The game was 1-1 until the 5th inning, when the Yankee offense came on like a BIG WAVE and scored 10 runs.
Like the Safari’s used to play, “WIPE OUT.”
NY did all it’s scoring in the inning on doubles and singles and walks. Austin wells got a single and a 2-RBI double in the inning. The Yanks scored 2 more in the top of the 8th on a Cody Bellinger triple, Anthony Volpe double, and DJ LeMahieu single.
Meanwhile Max Fried was absolutely dominant, pitching into the 8th and leaving with a 13-1 lead.
Aaron Judge hit his 18th Homerun of the year in the 1st for an early 1-0 Yankee lead.
“Really good swing by Austin to start that inning,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards. “And then Peraza hits the double and it’s like, now they rolled. We’ve had a couple of games where the offense has been held down, so to have a breakout inning like that was really good to see; just a lot of really outstanding at bats that inning.”
“Austin, even when he goes through a little bit of a stretch, you always feel he has that big At Bat in him,” said Boone about Austin Wells breaking out of a recent slump with 2 hits. “He’s going to put in a quality At Bat in a big situation no matter who they bring in to face him.”
NY improves to 31-20, in 1st in the AL East by 5.5 games. Colorado drops to 9-43.
1. Judge Hits 18th HR of Year in 1st
Colorado started 6’4 lefty Kyle Freeland, now 32 years old who has spent his whole career with the Rockies. Freeland went 17-7 2.85 in his 2nd year in 2018, but has been an under-.500 pitcher since, especially this year as he came in at 0-6 5.68.
Freeland allowed a single by Paul Goldschmidt to lead off the game, but got lefty Trent Grisham to hit into a double play to erase the baserunner.
Next batterΒ Aaron Judge RIPPED a 405-foot homer to opposite field right-center, and it was 1-0 Yanks.

2. Yanks Score 10 in Big-Wave 5th
Freeland then rope-a-doped the Yankee lineup for a couple of innings.
- Jasson Dominguez led off the 2nd with a single, but again a double play — this one hit into by DJ LeMahieu — erased the runner.
- Paul Goldschmidt led off the 3rd with a single, but Freeland got 3 straight outs — including Aaron Judge who hit a Bomb to left center but caught by the wall. It was clear Judge was just WAITING to rip a pitch off the lefty Freeman, and he just missed it this time.
Freeland pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 4th and it looked like he was houdini-ing the start.
Until the 5th when he faced the Yankee lineup the 3rd time.

Halloran’s line: 4.2 innings, 9 hits, 8 runs (4 earned), 3 K’s, 3 walks. He loses to go 0-7 5.86.
3. Fried Fantastic
Meanwhile Max Fried was Fantastic. Again.
He was ahead in counts, and scattered 6 singles while pitching into the 8th on only 83 pitches. He eliminated 2 of those singles with his deadly pick off move — picking off a runner in the 1st and in the 3rd.

“He got a lot of early swings; so you felt he was strike 1 all day, or ball in play,” said Boone on Fried. “You saw him being able to add and subtract with the fastball. Mostly that four-seamer was really good for him today. Spun the ball pretty well, but I thought it was the fastball that he was pretty dialed in with.”

Fried was in command throughout — holding fort with the 1-1 tie into the 5th, and then cruising with the 11-1 lead, and then 13-1 lead to the 8th.
Fried struck out the 1st batter of the 8th, and was relieved by Ian Hamilton at a very efficient 83 pitches.
His line: 7.1 innings, 6 hits, 1 run, 7 K’s, 1 walk. He wins to go 7-0 1.29.
4. Yanks Add 2 in 8th for 13-1 Lead
The Yanks got 2 more runs in the top of the 8th off reliever Ryan Rolison.
Cody Bellinger led off the inning with a triple, and next batter Anthony Volpe doubled to left for a 12-1 Yankee lead.

Next batter Jasson Dominguez walked, and DJ LeMahieu singled him home. NY 13 Colorado 1.
5. Hamilton Wraps Up
More good news for the Yanks — Ian Hamilton, who has been hit a bit lately — pitched 1.2 shutout innings to wrap up.
Hamilton did allow 2 singles in between 2 outs after relieving Fried in the 8th, but pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 9th — strike out, ground out, ground out — for the old ballgame.
