Game-time temperature was 30 degrees but the ‘real’ temperature (aka formerly ‘wind chill’) made it feel like 20 degrees, said Suzyn Waldman on the broadcast as the game started at 1pm in Detroit on a Tuesday afternoon.
It was a cold, cold day for the Yankees — who were shut down by reigning Cy Young award winner Tarik Skubal for 6 innings, and reliever Brant Hurter for 3 innings. Meanwhile on the NY side, Carlos Carrasco got Ripped — leaving Yankee fans to start thinking that another starter is desperately needed.
Final score Detroit 5 NY 0 and it felt colder than that.
“Command,” said Carlos Carrasco afterwards about his outing. “Just missed a couple of spots. When you have command everything is completely different. But I missed a couple of spots and got hurt.”
When asked if he felt he had to be perfect when facing a pitcher like Skubal, Carrasco the old ace said “You know what? No. You just go out there and try to limit runs, but he pitched well today.
When asked if the cold affected him, Carrasco said “No. It felt normal. I just missed a couple of spots.”
NY drops to 6-5; Detroit improves to 7-4, taking the first 2 games of this 3 game set — with each game moved from evening to 1pm afternoon start because of the frigid cold front.
1. Yanks Started Off Good vs Skubal
Yanks got off to a good start against Tarik Skubal — Paul Goldschmidt leading off the game with a single to center off a 98-MPH fastball, and Ben Rice following with a single to center off a 96-MPH sinker.
But Skubal got tough — striking out Aaron Judge, getting Jazz Chisholm Jr. to ground out back to Skubal, and striking out Anthony Volpe with runners on 2nd and 3rd.
And that was it for the Yankee hopes for the afternoon.
Skubal was lights out thru 6 — blowing thru the Yankee lineup, pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th.
Finally in the 6th the Yankees — down 5-0 — got something going: Goldschmidt reached on an infield single with 1 out, and Judge singled to right with 2 outs. But Jazz Chisholm Jr. popped out to 3rd and that was it.
Skubal pitched 6 innings, allowing 4 hits, striking out 6 and walking none.
2. Carrasco RIPPED for HR’s
Meanwhile Carlos Carrasco’s glass slippers fell off. Carrasco had pitched great in his prior start but not this one. Maybe it was the cold weather which caused his breaking pitches not to break. But he got Ripped.
Carrasco pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 1st, but 1st baseman Spencer Torkelson led off the 2nd with a grounds-rule double, 2nd baseman Colt Keith singled to right, and rightfielder Zach McKinstry hit a sac fly for a 1-0 Detroit lead.
Carrasco pitched a shutout 3rd, but in the 4th, Torkelson led off with a 404-foot solo homer to left center, McKinstry followed with a one-out, 377-foot homer to right center, and catcher Dillon Dingler followed with a 379-foot solo homer to left center.
Detroit 4 NY 0.
3. Yarbrough Allows HR then Settles Down
Carrasco got the first out of the 5th then yielded to Ryan Yarbrough who immediately allowed a 361-foot homer to right by leftfielder Kerry Carpenter and it was 5-0 Detroit.
But Yarbrough settled down, striking out the next batter and getting a fly out to end the 5th, then pitching a shutout 6th (allowing 1 hit).
4. Hamilton & Cruz Pitch Good
Good news for NY: Ian Hamilton was back — and he pitched a shutout 7th — getting 2 strikeouts after allowing a leadoff single.
And Fernando Cruz looked great again — pitching a 1-2-3 shutout 8th — strikeout, fly out, foul out.
5. Hurter Shuts Down Yanks Too
Unfortunately for the Yanks, seeing Skubal leave after 6 was no relief — as Detroit brought in 26-year-old, 6’6 lefty Brant Hurter, and he shut down NY for the final 3 innings.
Hurter pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 7th, striking out David Wells and Jasson Dominguez. He pitched a shutout 8th, allowing a 2-out single to Paul Goldschmidt but striking out Ben Rice to end the inning.
And then Hurter pitched a shutout 9th — allowing a leadoff single to Aaron Judge, and then a 1-out walk to Anthony Volpe, but getting Wells to ground into a double play for the old ballgame.
On the day Aaron Judge went 2-4 and Paul Goldschmidt went 3-4 so that was nice.
