Orioles Get “Pitching, Defense, & the 3-Run HR”. Baltimore 4 NY 3

Anthony Volpe rips RBI double to opposite field in the 8th.

Will Warren walked a couple of guys and made “the big mistake” — a 3-run homer in the 3rd inning — and Orioles’ starter Tomoyuki Sugano didn’t as the Yanks went down to defeat 4-3 in Baltimore on a beautiful, warm Monday night.

The ghost of Earl Weaver was smiling down as the Orioles got pitching, defense and a 3-run homer. Sugano threw his best outing of the year, Ryan O’Hearn hit the 3-run homer off Warren in the 3rd, putting Baltimore up 4-0 at the time, and Cedric Mullins reached over the centerfield fence to rob Paul Goldschmidt of a 2-run HR in the 5th.

The Yankee bullpen held court — including a 1-2-3 shutout inning by Devin Williams in the 8th inning — and the Yankee offense came back with a run in the 7th and 2 runs in the 8th (on back-to-back RBI doubles by Anthony Volpe and Austin Wells) but Oriole Ace Reliever Felix Bautista snuffed the Yanks 1-2-3 in the 9th.

“We pressured him; we had some chances, and just couldn’t break through,” said manager Aaron Boone about Sugano. “I don’t think he made the big mistake — where he’s got hurt with some slugs here in his first few starts; I didn’t really see that miss (today). He was in and around the edges and as he went his split was really good.”

“I thought Will had really good stuff tonight,” added Boone about Warren. “I thought his changeup was good; I thought his fastball had as good a life as we’ve seen. But a mistake there around some walks, that obviously ends up hurting.”

NY drops to 17-12; Baltimore improves to 11-17.

1. Warren Good, Sans Walks and “the Big Mistake”

Warren arguably pitched better than Sugano — but was gone by the 4th inning and took the loss.

In the 1st, Warren allowed a leadoff single to Cedric Mullins and a double to Gunnar Henderson putting runners on 2nd and 3rd with nobody out — but got out of it with a short fly to left by Adley Rutschman, and then a strike out of O’Hearn and Ryan Mountcastle swinging.

The Yankee defense helped, then deserted Warren in the 2nd. He got help from Chisholm at 2nd for the first out of the inning — a diving stop and throw for the out.

But with 2 outs he allowed a single to Jackson Holiday, and Ramon Laureano hit a line drive to center that Gold Glover Trent Grisham misplayed — the ball going over his head for an RBI double.

Warren got Earl Weavered in the top of the 3rd against the heart of the Oriole lineup — walking Gunnar Henderson and Adley Rutschman to start the inning, then allowing the 3-run homer to O’Hearn on a 2-2 sweeper.

Warren got tough and struck out the next 3 batters to retire the side.

Warren got the first out of the 4th before allowing a double to left by Laureano, and was relieved by Ryan Yarbrough.

2. Yarbrough Holds ‘Em

Yarbrough walked the first batter he faced, then retired 8 in a row — pitching a 1-2-3 inning in the 5th and 6th before allowing a single to start the 7th. He got a double play, single, groundout to end the 7th with NY down 4-1. So 3.2 shutout innings for Yarbrough.

3. Sugano Rope-a-Dopes Yanks

Meanwhile Tomoyuki Sugano was in trouble from the start but rope-a-doped his way through until his splitter started splitting and he got tougher.

The Yanks loaded the bases on him in the 1st inning with 2 outs (1-out single by Aaron Judge and walk to Cody Bellinger, and 2-out hit-by-pitch by Jazz Chisholm Jr.) but Sugano got Anthony Volpe to ground out to end the threat.

Sugano pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 2nd, but in the 3rd the Yanks got consecutive 1-out singles by Judge and Bellinger. Sugano reached back and struck out Paul Goldschmidt and Chisholm with his 88-MPH splitter.

Anthony Volpe led off the 4th with a line drive to centerfield that was caught by Cedric Mullins; he just missed. Jasson Dominguez singled with 2 outs but Sugano got Oswald Peraza to fly out to end the inning.

4. Mullins Robs Bellinger of Solo HR in 5th

And then in the 5th, Trent Grisham led off with a single, and Paul Goldschmidt launched a 2-out drive to centerfield that Cedric Mullins reached over the wall to catch — robbing Goldschmidt of a 2-run Homer.

5. Oswaldo Plates Run via Grisham & Judge in 7th

Keegan Akin relieved Sugano and pitched a shutout 6th, and got the first out of the 7th. Baltimore brought in Yennier Cano and the Yanks jumped him — Oswaldo Cabrera getting on with an infield single, and moving to 2nd on a throwing error by 3rd baseman Ramon Urias.

Oswaldo moved to 3rd on a Trent Grisham single to right, and scored on an Aaron Judge groundout. Baltimore 4 NY 1. The Yanks had hope.

6. Volpe & Wells RBI Doubles Make it 4-3 in 8th

The Yanks rallied in the 8th against Gregory Soto — Paul Goldschmidt leading off with a single to center, and Anthony Volpe ripping a 1-out, RBI double to opposite-field right for a 4-2 game.

Austin Wells followed with a double to center, scoring Volpe for a 4-3 game.

But with the tying run on 2nd, Soto struck out Jasson Dominguez and got Cabrera to ground out to 3rd.

7. Devin a Splendid Relief Outing

Out came Devin Williams for the 8th — his first appearance since being removed from the closer role. He struck out Ryan Mountcastle, then got a ground out and pop out for a 1-2-3 inning.

“Really good. I liked his look out there. Was aggressive. In the strike zone. Aggressive with his fast ball. I thought every change up he threw — I liked the depth on the pitch. But also establishing his fastball and in the strike zone with it.”

8. Bautista Shuts Door on Yanks in 9th

Felix Bautista came in with his 98-MPH sinker and 91-MPH splitter for the 9th. He Grisham to pop out — then struck out Judge and Bellinger for the old ballgame.
