Dominguez leading off the 6th — chasing Abbott. But 6’4 righty TJ Antone came in and got pop out, foul out, and fly out to end the threat.
4. Yarbrough Gets Lit Up
Greg Bird pitched a shutout 7th and Ryan Yarbrough — who had just pitched 3 shutout innings 2 days ago — pitched the 8th and didn’t do well.
Single, groundout, single, single, strikeout, and then consecutive 2-out, 2-RBI doubles (by Sal Stewart and pinch hitter Dane Myers) made it a 10-1 game.
5. Belli & The Martian Combine for Run in 8th
NY got a run off 6’4 lefty Brock Burke in the 8th — consecutive singles by Cody Bellinger and Jasson Dominguez to start the inning, and Jose Caballero just beating out a double-play grounder for a run.

Infielder Max Schuemann pitched the 9th — and did well — walk, groundout, fly out, single, and fly out.
