Yanks Get Snowed. Detroit 6 NY 2

In a game that featured occasional torrents of snow flurries in between the sun breaking out in 30-degree temps, the Yanks got snowed by the snow, Casey Mize, and the Tiger bullpen, losing 6-2 on a Monday afternoon in Detroit.

Carlos Rodon pitched great for NY — but walked two in the 3rd — the later one when he didn’t get a call on an apparent 3rd strike to Ryan Kriedler — then got nicked for a 2-out, 3-run homer to Andy Ibanez. Rodon coughed up 2 more runs in the 5th, done in by a leadoff error at 3rd by Oswaldo Cabrera, and a 2-out, 2-RBI single to Justyn-Henry Malloy.

Meanwhile Casey Mize pitched 6 tough innings of 4-hit, 1-run ball, and the Detroit bullpen did the rest — including a 1-2-3 save in the 9th by former Yank Tommy Kahnle.

The only Yankee runs on the day were on a 2-out RBI single by Aaron Judge in the 5th and on an error that scored Cody Bellinger from 2nd in the 8th.

“I thought he threw the ball great,” said manager Aaron Boone about Rodon. “Look he didn’t get a call in that inning, and makes the one mistake that turns into a 3-run homer, where he yanked the changeup a little bit and Ibanez got him. Outside of that I thought he was excellent. That’s what I told him. The line’s not going to show it — but we roll that out there every time with Carlos, we’re going to be in a good spot. I thought he did a lot of really good things, he was in control of the game, but that 3-2 call — looked like right there — then yanked the change a little bit that cost him.”

NY drops to 6-4. Detroit improves to 6-4.

1. Rodon Good

Rodon blew thru the first 2 innings of the game, retiring the first 7 batters in a row, including a strikeout to start the 3rd.

With 1 out in the 3rd he walked catcher Jake Rogers, and then appeared to strike out Ryan Kreidler on a 3-2 slider that the ump called low for a ball.

Rodon’s wife Ashley provided a visual of the call on Twitter (X):

Rodon struck out Justyn-Henry Malloy for the 2nd out of the inning, but Andy Ibanez nicked him for a 3-run homer to left and it was 3-0 Detroit.

Rodon then blew thru the 4th 1-2-3, but got nicked again in the 5th — with the Yanks down 3-1 Oswaldo Cabrera booted a grounder to start the inning, Rodon walked Rogers again, and then Ryan Kreidler bunted the runners to 2nd and 3rd. Justyn-Henry Malloy singled to center and it was 5-1 Detroit.

Rodon pitched a shutout 6th — allowing a 2-out single to Javier Baez, then picking Baez off 1st. Rodon allowed a leadoff single in the 6th and left after 103 pitches.

Adam Ottavino came in and walked a batter, struck out a batter, then walked another batter to load the bases with 1 out. Tim Hill came in and got 2 groundouts — the first of which scored a run, charged to Rodon — and it was 6-1 Detroit in the 7th.

Ottavino would be placed on waivers after the game.

2. Mize Kept Yanks Down

Meanwhile Mize was shutting down the Yank lineup — with a little help from the wind and the snow. The Yanks were hitting him, but the ball was staying in the ballpark.

Mize went 7-9 3.71 in 2021 as a promising young pitcher for Detroit at age 24 — and was Detroit’s #2 starter heading into 2022 when he blew out his arm and needed Tommy John surgery. He was out the rest of 2022 and 2023, and returned for 20 starts in 2024, going 2-6 4.49. With the win in this game, he leads the American League in wins with a 2-0 0.77.

“I thought we had the right at bats against Mize,” said Boone afterwards. “Different than Heaney; Heaney really shut us down yesterday in Pittsburgh. I thought we were having the right at bats (against Mize), I think we just missed some balls in the air in the outfield. Then couldn’t punch through; made a mistake on the bases. I thought Mize was good. But we were very close there to putting together a couple of big innings.”

The Yanks also ran themselves out of a run in the 3rd, when Ben Rice tripled with 1 out, but was picked off 3rd with Judge up. “He was going on contact in a situation where we weren’t doing that,” said Aaron Boone afterwards.

“Mize pitched well. But up and own the lineup — we had some good at bats,” added Boone. “Belli just missed one; Rice was on base all day; Grish just got one good to left, same with Wells — we took good at bats against him and just missed a handful of pitches.”

3. Judge Drives in Yanks’ First Run

The Yanks finally got to Mize in the 5th — Austin Wells hit a shot to left for a lineout, but Trent Grisham singled and moved to 2nd on a groundout by Cabrera. Ben Rice walked and Aaron Judge ripped a single past the shortstop for a 3-1 game.

4. Yanks Get a Run in the 8th

Down 6-1, the Yanks got a run in the 8th off Detroit reliever Beau BrieskeCody Bellinger reached on a 2-out infield single, and Paul Goldschmidt singled to left. Jazz Chisholm Jr. hit a grounder to 2nd that 2nd baseman Colt Keith bobbled then threw past the 1st baseman, scoring Bellinger.

Chisholm then stole 2nd and the Yanks had runners on 2nd and 3rd with 2 outs, down 6-2 — but Anthony Volpe flied out to right.

5. Kahnle the Save — for Detroit

And so it was to the 9th where old friend Tommy Kahnle retired the Yanks 1-2-3 for the old ballgame.
