Andrew Benintendi hit a Grand Slam with 1 out in the 8th to break a 1-1 tie and give the White Sox a 5-1 win over the Yankees on a warm, WINDY Thursday night in the Bronx — breaking NY’s 4-game winning streak.
It was the 9th HR of the year for the 31-year-old Benintendi, who played with the Yankees in 2022. Benintendi is well on the way to his 3rd straight 20-HR season with the White Sox.
Ryan Weathers started for NY and pitched great — 6.1 IP, 3 hits, 1 run, 8 K’s, 1 walk. The only run he allowed was a solo HR to ChiSox young superstar shortstop Colson Montgomery in the 2nd.
Ryan McMahon tied the game 1-1 with a solo HR in the 3rd for NY. But other than that, the Yanks were shut down by 26-year-old, 6’6 righty Sean Burke, who came on in relief to pitch 7.1 innings of 5-hit, 1-run ball, striking out 8 and walking 1.
Camillo Doval came into a bases-loaded, 1-out situation in the 8th, and coughed up the Grand Slam to Benintendi.
“Definitely not the result you want right there,” said Doval through the Yankee translator. “I felt that coming into the game the situation was bases loaded, you try to throw strikes and get ahead. Threw a good sinker with good movement but he was able to hit it very well.”
NY falls to 45-28, in 1st by 3 over Tampa. The ChiSox improve to 39-34, in a 1st place tie with Cleveland in the AL Central.
1. Weathers Great — Sans the HR to Montgomery
Ryan Weathers has been pitching well but has been touched by a number of homeruns in recent outings. This time he was much better — allowing only a solo HR to Chisox young superstar shortstop Colson Montgomery — just as Meredith Markovitz was talking about how Weathers was a man on a mission on the broadcast.

After that Weathers — pitching in the warm (85 degrees) GUSTY, WINDY weather — blew thru the ChiSox lineup into the 7th. He got help from Jasson Dominguez in right in the bottom of the 2nd as he ran 30 feet to his right at the last second to track down a fly out.

“I thought he was really good,” said Boone about Weathers. “Pitch efficient; really filled it up. Montgomery hurt us this series obviously. Got a sinker out over the plate that he jumped for the homer. But really settled in from there and was in control of the game. You see how his stuff can play. He had the fastball going with a real presence. The breaking ball and changeup were really good again tonite. Really strong outing by Ryan.”

2. Burke Even Greater — Sans the HR to McMahon
Sean Burke was even better — coming in with with 2 outs in the 2nd, after “opener” B Hudson allowed a 2-out double to Spencer Jones, and throwing 7.1 superb innings to get the win. Burke was throwing 99 MPH heat with his four-seam fastball and sinker, and mixing in a good slider and curveball.

Burke only made a few mistakes — one was a solo HR by Ryan McMahon in the 3rd to tie the game 1-1.

“I was impressed with him,” said Boone about Burke. “One of those guys who has a 4-seam and 2-seam and can add and subtract with it. I thought he had a presence on both sides of the plate with both of those pitches, and then he spun it well — whether it was slider or curveball. And for the most part was pounding the strike zone. So I thought he threw the ball well and obviously slowed us down.”
3. Volpe Comes in for Chisholm — Hits Double in 8th, Gunned Down at 3rd
The McMahon HR was it for the Yanks — they did very little against Burke.
- Jazz Chisholm Jr. fouled a pitch off his balls in the 4th and had to leave the game. Anthony Volpe had to pinch hit for him mid at bat, and worked a walk — but was thrown out trying to steal 2nd.
- Jose Caballero singled off Burke in the 5th — but was picked off 1st.
- Volpe doubled to left with 1 out in the 7th in a 1-1 game, but was thrown out at 3rd trying to stretch it into a triple.
4. Doval Coughs Up Grand Slam to Benintendi in 8th
Fernando Cruz relieved Weathers with 1 out in the 7th after Colson Montgomery walked, and got fly out and strike out to end the inning.
But Cruz allowed a leadoff double to Sam Antonacci in the 8th, and was relieved by Tim Hill. Hill hit 2 consecutive batters with pitches, before striking out Chase Meidroth.
With 1 out, Camilo Doval came in and threw a 99-MPH sinker on the 1st pitch that Andrew Benintendi slammed 393 feet to right for a Grand Slam and 5-1 game.

5. Burke Finishes
Blessed with a 5-1 lead, Sean Burke pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 8th, and allowed a 1-out single to Paul Goldschmidt in the 9th before getting fly out (of Cody Bellinger) and strikeout (of The Martian) for the old ballgame.
