A Run Short. Colorado 3 NY 2

HR #17 for Mr. Aaron Judge -- his first at Coors Field.

On a night when the Knicks were “a jump shot away” — losing their Game 2 of the Eastern Conference Finals to Indiana when Jalen Brunson’s game-tying 3 bounced out with 8 seconds left — New Yorkers turning off that game and turning on the Yankee game — by that time in its 9th inning — saw them fall “a run short” in Colorado.

With the tying run on 2nd in the 9th, Austin Wells hit what looked off the bat like it would be a bloop single to center — but it was easily caught by the 2nd baseman for the old ballgame.

The Yanks offered no respite.

For those Yankee fans who were glued into the Knick game — they missed:

  • An early 1-0 Yankee lead on an RBI triple by Paul Goldschmidt, driving in Aaron Judge who had singled,
  • A solo HR by Aaron Judge, his 17th of the year,
  • An ‘ok’ start by Clarke Schmidt, who escaped trouble throughout the first 3 innings, allowed a 2-out RBI single to tie the game in the 4th, and left in the 5th with 2 out and 2 on in a 2-2 tie — but was not helped by Tim Hill who allowed a 2-RBI double, and
  • Good pitching by Tanner Gordon, a 27-year-old 6’6 righty, and the Colorado bullpen, which shut the Yankees down.

“I thought Gordon’s cutter was good — gave our lefties some problems, so controlled us a little bit there,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards. “Thought we took some good at bats; they turned a good double play where Wells really smoked the ball. Wells gets that through we’re kind of in business, and who knows what happens — but we couldn’t put together that big inning.”

NY falls to 30-20, in 1st in the AL East by 5 games. Colorado drops to 9-42.

1. Gordon Does Good for His Dad

Tanner Gordon started for Colorado, a 27-year-old 6’6 righty who is not an elite prospect but has made the majors none the less. He was a 6th round pick by Atlanta in 2019, traded to Colorado last year, where he started his first MLB game.

After the game it was revealed that Gordon has a note on his locker from his dad that reads, “Good luck today. Love, Dad.” Gordon received the note and put it on his locker before that first MLB start last year. But he lost that day, and had gone 0-7 8.19 coming into this game against the Yanks.

He finally has a win — pitching 6 innings allowing 5 hits and 2 runs, with 5 K’s and 2 walks. He is now 1-1 4.38 on the year.

2. Yanks Take 1-0 Lead on Triple by Goldy

The Yanks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st off Gordon, when Aaron Judge laced a 1-out single to center, and Paul Goldschmidt ripped a 2-out triple to right center.

3. Colorado Turns Wells Hit into DP to Kill Rally in 4th

A Yankee rally was snuffed in the 4th by a spectacular double play, as Boone mentioned above. After Jasson Dominguez led off with a single and Anthony Volpe walked, Austin Wells ripped a ball that had RBI single written all over it, but 2nd baseman Adael Amador made a tremendous play, turning it into a double play.

4. Judge HR #17

Aaron Judge hit his first homer at Coors Field — and his 17th on the season — in the top of the 5th to give the Yanks a 2-1 lead.

5. Schmidt Gets In and Out of Trouble

Meanwhile Clarke Schmidt was ok — getting in and out of trouble all night.

He worked around a 1-out double and 2-out walk in the 1st, a 1-out double in the 2nd, and a leadoff single in the 3rd to have a shutout going into the 4th.

But a leadoff walk in the 4th — to 3rd baseman Ryan McMahon — finally got him via a 2-out RBI single by Kyle Farmer — tying the game 1-1.

Re-given the lead at 2-1 on the Judge HR, Schmidt got the first 2 outs of the 5th, but then allowed consecutive singles and was relieved at 97 pitches by Tim Hill.

6. Hill Does not Help Schmidt Out

And Tim Hill did not get it done — allowing a 2-RBI double to Ryan McMahon and it was 3-2 Colorado.

7. de Los Santos & Headrick Close for NY

The Yankee relievers held the fort after Hill gave up the 2-RBI double in the 5th. Hill rebounded to pitch a shutout 6th.

Yerry De los Santos pitched a shutout 7th.

And Brent Headrick — the 6’6 lefty who pitched the last 2 years with Minnesota — pitched a shutout 1-2-3 inning in the 8th.

8. Colorado Bullpen Shuts Yanks Down

But the Colorado bullpen of Jake Bird, Seth Halvorsen, and Zach Agnos shut the Yankees out too — each pitcher throwing 1 inning of no-hit shutout ball.

The Yanks did get a leadoff baserunner off Halvrosen in the 8th on a walk by Trent Grisham, but Aaron Judge hit into a double play.

In the 9th, Jasson Dominguez worked a 1-out walk, and moved to 2nd on a groundout by Anthony Volpe, and Austin Wells hit a ball that looked off the bat like it might be a game-tying bloop single to center — but it was caught easily by the 2nd baseman for the old ballgame.

A run short.
